  6. We had a similar issue quite recently which drove me crazy and I’m pretty sure the generated error code is the same. For us though Exam Manager on the RAS wouldn’t work for the Exams Officer but would for me and the rest of the IT Team. Just like you we did the usual checks with regards to the ini file copied them from the SIMS server and nothing worked. That was until I stumbled across the SIMS.INI file in the Windows folder in the Exams Officers User area. Path in the ini file and SIMS installation path were wrong in this file so I replaced it with the one from my user area which was correct and voila problem solved! Hope this helps you out.
  7. Talk about picking the right day to have issues with Solus3! But all joking aside we are having issues deploying updates this morning at one of our sites where we were initially told we didn’t need the Summer update. The site in question reports an ‘Update deployment error. An error has occurred creating the update deployment record. The creator of this fault did not specify a reason’ I’ve never seen this before and all the usual tricks of restarting the services, clearing the repository, downloading the update again and running Solus3 as Administrator haven’t worked. Has anyone else seen this error before and more importantly does anyone know how to fix it?
  8. Suppose you have a point with regards to the need as it’s only to allow us to activate licenses via KMS which we can easily sidestep by using the MAK. I was under the impression the only way to reset the SID was to SysPrep in Windows 7 as the NewSID utility no long works. I’ll have another look at the xml file and see if anything flags up, to be fair it’s one I grabbed online and modified so I may just need to create a new one for testing.
  9. I’m having a bit of a crisis with SysPrep and FOG and I was hoping someone could shed some light on where I’m going wrong. We have always used FOG to image workstations and never used SysPrep before as we simply relied on the FogPrep script but I’m pretty sure that doesn’t work anymore. Last year we had some issues activating Windows using our KMS server due to duplicate workstation SID. We managed to resolve the issue by using the MAK key instead and I wanted to fix the issue during the summer break as we update all the images during this time. I have done all the necessary updates to an existing image and now I have an updated Windows 7 64bit image and it’s ready to be uploaded to FOG. I have a basic answer file and I’ve ran C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /unattend:c:\unattend.xml /shutdown The workstation does it’s thing regarding SysPrep and then shutsdown. I configured FOG to capture the image and power on the workstation and it PXE boots and FOG captures the image. After the image is captured the machine reboots and goes through the Windows setup process and the machine is ready to use after a while. Looking good so far … I’ve then tried to deploy the captured image to other workstations and after deployment they reboot and go through the Windows setup stages and that’s when things start to unravel as the workstations all report the ‘Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation.’ Restarting doesn’t fix the issue and the machines are stuck in a loop. I thought it was because our FOG deployment is configured to join the domain so I have disabled that but that didn’t help matters. School closed before I had a chance to check the SysPrep logs so that’s something I’ll be doing tomorrow. I don’t think it’s the answer file as the host machine goes through the SysPrep process without any issues. I’m hoping I don’t need to create an image from scratch as I was thinking SysPrep was going to be a simple solution to the issue with duplicate SID. But I am running out of ideas as to what the issue could be so I am hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Since the host machine goes through the SysPrep process fine after the image has been captured (I’ve done that twice) I’m thinking that the image capturing process with FOG could be the culprit as I am deploying the image to identical workstations.
  10. So the command is as follows New-TransportRule "#RULENAME" -SubjectOrBodyContainsWords (Get-Content #PathToCSV) -RejectMessageReasonText "Profanity Detected Message Not Delivered." Just replace the #RULENAME with something to identity the rule in Exchange Online and #PathToCSV needs to exist on the local machine you’re using to connect to Exchange Online with.
  11. You can use Powershell to import the files from a csv. I’ll dig up the commands and post they’re here for you.
  12. When we first deployed 365 I was surprised this function wasn’t built in by design or at the very least the functionality to simply enable it. We ended up scouring google for various profanity lists and we created our own list from these and imported it in to Exchange online with Powershell. The Powershell essentially created mailflow rules designed to block messages based on content taken from the csv files we created.
