  1. Are you able to supply further detail? Maybe a network diagram and an idea of the volume of users etc aswell as how you plan to interconnect the switches e.g fibre or copper?

  4. Aye as mentioned if the switch is 802.3af then you will be fine, no need to disable PoE on the port. That said I would tend to do it anyway but then I am overly cautious!

  6. It's also worth running a scan to check there are no networks in surrounding buildings with access points that mat be effecting your network. There are loads of free tools available for this task. If for example you find a network next door on channel 1 then put your 2 aps on 6 and 11. Also what channel width do you have them set to? I would avoid using 40mhz due to overlap
  7. Or failing that do you have an option in the wireless driver software of your client device to turn up roaming sensitivity?
  8. Have your tried reducing your AP power? By default it should be auto but if you go to Configure -> Access Points in your zoneDirector you can adjust the TX power to MIN and see if this helps. Im thinking maybe your APs are overlapping too much?

  10. For the price, the UniFi system is excellent but as always you get what you pay for. The server software does not have a lot of the benefits you will find with a hardware controller and is instead more of a management tool. For example you wont get intelligent load balancing, client handover or dynamic power adjustments. If you are on a budget though they certainly have their place

  16. Just thought I'd share this incase anyone else has the same problem as me. Basically when connecting to a windows share from my mac whenever I copied a file over to the windows machine it would seem to copy but then vanish The fix to this was to connect as follows: cifs://192.168.1.2:139‏ (where 192.168.1.2 was the windows server IP) popping the port on the end for some reason cured it
  17. The antenna design assumes these will be ceiling mounted so you are quite right and wall mounting will never be as efficient. As mentioned by the last poster the wireless radiates in a donut shape meaning less coverage in the middle. When mounted on a ceiling this area of less coverage is aimed straight down, if you mount the ap on a wall then this area is aimed straight into the room with your nice donut bits aiming at the floor and ceiling.
  18. Well sort of. If you are plugging in a pc or printer or CCTV camera etc then the 100mbps ports should suffice as let's face it, 100mbps is still plenty for one machine in most cases. However if you plug another access point into the 100mbps port then you would be bottlenecking it as it could in theory use up to 300mbps if given a gig port. This would however be a better option than meshing in some situations assuming your data transfer is fairly even each way and you are happy with a 100/50 split of throughput as meshing by nature means you can only max out as 150mbps agregate throughput to your 2.4ghz clients as the 5ghz then becomes backhaul. I would imagine ruckus only put 100mbps ports in for the 2nd and 3rd ports as they didn't want any wired traffic to be detrimental to the wireless. Hope that made sense as I'm still half asleep lol. Let me know if you want me to explain myself better :-)
  19. the exception is if you are using 40MHz wide channels in which case you cant avoid if you have more than 1 AP generally this is bad practice though but I've seen it done many times!

The issue would come that if you daisy chain a Ruckus AP off of a 100Mbps port you will be bottlenecking your potential 300Mbps of throughput to 200Mbps total and only 100Mbps in one direction 300Mbps of throughput being based on the dual radio units using both radios (150Mbps in 2.4GHz and 150Mbps in 5GHz)

  22. any access point in bridge mode will do the trick Or with some vendors its called "station mode" or similar. Just watch out for WDS and any proprietary technology as you may need to disable these to make it work

Typically you would give them all the same SSID to make moving around with client devices simpler, bare in mind however that controller-less (also know as autonomous) Access Points as a rule will not support any kind of roaming capability (This also goes for the UniFi access points as the UniFi server software is not really a controller but more a way of configuring the APs and monitoring them while the software is running). Your client device will of course decide at some threshold to jump ship to a closer access point but this is far from seamless and can lead to problems such as sticky client. This is not so much of a problem when the client devices are likely to be stationary as you would only want them to migrate to another AP if the workload on the original AP was getting high and there were other APs within range that were under a low workload (again this is not supported if there is no controller present). looking at the cost of the Netgear APs, if they are within budget you wouldn't need much more of a budget to go for a hardware controller based solution. That said I would sat the easiest option is to configure your first AP and then save the config. You can then just upload the config to each of the next 5 in turn and just change the IP if using static IPs Hope this helps
  24. Just an extra bit of info for you - the 2 additional ports are fast ethernet only (which usually isn't an issue but worth knowing)
