It's likely the drive is totally dodo - as others have said a recovery company will be your only option now if you do really need that data. Talking about hard disks clicking anyone used to run the old WD Raptor 15k drives? Used to take them an hour to spin up to a seemingly never ending concorde engine RPM and the head movement sounded like a tin box full of marbles being thrown down a flight of steps. Aah them were the days.

Yes you are totally correct and I am not arguing there at all! I suppose am trying to get at is the law is inadequate and needs improving as the data controller HAS to put a certain level of trust in the data processors, and this level of trust is certainly being abused and not taken seriously and the various acts and laws etc don't seem to really guard against a processor that does not take it's responsibility seriously and single handedly hemorrhages a thousands schools data? There's no responsibility no accountability their side, the school gets 100% dumped with the blame, bad press, possibly fine - even though the school could not actually have done anything at all to stop that potential data leak other than to not use any data processors at all, which in this day and age is clearly an imposibility? Even my cat is disappointed with these data processors

Out of interest why condemned? Electrically condemned or physically condemned? It sounds far fetched to condemn even the actual physical bars bolted to the ceiling as all a new company is gonna do is charge a fortune to fix exactly the same thing back up??!

Same issue here. The lighting wiring etc is 30+ years old. Total replacement is gonna cost a lot. We've rented a system for this years show.

This is a bet peeve of mine Grumbledooky.. It's almost like the data processors believe they are totally exempt from any of the responsibility within the data protection act etc and that it's all up to the data controller to deal with. Ironically it is the opposite - they are the trusted method of processing our data so they inherit the same responsibility to protecting our data! In fact they should legally have more responsibility as they're not just protecting one schools data but hundreds or even thousands of schools worth of data, millions of parents and pupils.

Thanks Phil that's great - please let is know what google say as I have scoured my google newsletters etc and cant find any mention of this sudden disablement of older devices. You can't even unenroll or wipe or install chrome flex or anything so these devices have gone from useful (if old) straight to ewaste in literally one morning. Cheers

If you allowed 20% of the project cost in repairs then I can see why you did not struggle. I am trying to keep it to 10% here. :/ The problem is nowadays your paying more for the chromebooks and more for the parts. 150 for a Lenovo screen for a 300e touch (100% of it's value) or 30 for a "budget" screen for a 100e (15% of it's value) That's why I am only buying 100e now as a screen break doesn't write the Chromebook off. I know of a school that went all touch screen and now has 75% of the fleet damaged. Is it better to have people go yay touch screen for a year and then have no working chromebooks in year 3? I think it's better to say sorry no touch screens and then have 99% of your fleet running after 3 years. Sustainability is the hidden cost of 1:1 for a lot of schools who don't realise like you did that you gotta pay 120% of the project costs over the lifetime.

I would strongly advise non touch if you wish to keep them going for 5 years, as touch Chromebooks generally can be unrepairable due to lack of replacement touch screens. Also I would avoid Acer as 60% of our acer fleet is now in the skip which is much higher than any other brand I've had.

Usually on the upload screen on each candidate somewhere around there it list exactly what format they want it in and what file size limit there is. E.g. must be MP4 format for videos and say 100MB per file Or must be PDF for documents? Out of interest how come you guys and gals in engerland are doing WJEC stuff?

Get them a Chromebook instead - cheaper, easier to use, much less to go wrong, less tech support requirement, automatic upgrades for 5+ years, fit and forget.

If you want next gen you want arbor or bromcom. SIMS is incapable of being next gen as it's based on 20 year old tech.

That's exactly correct. They successfully buried their heads in the sand and pretended nothing happened. Which adds them onto my list of completely untrustworthy companies not to deal with - along with other famous ones like capita and ESS
