  1. However I fear the Bursar's face would look more like
  2. After trying it out it's usefull, but not in this isntance as people will still complain. On the up side I edge closer to just telling to stop being silly. Any other comments on how people create their school calendars?
  3. It's not even that he's comparing calendars, it's just seeing one single calendar that contains too mcuh infor for outlook to display on one screen!
  4. Hmm.. You know I hadn't though of that. The concern is that the creation of the Calendaer is vague until confirmed by the Dept Head. That means he may take things out. Having said that we are trying to encourage the use of SIMS amongst the staff and this might be another way. Is there a way to export the information though? Or report on it? I think I'll put some thought into that though if anyone's got any other ideas or comments I'll gladly listen.
  5. So the premise is this, we have a school calendar that it produced that has all the important dates in, match fixtures, UCAS dealines, trips, talks etc etc. I've got it set up nicely in a shared folder on our mail server, some people use Outlook some use the web interface for our mail server and people can add it what they want. Sounds OK? Apparently not. What people want, unfortunately including out deputy head, is to be able to see an "overview" of a month so that they can "see what else is going on and how their activity impacts on everything". Also just switching it to month view is not good enough because if there are a lot of events it doesn't show everything. you also have to scroll up and down if you use week view! Now my initial reaction is "How on earth do you expect your comptuer to display such a vast quantity of information on screen? is there something stopping you flicking through each day around the point you want your talk and picking somewhere?" However I was wondering what processes/software people use to create their calandars, is the request to see so much info unrealistic?
  6. You missed "Taxes" off the list
  7. Mine is free. But that was because I've just bought my laptop and it qualifies for a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista
  8. +1 for spiceworks! Tunred off the auto network discovery rubbish but appart from that, lovely. AD integration and E-mail support and the new HTML e-mail are great. Only downside is that I can't seem to get it to mix AD and maunual users, thus the users on my second domain can't log into the user portal (thouhg they can E-mail it)
  9. Thanks but unfortunately they are not. We're not a massive site and it gives my technicain something do and he's new so it also gives him chance to learn where all the computers are hidden. Might have a look at it though just to see what it does. Oh and it means that we're more likely to get told about the "earth shatteringly critical problem that needs to be fixed before next lesson (in 5 minutes) that's been broken for the last week that's just being mentioned"™
  10. I dont bother assigning my servers to WSUS. If I want updates on them I'll put them on, when I want. With regard to workstations I have them configured to download and install as a certain time. Don't restart, wait for the next scheduled re-start. This is fine however some things seem to totally ignore this and re-start the machine anyway. I'm just in the process of getting round my machines enabling WOL. Now I've got some free software that I can get to work I'll soon be waking all my machines up at 6, letting the updates apply and everything's fine and dandy for the working day.
  11. We have a problem with Exams organiser not accepting the new basedata. Apparently Capita have told us that our server may not have upgraded properly even though, according to all the splash screens it has and produced no errors when running the update. I've got to manually run everything again apparently... I'm not convinced but I'll do it and see what happens.
  12. Why is excel being a pain? I want to link some cells to another spreadsheet. When create the link for the first cell it puts in the cell =[ReportNamesRaw.xlsx]Sheet1!$A$2 and displays the value from the other workbook. When I remove the $ signs so that I can fill the formula into the other 1200 cells it changes it to text. WHY WHY WHY. Signed: Frustrated of Rotherham.
  13. Hi there, I'm running WSUS and I would like to be able to export some information but can't see how to do it. I'd like to export the list that appears on main screen, i.e the columns with computer name (IP,OS,Installed percentage) and last status report. It's really the name and time of last report I am after but I can't seem to be able to get a list where I can export that info. I can get a tabular list that doesn't have the time on or I can can print the summary that has the time but each computer is on a seperate page, Which is a pain. Anyone got any ideas?
  14. Found it. In My Documents, not on the c: Drive as per Capita's instructional document.
  15. Hi there, I'm wanting to create my own Custom Excel Teplmplate. Everytime I try and create one SIMS doens't put any data it in! I think this is something to with my teplate being blank I need the SIMS one with the Macro's that tell's sims where to put the data. According to the SIMS advanced reporting guide I have this should be in C:\Program Files\Sims\Sims .net\TempSimsRpt. However I can't seem to find it. I don't even have that folder on my computer. Any suggestions on where I can find it? - Just checked another Computer. I Can find the rtf and Word Templates. Need the Excel one.
  16. Run the script on the computer usinf loopback processing in Merg mode. That would allow you to apply a script to a Computer Account but using the User section of the policy. To set it up what you need to do is: 1. Create a Group Policy with the Loopback Policy enabled: Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> System --> Group Policy User Group Policy loopback processing mode: Enabled & Merge 2. Create a Group Policy attached to the OU containing the computer account with the script in the: User Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Scripts Logon --> printers.vbs. The Replace operation stops all other User based policies applying there and only uses those that would apply to the Computer OU. The Merge operation uses the normal User based policies as well, but any policies set on the Computer OU take precedence.
  17. What they "Should" do and what one or two who complain a lot "want" to do are often two different things...
  18. Yes they can all print timetables... Unfortunatly via the student's record thus only one at a time. Reports ==> "Print timetables" gives them access to print in baulk and only seems to be available to Timetabler/Cirriculum Manager. @Rawdon I creted a custom group and gave it the Curriculum --> Timetable Printing --> View & Edit. I then assigned added a user to the group. Before they were a School Administrator and couldn't see the print timetables feature. Afterwards they could. So it should work.... How did you change the permissions?
  19. Cheers folks. I've logged a CR for my permissions issue and antoher one I have found. Have a look at http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/40963-if-your-board-vote-my-sims-change-requests.html#post379402 if your bored. Would it be an insult if I logged "Provide adaquete and usefull instructions on using SIMS permissions, including a full list of what all those security keys do and how to enable each menu item" as a change request?
  20. If you've got a free minute and a SIMS SupportNet login I'd be greatful if you can vote for my CR's 0909-577546 just seems to me to be rubbish coding but according to Capita Support it should be logged as a Chage Request. 0909-577572 I'd quite like deny permissions in system manager. Ofcouse I have to log this with no idea how the new version will work but there you go. Thanks.
  21. Did they tell you this on the 1st April? There is something I'd like to see in the new system, do you know if there is somewhere to raise issues or just log it as a normal Change Request?
  22. Thanks. I had originally tried adding this permission in however I foolishly assumed that I would just need the "view" permission. It does seem that you need both. How stupid of me for not fully understaning Capita's security permissions.
  23. You'd think, but no.
  24. I put this in the computers start-up script to copy a font onto all the computers copy "\\srvbur\swinst$\font\.ttf" "c:\windows\fonts" /y reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts" /v " /t REG_SZ /d ".ttf" /f
  25. I want to create a small custom security froup that allows access to the "Reports | Print Timetables" feature without making them a "timetabler", i.e. giving them acces to nova or the ability to moose up anything timetable related. Whilst I am fine with the setting up of the security group itself what I don't know is which security key(s) to enable to allow access to that menu item. Any ideas?
