I think that's a fair enough comment! I get a bit curious with these sites, but not curious enough to use my own details! I logged into this with the e-mail address '[email protected]' and password of 'nochance' (the same password I give the kids when they ask for the admin one in school!) It came back with no password error, etc 8O no surprise really!! Enough edugeek distraction, back to the cleaning and cooking lunch........

Just tried logging in to it: It's nice and secure, here's the URL it uses (note no https!!) http://www.blockdelete.com/[email protected]&pass=nochance Funnily enough it didn't come back with a username/password error!

If I remember right (it was a few years ago) I had to approach Schoolzone to get our .sch.uk name released (Don't know why!!) And I agree http://www.maestegcs.bridgend.sch.uk is a long name to remember and type especially when you add in https: and /exchange!! edit - And we host our site internally, so we can pretty much run what we want on it! Well put, they're often very easy to spot as well! Our recently promoted head of IT is from industry, the (positive) difference is already noticeable. I'm very grateful for her support in helping plan the IT for the move to our new school next year

In my experience roaming = slow logon! I remember our previous head of IT moaning that one day it took him a lesson to logon at our lower school site, when I checked his desktop was 1gb and his profile was in upper school, I think at the time we had a 2MB link between the two...............

I currently work in a server room (6 servers, comms rack) with one technician it it hot and noisy, but when I measured the noise level it was well below the 85dB level but loud enought to be a PITA when on the phone! In our new school (Sept next year) we have a tiny server room with aircon and an office/workshop upstairs, annoyingly though it has no windows I'm fighting to have a small classroom (with windows!) which I was originally allocated to teach iPro and CCNA in, but due to techie workload I no longer have time for. Fingers crossed. @uraken If you want I'll see if I can scan/send you a copy of our plans with the server room and our IT office/workshop marked on if you want. I know our server room only got put in as our LEA asked for it!! Don't give up, as ChrisH says drag the architect into your server room for a meeting, or anyone in school management!!! Good luck!!

My first reaction was it's a setup! But it looks genuine, so fair play that's amazing playing!!

In some cases that's very true training at the right time (not months in advance!) is key, in others it's people wanting them because they look good! Most are just projection screens, but try and take them away to use elsewhere

Buy an interactive whiteboard and see if anyone actually uses it 8O

Whenever I've reinstalled or updated the data has always been there when I've gone intot he console, often to my surprise! Have you tried to Sophos support? On the rare occasion I've used them they've been quite helpful.

It sure is the same people, They were saved at the last hour by an investment (Think it was time/tiny ). Our account manager did inform me of the details forthe future but I can't remember! There's some kind of background company change going on that'll be in effect from January. As there's much less staff there I have noticed a delay in getting a response from our account manager and support, it is a big shame that happened as they did make damn good PCs and importantly gave good support.

It was worth a try!

I think you're right, there would have been a lot of bad press if it had to be installed across a load of servers!

GUI admin which is due in 2K7 SP1 for: a) bulk creation of mailboxes etc, b) pretty much everything to admin Public Folders. You can use powershell, CSV files etc. but that really hurts when you're accustomed to the ADUC extensions you get with E2K3. The trouble with this whole thread is that many of the opinions based on E2K3 are irrelevant for E2K7 e.g. reliability not really established, it does do disclaimers, it eats plenty of RAM (I'd take the MS figure for RAM (2GB plus 2MB - 5MB per mailbox) seriously. Note: You'll have to check into the justification, but I think MS suggest 8GB maximum for an "all-the-bits-on-one box" E2K7. Possibly just to persuade you to buy a second server licence etc., but I don't know. Good point, most of us will not be familiar with E2K7! The guys from our county were telling me the other day that to set up E2K7 properly they had to use a lot of servers, don't know how true this is! And that it's very different to manage. One muppet in county managed to delete one of our admin network users - they first picked the wrong user, then went and removed the mailbox (which this user didn't actually have)! I had great fun demanding an explanation for how this happened!!

That's good advice from DMcCoy Due to lack of funds, space, etc, we run Exchange 2003 on a DC which is also the print server 8O (I know , I know!!)..................... It actually works well, but next year when we move to our new school Exchange will be on its own brand new non-DC server One of the issues with Exchange on a 2003 DC is the shutdown process, due to the way Windows stops the services it takes a very long time to reboot. I found a script on the Internet which sorts this out (it stops the services in the correct order!)

Pro: Have to agree with Maniac, I've had E2k3 running for a few years now with about 300 accounts (haven't setup for years 7-11 only staff and 6 form), and (touch wood) have had no issues with it. IIRC it wasn't too expensive for the server (I think we had it under select), the CALS were something like a £1 each. Pro: Once exchange is installed to create a mailbox is as easy as adding the Exchange admin tools (if you want to work from your PC) and right clicking on the user(s) accounts and selecting create mailbox. Con: If the install screws up it can mean a complete O/S install (certainly with E2k3 it did!), fortunately for me it was only during the testing phase I found this out! You need to make sure that DNS is working properly or you will have issues (goes without saying it should be running properly anyway!)

Not sure how you've got your user areas setup. On the share tab you can prevent the folders being cached offline, if each user area is shared should be a case of job done, if it's the folder above that's shared I'll pass that over to someone else for suggestions!!

I can't see the WAG funding that for all schools that need, and how many primary school budgets can afford it?? The whole idea is badly, or rather not, thought through!!!

Are you sure it has no RAID controller? The documentation suggests it has a CERC SATA 6 channel RAID card If it doesn't, I would suggest buying one, as stated above hardware RAID is the preferred choice! Chris
