Even if a site enforces HTTPS it shouldn't matter because you have disabled SSL inspection so nothing should be looking at the traffic. No filter that I know of downgrades HTTPS to HTTP; they decrypt, inspect and then repackage. Either your browser/OS is being over zealous and picking up you are using a proxy and warning your users that their traffic is being monitored or your system is inspecting traffic even after you disabled it.

My experience is if you are not inspecting HTTPS you get no "Connection not private" message as the certificate is untouched. You only need to install a certificate if you want to decrypt, read and then repackage the stream. This causes the "Connection not private" as something is reading the data and the browser or OS can see the certificate is different from the site. You install the certificate to say you trust things signed by this certificate so don't worry. If a system is saying "Connection not private" but you are not inspecting then my suspicion would be they are decrypting the data for their own ends. We use Smoothwall and I will do some testing but have never seen a privacy issue unless we were decrypting and inspecting without installing the certificate. Which system is this?

Is the policy applied? I found that rebuilding tablets using sfw#setup created a new name. The tutorial I followed had a dynamic group setup that the devices were added to, though I can't remember if this was part of the QR-code setup or something else.

It may have been mentioned (and maybe teaching granny to create a vacuum seal around an ovum) but don't forget that a 19" widescreen monitor will be squatter than a 19" square monitor so may actually appear smaller.

Or create an IT policy for minimum requirements and put 22" screens in. You then have a policy to refer to. On a different tack I'm not sure why a Governor is challenging this, unless it is some general spending query. My understanding is that Governors should not be involved in operational decisions, they are strategic. So if the Governor considered the IT budget was too high then the Bursar/BM/Head may challenge you on your costs, of which buying certain screens may come up.

Another vote for Prowise. It has a Whiteboard app built in, and you can add Android Apps if you need. You used to be able to buy white board side panels as well, though never bought them myself and wouldn't guarantee they still are produced. I would also predict that they cost the earth.

We got 10 10.5 versions for our Early Years to use with Tapestry. They are happy as they have shiny, call them their iPads, have good cameras and are responsive. We are happy because they aren't iPads, haven't wrecked our budget and we can manage them from InTune. Everyone is happy, so I am happy.

But as I mentioned that option covers a multitude of sins, from not bothered up to the point just shy of having a plan. Plenty could have looked at it, have it as part of their purchasing standard but just don't have a plan to transition.

Came to say the same. Unless there are really good reasons, which there are a few, try and steer the school towards fewer shared big machines. MFDs or proper shared printers. It will cut your costs, the amount of inventory you have to keep and your time. My experience is there will always be complaints but at least you can point to the savings and efficiencies.

No, they wouldn't have a clue what I was talking about. It is part of my job so I have just been plugging away as and when. Anything new that we source or tender for, the question is asked. Much like @localzuk, it really comes down to a cost benefit. For the amount of work we would have to put in, the snagging we would have to carry out after and the grief it may cause compared to the upside it really isn't a priority at the moment. But when it does it should be a relatively easy job of a bit of planning, adding in some IPv6 DHCP entries, a few edits to make static IPs to go DHCP and we should be golden... He said confidently!

I've voted "not even thought about" though I've done preliminary planning, checking what can and can't work. Just not got so far as making a plan to actually roll it out. BT say we can have IPv6 addresses when ready (it was part of our tender for a new line), biggest issue is Smoothwall doesn't support it yet. Internally I'm confident everything important is compliant, I don't doubt that there will be a few silly devices that won't work. Biggest factor is me! I have a faint fear of not being able to reel off IP ranges and addresses. I need to study it more because I'm sure once I understand it more fully it will all be fine, but there is a slight irrational fear that the whole system is just handing over the controls and then you don't have to understand it, which worries me for when it goes wrong!

You can't really stick with 2008R2 as support is ending for them in 2020. You will have no support and no security updates. I would recommend upgrading to 2019 so that you have maximum time before you need to upgrade again and then get a upgrade paln in place so you can stay ahead of the curve. As for licensing I would speak to a licensing company as it gets so complicated sometimes that generally everyone has an idea how it should work but that isn't necessarily how it does. Depending on how many VMs you have and you create sometimes a Datacenter license for the host can work out cheaper and gives you more flexibility. If you are in the UK, Pugh are fairly well respected. We use a local MSP who does us well and keeps us up to date of changes.

The best system I can think would be to sit them down and say "Remember to your duties or get fired. Off you go now." Or offer to forget to pay them? Or a cattle prod. This is a people issue, not a tech issue. If a person has troubles remembering then they need to find a way that works for them to remember. You put calendar reminders in for them and they will forget to look at them or accidentally turn them off and then it will be your fault and issue to sort.

I've used Smoothwall for longer than I care to remember and although not perfect I do think that it is best suited for a school out of the majority of the systems I've seen. Though it may be better suited with to schools with a dedicated, technical team. The biggest difference in my experience is the dynamic content filtering, rather than just being a URL filter. In the corporate world it is much easier to say I don't want access to these sites or these types of content and 95% be covered. In education though we have to be a bit more proactive/flexible, thinking of KCSIE, so if a topic comes up within a page, it has to be evaluated as well. I'm not saying none of the other systems are suitable for a school. So Sophos, which I've looked at, looks fantastic and if you have a Sophos ecosystem will tie in brilliantly. You can show people graphs of users, number of blocks and the like, analyse what is being looked at and my feeling is it is a much more hands off set up and ignore system (I may be incorrect). But my opinion is that Smoothwall does the core of what we want, filtering nasties, better because of the dynamic content filtering. Now lets not forget the elephant in the room, generally reports are rubbish, but the safeguarding email is brilliant and our DSL is extremely happy with it and I know when people have come to take a look at our safeguarding they are impressed with it and that we have that capability. And this is why I say having a dedicated (not dedicated to Smoothwall alone), technical team suits Smoothwall better because they will be able to craft the reports and produce them, whereas I would hate my DSL to even have to look at the reporting section, let alone create one. Also being geared towards Education means they understand and react quickly to issues schools are facing. So I have often found their standard block lists already contain sites people are talking about manually blocking. My experience is that filtering systems geared to more corporate settings just don't apply the resources to keeping the lists up-to-date The new cloud reporting changes do look fantastic, as long as they are implemented properly, and I think Smoothwall are getting back on an even keel after having some major wobbles. This time last year I would probably have been writing something else. So the TL;DR is list your requirements and pick a few of the big contenders and see if they meet those requirements and match the ones you/the school feel are top priority.

Are you signed up to O365 or Google Docs? In O365 you could create a team that would share a OneNote to everyone and they can scribble or type on that, PDFs can be dropped in and you can either have everyone scribbling on the same or give them their own individual ones. I Imagine Google must have something similar. The biggest issue would be creating Governor accounts for them.

How do you mean? Showing what sessions are running at what times or current session/next session? If those then you could use a digital signage system to show certain slides at certain times. If you want anything more advanced you're going to have to code up a database and dynamic web page to read out the info you want. You might be able to use XIBO datasets but it has been awhile since I looked at those.

I wouldn't like to guarantee but I'm sure I saw somewhere that it would be on GamePass. If so I will be a very happy guy!

We went for it in the end and have write back. I will be severely disappointed if they have turned it off as we have embedded Inventory in our registration processes.

As a side note, you can use O365 on a Chromebook. All the Office apps are available and the web bits work fine, as it is Chrome. We do, and not found any killers yet.
