If the brightness of the screen is his issue and he's already using an LCD then between the Brightness and Contrast settings you should be able to make the screen so dark it almost appears it's turned off; how dark does he need it to go?.........

It's on pretty much every machine here, and it's the only media playing software I use at home too!

I'd grab a large pot of tea/coffee/beverage of choice, some biccies, my iPod and spend a few hours moving them 1 by 1. Easy job, you could even relax a little while doing it on "auto-pilot"

Awesome! After a few tries I can now get it to stay in 'colour' until it turns back into the negative!

Have you tried using another OS such as miniXP or a Linux distro live from a CD, and see if you can even see the hard drive to rule out a hardware problem?

I have just had to remove all the PC's from my ICT Suite as it is being torn down and re-built as a corridor into a new block that is about to start being built. No new ICT Suite is in place or planned to be; instead we are having a trolley with 30 laptops in the new "Research Center" (aka a big-ass library with desks and chairs for 30 kids, and which is easily big enough to fit 2 classes of kids, probably more) and also each year group is getting 1 trolley with 8 laptops, a few digital cameras, microphones etc (to borrow a phrase from our ICT Co-Ord, a "mobile media suite") with the idea that, with planning, 2 year groups can 'pool' their laptops to give 1 class 1 laptop between 2 pupils, or 4 year groups can pool to give 1 class 1 laptop per pupil. Quite how well that is going to work is up to the planning of the teachers I suppose. Personally I don't think it will work, there's going to be those who want to use them all the time and those who don't ever want to use them, and the trolley's will end up sitting in certain classrooms continuously as other staff can't be bothered to move them around etc. But as long as they work, that's my obligation to them fulfilled so I'm not worrying about the use of them, that's up to the teachers. EDIT: Oh and I wholly believe that I will have at least 2 broken within the first week of them being in use, within a month 5 will have died and by Christmas I'll have one trolley with no laptops in it at all 'cos they'll all be on my desk awaiting repairs.....

Just different ways of doing the same thing I guess. Personally I like having my \\server\Staff\%username% and \\server\Pupils\%username% for document redirection and \\server\Profiles\%username% for profiles. That way, I know that anything I do with the contents of the profiles folders (deleting, renaming, restoring, previous versions etc) has no chance of having an effect on the documents folders and contents, and vice-versa. If it was all held together, I can envisage that if a profile corrupted and needed deleting, at some point one would forget that their documents are all inside the same folder and erase the lot....

Not sure what you mean by their "Home folder"? Are you saying 1 folder that has their roaming profile data and their documents inside it?

It'll be quicker because when a person logs on to a machine it's not having to download their massive My Documents/Pictures/Music etc folders to the machine as part of the logon. EDIT: Localzuk beat me to it! lol

Roaming profiles + redirection here, anything redirected can still be made available offline as normal, had no problems with doing so. The way I have it set here is that in AD for each user a mapped drive (U:\) is pointed to \\FileServer\Staff\%username% where anyone who is a member of the "Staff" group in AD can access the \\server\Staff folder and then only the individual %username% and myself as Administrator can access the individual folders. My Documents folders are then just pointed at U:\ within the profiles. No issues with anything being available offline, been running smoothly for nearly 4 years this way now

WTB = "Want to buy" as far as I know, but not sure that makes entire sense in the context of the OP's post..... hmmmmmmmm? I get to finish 30 minutes earlier than normal each Friday (3.45pm instead of my usual 4.15pm), but that's only to sort out the .5 of my 37.5 hours per week, so actually I'm losing out on half an hours' pay each Friday by being forced to go home earlier......

Big heavy work boots with steel toecaps and thick rubber soles. I hate small, lightweight shoes, I always seem to wear through them quickly and break the laces all the time, plus I like my shoes to come a bit farther up the ankle than most 'smart shoes' do. Plus the toecaps come in hand when moving heavy equipment, I'm sure they've saved me a broken toe a few times over the last couple of years!

Yeah that was the thought I had as well about cloning them (I've not done it, not even got iPads here yet!) but can't see any other real way to do it, otherwise you are going to need 6 PC's to managed 30 iPads which is crazy! Will have to investigate further. I know there are companies selling docks which allow you to connect 15 iPads at once to 1 PC using this method so the PC only thinks it has the 1 connected, but as you say I'm not sure how that works with the Apps.

Not sure on the details but basically set up 1 iPad the way you want it to be, then back it's config up to your PC, then 'restore' that config to any amount of other iPads you have and voila! A set of imaged iPads

I have just ordered (read: been forced to order!) a set of 30 iPad2's for this place, the idea being that we will give 1 to each teacher and let them have a month's 'play' with them, and see what they can come up with, at the end of the month we will have a quick meeting where everyone can discuss what they found worked/didn't work and trade ideas about how to best use the devices in the classroom. The 30 will then be re-formed into one class set that can be booked out by classes when they want to use them. It will be interesting to see what happens!
