  1. I had a trial of Impero, Ab Tutor and Lanschool. We like all of them. Ab Tutor seemed to be cheapest, but Lanschool offered to much price for what we need and have nice adm templates. Impero is really good, and do lots more than just control classroom computers, but there is price tag for all those features and simply makes it not affordable for us. hence we have Lanschool, teachers are really happy with it.
  2. For numerous errors I gave up with HAP, I looked at adito and it is quite good. It is OpenVPN adn use webpage to access shared folders etc. Simple to setup and use: Here some installation info: Installer « Lars Werner
  3. Remote desktop needs another set of CAL licensing, if I'm right. Not on EES so don't have free access to that. Edutech4Schools: Thanks mate, just did it. Well me it is done, adito does exactly what we want to do, so for me problems is solved. Just need to create proper server for it and make it accessible from internet
  4. Looking at adito now, added network shares, but not sure how to add users home directory, as it does not allow %username% and I don't want to spend hours creating resources for each users. Tried HomeAccess Plus, but can't make it working on W2k8, only on 7 and after updated version it stopped working and just took to much time to fix it. Like everyone here looking for cheap (preferably free) option and easy to use and setup.
  5. Yeah moving vCenter is a pain, I need to do it as well. Need to move databases and than attach them etc and hope it will work. Will leave it probably to some longer break, when I have spare time on my hands
  6. I think same, they should be able to control class, how they behave. But I can't say to deputy the he should be in control and I will refuse to remove software. I have removed groove.exe from program files through GPP, see if that works
  7. Hi All Students discovered that they can use SharePoint Workspace from Office 2010, to instant messaging between themselves, teachers complaining as it disrupt lesson. Best option would to be remove it, but as this is an part of Office installation, it's not that simple. Can you advice best way to block use of this? Thanks
  8. I have moved all from CC3 to Vanilla Windows environment. My best advice would be don't do it on same domain, start with new one and create trust, migrate dns and dhcp to new domain - domain setup + dns + dhcp +exchange can be done under a week- imaging computers depends on numbers. We have WDS and it works really well. With windows 2008 I think it is easier. I think most you could miss is a RMMC, now I use excel spreadsheet from wisesoft to create bulk users. For printer management, we use build in features in windows 2008 and scripts - like many others around here. Software deployment through gpo and msi packages, to build mis packages I use appdeploy and it works really well. Network works much faster now and I feel more in control and it saves me around 5k a year (support contract), only thing we got left from RM is smartcache. But I would not do the move other time than summer hols - testing and re imaging all computers takes lots of time and than tweaking to your needs. New volume licensing agreement for schools can make lots of saving in comparison to previous model.
  9. I've stopped going more than year ago as RM seminars stopped being that useful, on last one when people ask a question on the subject, the guy who was doing presentation did not know most of the answer, but some one form audience did - and guy who was doing the presentation supposed to be technical. Those seminars used to be much better 2-3 years ago, now you will have 9 presentation and maybe 1 or 2 is worth the time. So in the end we decided no to go to anymore. But maybe they improved, I hope you get there what you expect.
  10. Any chance you can write more details about that settings for Default printer for OU? We use script here, but it is a bit temperamental Thanks
  11. I have not tried on windows 7, but will do. My main problem was connection do access db through IIS, I think this is caused by 64bit OS and MS Jet driver. Will try windows 7 and see it will go. Thanks for reply
  12. Hello I'm trying to set this up on windows 2008r2, problems running it unfortunately, anyone has tried that and been successful? Looks like brilliant app
  13. Or just create new OU for those kids and block inheritance for GPOs, create new GPOs just for those users
  14. HI all, So we ditched RM CC3, domain works fine, but our file server that hosts all home folders spikes up in CPU usage. Mainly because of SearchIndexing. If I switch of this service users will get information on documents folder that some library features are not supported and default save location is not supported either. Just wonder how you guys have this setup? I already excluded all shared folders from indexing, just left home folders Do you keep kids home folder on different server than staff home folders? If the server is very busy it take awful lots of time to save anything. Or maybe after sometime windows will index everything and it will be quicker? Our environment: servers win 2008 r2 , desktops on Windows 7
  15. Thanks Steve for reply Bit of a problem Got alocated quota with auto-quota on users parent folder but for user it still shows whole drive size, not actual quota. I heard it was a problem in 2003/XP but was sorted in 2008/7. Can this be fixed?
  16. Sorry to refresh bit old topic. What if you need to increase quota for specific users? Lets say you have 2 pupils who are doing some media video processing? Do you need to create another quota just for each user?
  17. to add administrator to the profile: Computer Config>Admin Templates>System/User Profiles>Add the administrators users group to roaming user profiles. Adding automatic Outlook config I think can be done on exchange server and to add shortcuts you can use gpp
  18. OK, fixed it , stupid me forgot to untick box move the contents to the new location, fine now but.. I still get some shortcuts from local default profile, which are not listed in my customized. Another thing, I deleted profile on local machine (all users have roaming profile) and now user will have temporary profile when logs on to this machine - why roaming profile does not work?
  19. Hi Guys Maybe some one had it, I want to redirect every student to custom made start menu folder. I have created share \\server\StartMenu in here I have folder Programs with all folders for specific programs and shortcuts and setup redirection in GPO (folder redirection \start menu with Basic redirection I added NTFS permissions for domain admins full control and authenticated users to read/execute and list. When user logs on it should get all the shortcust from here. But redirections fails, I got error message "Cannot create folder \\server\StartMenu\Programs" Access is denied No clue why it is not working, why does it want to create folder if GPO redirection is set to redirect to the following location. Help appreciated
  20. yeah, you can do this through GPO, user redirections - redirect what you want to specified folder and than just apply that policy to OU with users. Every time new users login for first time, those folders will be created for them. Just need to remember that you need to have proper permision on main folder where you redirect.
  21. you can use dhcp and dns just on domain and then create zone for other domain and trust - done it for my test domain and worked fine.
  22. I would start making one brand switches for whole network. Remove small switches, hubs etc and replace them with something decent. I had here 3coms and planet switches, and few netgear - all entry level not managed. I replace gradually all of them with HP procurve range - not mega expensive, good quality, lifetime warranty. Network feels mu better, nothing locks up or crush and you can use free management console for all switches. But there are many more solutions, but defo I would stick with one brand.
  23. Oh yeah got that, thanks. I was trying to get this kind of message with installing office 2010 using script, but I don't think it will work same way as msi package installation and display message before logon
  24. Hi Guys I have test domain win2k8 R2 and can't find one setting I remember from Win2k3 and windows xp. When you install any app using GPO in win2k3, on windows xp you will get please wait window with installing software application, before you can log on. How do I get similar message on Windows 7? Tried to google it, but no luck, maybe I phrase search wrongly, don't know. Went through all the GPOs names, but could not match anything. Can you point in right direction? Thanks
  25. The biggest disadvantage of RM is cost. it is not bad tool, but for what it is, I don't think it worth the quotes they provide (I have RM CC3). Plan for this summer: remove RM servers, start with fresh domain under win 2008R2. Huge job, but I'm sure it will be worth it. There are more people in IT Windows network literate than RM network, so Vanilla is much bigger standard.
