School Closure / School merger - what happens to SIMS data?
drutt replied to PotNoodleTech's topic in MIS Systems
I would ask the LEA or whatever authority is managing the process and if they can't give a clear answer; back-up what I can to some external drives with appropriate encryption then pass it on to the Headteacher with them signing a handover document and wash your hands of it. It won't be your responsibility to worry about anymore so why stress over it, just focus on the job hunt and move on. -
Do you have gas lift office chairs? We've had an issue like this with some of our multiscreen setups and put it down to a combination of issues related to the dock, chair and cables with no clear 100% answer. Checking up the displayliink support section pointed me to gas lift office chairs as being a factor https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/738618-display-intermittently-blanking-flickering-or-los

Glad we moved to Bromcom for MIS/FMS last year

Boost radio signal in a school building
drutt replied to Danny_11515's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
We got a repeater and had to buy an Ofcom licence as well, ridiculously good value for money as now our radios work on the field across from the school where we have our sports day. We had to have two antenna setup for full inside coverage due to all the concrete and steel works, one on the roof and one in the plant room. We've used Radiocoms as our supplier for over a decade and can happily recommend them, had no problems and they're always quick to provide a quote and technical advice. Edit: Also they've been great for getting our radios repaired, we have to send a few back a year due to drops and other damage that occurs Edit 2: Fun little side story, our licence lapsed one year and it triggered a visit from an Ofcom engineer, was a unique little experience to go through the frequencies we used with him on his tester. All was resolved quite quickly, just a missed invoice all in all. -
No, if a student brought their phone in and asked it would be reported to their head of year and likely confiscated / sanctioned.

Sophos modifying CSS on websites?
drutt replied to SJ98's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Easy way to test is to setup an exception and add the address your finance website is hosted on: https://docs.sophos.com/nsg/sophos-firewall/19.5/Help/en-us/webhelp/onlinehelp/index.html?contextId=web-exceptions -
We used AnyDesk during Covid but I got tired of the constant dropouts, tested RustDesk which was not bad, just a little tedious to setup at the time. We currently use Supremo https://www.supremocontrol.com/ and it's pretty much been perfect, it'll kick you off if you do anything with elevated permissions for a minute or so but otherwise it has made remoting into clients very easy.

How do you afford to replace your computers on an ongoing basis?
drutt replied to kennysarmy's topic in How do you do....it?
We've started buying refurb kit in areas where it makes sense, like Sixth Form or Support Staff. We gave up on extended warranties for student and staff kit years ago, the last one we bought was probably 2015. It just didn't make financial sense when keyboard damage or broken screens would void it almost immediately, other than a spate of broken USB-C charging ports that put us off buying anything that has just USB-C charging with laptops, we generally don't get other hardware problems where the extended warranty would make sense, and we have stuff from 2016. We refreshed our servers and SAN in 2022-23 F/Y (replacing kit from 2015), warranties for those are due this coming financial year and we'll go for a 3rd party break fix option to keep costs down. We did WiFi in 2023-24 F/Y, stayed with Aruba but replaced our hardware controller and went with the virtual controller and very happy with it and performance Firewall and endpoint security with broadband is locked in until 2028 Switches are around 10 years old but happy with their performance and we invested in a 10GB backbone originally so no real need to refresh anytime soon. We do most repairs ourselves in house, this obviously means lots of time during holidays spent repairing keyboards and screens if needed. We're hoping to get a computer suite (or three) over the next few years as we find vandalism and damage happens more often with laptops than desktops, and generally desktops are cheaper and less time intensive to repair. This also doesn't consider the benefit of the teacher being able to just walk into a room, turn the computers on and ideally have kids working in 5 minutes, rather than the current process of booking a laptop trolley, collecting the key and then going to get the laptops with a class group of students. Then repeating this process at the end of the lesson in reverse. -
I wouldn't be surprised if ESS released in one of their updates, since setting up the SIMS/FMS to call home for licencing, to also self-destruct at contract expiration if no new key is found.

Esports Local Authourity Filtering and Firewall issues
drutt replied to PotNoodleTech's topic in Esports
We took our firewall and broadband in-house back in 2019, before that we were using LEA firewalling, filtering and broadband. It feels like we're much more secure now and more able to quickly adapt to changes in the security environment than before. Also their AV solution was McAfee 🤮 -
We've been using DPM for our back-up solution since around 2015, we buy around £1200 worth of Azure credits a year and depending on the amount of data kept top it up occasionally.

Educational cutbacks following latest govt announcement
drutt replied to C3PO's topic in MIS Systems
Worksheets, oh the worksheets that could just be stuck on the screen/email/teams for the students, printed just so they can get thrown away at the end of the lesson. So much wasted printing. Thankfully I've managed to convince plenty of the largest print users to make their A4 booklets A5 which brings in some savings. The amount of whole year group A4 booklets that were being printed in full colour every term was a huge waste of money and time for repro. -

Personally if I was using new timetabling software (and new to timetabling in general) I'd get the school/employer to pay for appropriate training

Windows 11 pro at home, mostly for gaming. Have zero problems with it

Most of our staff use laptops so we'll provide them with a wireless mouse if they ask

We also have Ricoh MFDs via LEA framework here and we just organise a used toner collection as needed via UPS using https://www.ricoh-return.com/en/start. Very easy, just box them all up, including any waste toner bottles, and put in Reception for collection. Doing that going on 12 years now and love the simplicity.

That 2000 limit isn't too bad, just means our comms will need to be more sensible and focused. With MCAS a lot of these emails get sent as push notifications via the app anyway.
-
We use our own 365 SMTP settings, I don't remember how I got it working but as I look over to the mailbox we use sitting with 31,000 emails sent since 27th Jan I think it's best we don't have to pay for the email function.
-
We use our LEA framework, been with Ricoh since 2013 and no plans to go elsewhere as the price is always good, machines are reliable and engineers, when needed, usually come out same or next day. Also recommend PaperCut as the management solution, with PaperCut deploy it makes managing printers and queues an absolute breeze.

Blocking students sending to All staff email - HELP
drutt replied to maxrebo's topic in How do you do....it?
We use delivery management in the specific group on the exchange portal for this in 365: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/recipients/distribution-groups?view=exchserver-2019#delivery-management -
Could be your Endpoint, most have web filters built in. We get this occasionally with Sophos.

Transfer .sch.uk domain to another host
drutt replied to mikkydoos's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Had no problems, just had to setup an account and open a support ticket. Once the support agent gave me the details I went into our tsoHost client area and started the transfer. Took barely any time at all.- 18 replies
