Are the files unhidden automatically when the deivce is removed from a school computer? Can they not just navigate to the file using the Windows Explorer address bar as the file still technically exists on the USB stick or do you restirct that via GPO too. Its an interesting take on the problem, I may even pinch the idea as an alternative option for my app! Cheers

Does anyone in a school use any software to monitor and control what files students bring in to school on portable media? I think such software exists in fact I'm sure it does as I remember having a demo of it quite sometime ago the name just escapes me at this moment in time. I want to know how well the software works within a school environment and some recommendations so I can research a project I have going on at the moment. Students and USB media isn't a huge problem here at the moment but its starting to become annoying! Group policy seems to only restrict access to executable file types leaving students free reign to bring in flash games, music and videos on portable media and mobile bloody phones. We'd love the ability to control file access on removable media but I don't think the school is willing to fork out for the luxury. I'm looking at creating an application to do this for me or at least provide some of the functionality that the paid for packages provide. I've already got code which can scan a removable device when it is detected and delete any banned file types it finds. Only problem with the code at the moment is that it deletes the files without warning to the user! I'm looking to develop this further so that the application is able to warn the user if banned file types are detected giving the user the option to remove the device before the files are deleted. I'm also looking to scan the content of the drive and output to file a list of all the filenames found on the device. I'm sure the school will be allowed to delete banned file types from removable media if the school AUP is updated to state this, what I'm unsure about is if we can scan the content of the media and make a record of this along with the name of the user who has plugged it in as it’s likely to be classed as personal property of the user? Is anyone able to shed any light on this for me please?

Get an option to select a digital certificate with no certificates to choose from. Then the dreaded "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" with IE7. Get a "This Connection is Untrusted" using Firefox 3.5.3 and then secure connection failure message with the following error SSL peer was unable to negotiate an acceptable set of security parameters. (Error code: ssl_error_handshake_failure_alert) Safari 4.0.3 refuses to even connect to the page.

A couple of things to try Check the Event Viewer of the client machine for errors. When your logged in locally can you ping the DC and can you browse to any of its shares? Where in Active Directory is the client machine, have you created an OU for it or is it in the default location?

It looks like the mandatory profile settings have become the default settings for all new profiles. Staff profiles and work are stored on a separate server to student work and the student mandatory profiles are stored on the same two file servers used for student work. Not sure how the mandatory profile has become the default domain profile. I haven't tried creating a profile from a working workstation will give that a try tonight. Cheers

Depends to be honest sometimes i will create accounts from scratch and other times using the method you mention. Staff and student accounts are in separate OUs within AD. All new staff accounts are created within the necessary OU for their role i.e Support Staff, Teaching Staff etc. Don't think this has happened the only change ever made to the mandatory since it was introduced was a couple of updates for new software.

We have been using mandatory profiles for students here for over a year now and it works very well indeed. I followed the guide on the wiki pages here to create the small mandatory profile. During the half term break I have noticed that any new accounts that are created for a staff user (who use roaming profiles) the new profile that is created is a replica of the mandatory profile used by students! I'm guessing this isn't normal as all the restrictions are also being applied to the newly created staff account. Its strange that the student accounts all work fine, I only noticed the issue when creating the new accounts because I can't get SIMS to work once the new profile loads. Anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening? Any help would be much appreciated.

That might be the case, but I found out yesterday when trying to place an order with the Education Store directly that there is a minimum order value of £5,000! If your order doesn't meet the minimium spend you are simply redirected to a Apple Education Solutions Expert instead.

Agreed would make things a lot easier if this was done. Think the BLOXX solution is doing a similar thing but what they haven't accounted for is the amount of work required by users to tag and categorise each video. Seems a cheek to charge so much for a solution that requires a vast amount of work to be put in by the end user to get it to work as it should!

