  1. The only way to get it to go halfway up your street (why not all the way?) would be if you all share one single electricity meter meaning that you paid for half your streets electricity.
  2. We name them with their Asset Tag number followed by their location, that way if we ever need to bring one back for repair/replacement we know exactly where it came from etc. and it cant get mixed up.
  3. Yep! I've just purchased an i486DX2-50 laptop with 8MB of RAM and a massive 350MB hard disk! Just installed MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 for Workgroups
  4. This is not normal behaviour and is not how an internet connection should work. Just because it happens so often it has become the norm does not make it normal to have to do this! It's their filtering system they they created themselves that is the issue and to say just press reload is absurd. You dont have to do that with Virgin Media, Plusnet, SchoolsBroadband, RM Internet - you didnt even have to do that on Freeserve or AOL!!
  5. How can it be 'pretty good' when you also said this in the same thread: Personally I think it's pretty awful. When we were looking to change ISP pretty much everything on EduGeed said they were pretty good and we didnt realise pretty good meant people were putting up with problems, we thought it meant no problems. Our users are used to getting a message saying there is a problem with the backend that most dont report it to us any more, not getting on to a website 2 or 3 times a day has become the norm.
  6. I have a problem with my backend on a daily basis. The internet connection itself has never gone down as emails have always continued to work when their filtering system routinely fails.
  7. It's not instant. You can disable an account and it can take hours before it syncs with a device a Microsoft App has been installed on. We had to block a user from being able to send/recieve emails on their iPhone but it took up to 12hours for it to come in to affect as that seems to be just the way it works with Microsoft Apps on devices like iPhones etc.
  8. I agree! Everybody seems to love them and say they are great but they're not. Since switching over to them we are not able to use the Microsoft Store and they cant fix it - we have to tell Teachers to take their laptops home to use the Microsoft Store which is nuts! If you ring up to report problems and they dont like the sound of them they dont bother logging them (they deny this of course - but this is just burying your head in the sand)!
  9. I'm testing the OneDrive GPO where you can get users to be prompted to sync folders with OneDrive but it's not working. This is the Group Policy: Now I know it's doing something as in the registry on the computer I am testing it on the Tenant ID is showing up in the registry! I'm logged in to OneDrive and our school name is appearing alongside 'OneDrive' in File Explorer so I'm logged in OK but even after several reboots it's not prompting me to protect my important folders with OneDrive!
  10. I have the City and Guilds 2240 Electronics Servicing Parts 1, 2 and 3 qualifications where I was taught how to safely work on high voltages (up to 25KV) all the way down to a few mV. I was even taught how to fix a motherboard down to component level.
  11. I don't suppose you have any photos of your handy work as I'm intrigued by this method?
  12. Repairs should be undertaken by qualified/experienced persons and then a PAT test/inspection needs to be performed before being put back in to service. With regards to injury, your School should have liability insurance in case any member of staff or a student injures themselves at work. If you did the repair correctly you'll be OK, if you bodged a repair then you wont as you should only repair things you are competent at repairing. There are no laws as such that say you can or can't it's down to your Schools policies or line manager etc. What happens if a repair company puts in a wrong fuse? Only if you don't know what you're doing. My advise is to only repair something you are competent at repairing. We do the PAT tests/inspections in our Academy and we failed over 50% of all the Science departments kit! The Science Technician repaired the ones she felt competent in fixing and got an outside company in to repair the ones she wasn't and binned (WEEE) the rest that weren't worth repairing or were to complex to repair.
  13. Have you seen this stuff: https://sugru.com/ When you take it out of the packet it's like a weak version of blu-tack but after a few hours it sets solid and may help secure a faulty hinge to the laptop base - assuming there is room for the sugru that is. You can get it off Amazon.
  14. The hinges on laptops are not normally repairable as it tends to not actually be the hinges that 'go' but the bits of plastic they screw in to snap of the case so if your users can put up with the hinges and the laptops still run OK then Id say get some 2Power compatible batteries for them to keep them running longer. I'd also look at upgrading the OS upgrading to 8 (or preferably 10) may speed them up a bit.
  15. Internal HR. We had to explain several times how it works 'magically' overnight and they had to change their procedures to accommodate how it worked with Salamander as they weren't setting new users up until the day they started which means the Salamander overnight process hadnt run yet so they had to wait until the following day to get their automated user account. Salamander is relatively cheap for what it does and can do more than just set up a user account, we have 'Teachers of %PupilsName%' and all sorts of other email groups like that set up which would be impracticable to set up manually! If a student or staff member change subject then as long as that is reflected in SIMS, Salamander will remove them from one group and put them in another when the next overnight process runs.
  16. Most (if not all) helpdesk software has the option to enter how much time you took to do something. Take a look at Spiceworks - it's free
  17. HR organise the interviews, HR set up new users in SIMS so therefore HR tell us when a new user starts and what their requirements are! We have Salamader that automatically generates their account and the dozens of automated memberships of email distribution group they need to belong to. We even get start dates so we know when to get kit ready for them! Wasnt always like this and took a while to get people to understand that you cant just bring a new starter in and ask for a spare laptop as they start teaching in 30 minutes!!
  18. Is the laptop no useable at all? If it POSTS but just has no display you could try a USB to VGA and connect a monitor that way and then turn BitLocker off and then you can get the data.
  19. Do these replace previous ones such as Servicing Stack Update KB4465664 and Cumulative Update KB4467708 or do I need to do both lots?
  20. I pre-ordered Far Cry 5 with all the DLCs but have never played any of the DLCs as I got fed up with the airplanes coming and shooting at me all the time, made it tiresome and monotonous for me which was a shame as Far Cry 4 was the reason I purchased my XBox in the first place and thoroughly enjoyed that one!
  21. Sorry for the double-post but ignore this as I have run the installation and it has the Desktop Experience option:
  22. I have been reading about Edugeek users installing Server 2019 so thought I'd take a look in a test environment but the only download option on the Microsoft VLSC is for the core version and not the the Desktop Experience one.
  23. https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/12/05/far-cry-game-awards-2018-teaser Could this be the Fallout we have been waiting for in the guise of Far Cry???
  24. That's not right as that's a hardware failure. We had one like that and got it sorted.
  25. There's a free IWB software solution called openboard you might want to look at or got with Teams which Microsoft have been pushing for Schools for a couple of years now - it's basically a collaborative version of Onenote and is free.