Problem with teachertube is that it's not YouTube, not my words just what I have been told by numerous members of staff here when I have suggested it as an alternative. Have also tried to host our own YouTube in house but it never worked think it was too much to expect from the staff here to research and supply content for the in house version. Think the most annoying thing for staff here is that there is a blanket ban on YouTube imposed by the LEA, but whenever the LEA provide subject specific training to school staff more often than not there is always references to YouTube resources within the training

Have had a quick read through the brochure and unless I have missed something it does seem to do much automated content filtering, looks like it relies on content being submitted by teachers for approval before it can be viewed. Interesting to hear what others here think and to see how many schools and authorities are looking at this solution. We use BLOXX as our web filter have just emailed them to see if our LEA has approached them regarding the unit and to see if I can have one to trial

Our school is looking to purchase some 16GB 3GS iPhones for SLT and other members of staff. They have decided to purchase the iPhones outright without contact. Seems everyone is willing to use their own personal contract rather than having to go through the hassle of telling everyone their new number and having to carry two phones with them. Can anyone recommend a supplier or quote me for 10 phones please? Does anyone know if you can purchase them to work on all networks or do they have to be unlocked? Two of the phones will be on Vodafone whilst the others on O2. Have tried the LEA and they only supplier Vodafone devices. Cheers

We have a mandatory profile here and the desktop background is set via GPO, however when students right clicked images within IE or the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and clicked set as background, the chosen image would temporarily be set as the wallpaper but then it would revert back to the one assigned via GPO just as quickly. To get around this we use the following two options: 1. For IE we use the following registry entry Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop] "NoChangingWallPaper"=dword:00000001 This will grey out the 'Set as Background' within IE whenever a image file is right clicked. 2. To stop them using the stupid Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to set images as desktop wallpaper run regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll from the command line to unregister the necessary dll. Hope this helps

It certainly is a power house, quite the step up from my Core Duo MacBook. The issue with BootCamp hasn't really affected my decision to go Windows based for this laptop as its for home use the wife will also need to use it and she is anti Apple! Think you may have a point with this based on the fact that it will certainly broaden the range of laptops available. I've worked on a 13.3" MacBook for ages and never had an issue with the small screen size was mainly looking for something a little more portable than my MacBook Pro and alot faster than my S101. I must admit the Toshiba L500 laptops have great specification for the price. However as silly as it sounds I'm not keen on laptops having a numeric pad it just doesn't look right!

I did notice that they were a little power hungry, didn't think that would have been much of an issue for modern day laptop batteries. Giving it some more thought now I'm starting to think that in a smaller form factor the laptop could get quite hot too! Suppose it was wishful thinking looking for a power house laptop in a small form factor.

No need to hide behind a sofa! I already have one of the current Mac Book Pros mines the MB986*/A with a 2.8GHz processor, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD drive. This one has to be Windows based, as much as I love my Macs i hate to admit the fact that you can't do everything on a Mac.

I'm looking for a new laptop for myself and need some advice in picking one. Although I say it's for me I suspect it will be mainly used for work related stuff i.e running VMs, programming, web and graphic design ... Don't think I am too bothered about the brand of the laptop, ideally the screen needs to be around the 13" mark although at a push it could stretch to a 15" screen. DDR3 RAM is a must, was hoping to go for a laptop with a mobile i7 processor. With a little help from Google I can only find laptops with screen sizes between 15" and 18" anyone know of a 13" or thereabouts laptop with a mobile i7 processor?

BIG THANK YOU to everyone for pointing me towards the settings for IE Enhanced Security. What a carry on have added the server to the trusted zone to resolve the issue, that will teach me for blindly applying updates to a server good thing it was only a test rig! Many thanks again everyone

@ superfletch, remove and rejoining the domain was one of the first things I tried but it didn't do the job. @ Cache, yes copying the files from the network location to the server resolves the issue with permissions. Will take a look at the Internet Explorer Security settings tomorrow fingers crossed it will work as it really is starting to annoy me now