  13. We are currently looking in to Chromebooks as an alternative to Windows laptops. Can’t really ignore the Chromebooks for internet based research and tasks for some subject areas and obviously the cost makes them appealing too. We are an Office 365 school and I am hoping to integrate the Chromebooks with AD. In my head I want users to log in with AD credentials, sign in to 365 seamlessly with SSO use Office in the cloud, print and use online resources like Doddle, MyMaths etc I originally thought that I would have to setup a G-Suite domain but searching online it looks like my option is to set up Chrome Enterprise Active Directory, so that was a relief assuming I’m correct! We have a test Chromebook ordered to go through the process and see the restrictions available with Chrome Enterprise Active Directory and it’s accompanying group policies. Ideally I just want to be able to install the extensions for Impero and PaperCut. Push out proxy settings and stop users from modifying things. Has anyone done anything similar? I would really appreciate any insight or advice from anyone that’s done anything similar or has any experience with Chromebooks.
  14. We blocked them here this year in preparation of GDPR as quite frankly as well as being a potential source of a data breach it’s just makes no sense to carry a USB drive these days with cloud storage. We use group policy to block all usb devices and then created a whitelist of allowed devices blocking all portable usb devices other than the hardware encrypted ones we on rare occasions might supply staff. We allow obvious things like keyboard, mice etc but only school owned cameras are allowed to connect and the polices also block phones and tablets. The guide I used can be found here http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/gtate/archive/2010/02/07/windows-7-restricting-and-securing-usb-storage-devices/ if anyone else is interested in this approach. It uses a combination of System Device Class GUIDs and Device Hardware IDs to manage to allowed devices. Had no grumble from staff and it’s increased the uptake of OneDrive and any visitors are simply asked to email anything they might need to the school beforehand.
  15. Got the email from Microsoft this morning regarding the tool and it looks really useful. For anyone interested the link to the tool is https://servicetrust.microsoft.com
  16. https://www.methodmaths.info Does anyone use this resource at their schools? I’ve been asked to look at getting a subscription and I’m not really sure what to make of the site, it’s not the most professional looking one I’ve ever seen. Reading through the FAQ it says we need to upload student information from SIMS to create accounts. There’s no privacy statement on the site as to how the data will be handled. We’ve contacted them and heard nothing back about this or GRPR. My fact finding mission hasn’t gone down well with the teacher who has requested it but I don’t fancy sharing sensitive data with a company that can’t even spell VAT!
  17. I came across the same dilemma when we set up or 365 tenant. I spoke to Microsoft and they told me that it can’t be done. I have set up alerts in the Security and Compliance Center to be notified each time someone uploads a file to OneDrive. Outlook filters these emails for me and flags up anything that contains thing like .vbs, .exe, .msi etc. It’s not an ideal solution but it works for us and our filtering policy to deny the download of exes is set higher than the allow so they can’t download the files anyway.
  18. This has been something we have been thinking about too and we are taking a similar approach to @jthompson all current third party websites and applications will be checked for GDPR compliance so we can create a list of approved third party services (data processors) and anything new will have to be checked by whoever is given the role of GDPR. And anything that doesn’t meet compliance will be given the boot! Consent isn’t the only issue here as mentioned by @GrumbleDook it has to be explicitly given under GDPR but the fact that the third party is processing personal data of an EU citizen it has to be checked for GDPR compliance. If the third party site is part of the curriculum or suggested by an exam board you may get away with consent as it needs to be used for the curriculum but I don’t think this omits GDPR compliance. At the end of the day after May if your school gets a written request for all data held on someone or a request for data deletion can you be sure that these third parties and other data processors can provide you with the information or delete the information for you within the allocated time to respond.
  19. We have always used the Integral Dual range of encrypted memory pens as they have two passwords and are Mac compatible. Probably not the cheapest around but the dual compatibility and the fact that there’s an admin password to retrieve data if the user forgets theirs is a huge plus. https://www.integralmemory.com/product/courier-dual-fips-197-encrypted-usb-3.0-superspeed
  20. Totally agree that the comments have downplayed the conflict of interest and have just made things more confusing. The video states that the Head of the school and the IT Manager are excluded from the role due to conflict of interest where as the advice from GDPR In Schools say the Network Manager, Head, Designated Safeguarding Person, or Business/MIS Manager as being excluded from the role due to a conflict of interest.
  21. It’s been snowing steadily here, in Peterlee pretty much all day.
  22. Although I’ve never had to do this, I have practised the procedure should I ever be required to delete an email sent to all users in our tenant. I followed the instructions outlined here to delete an email from user mailboxes using PowerShell https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff459253(v=exchg.150).aspx
  23. I’m pretty sure Salamander can do this now that’s what I was told by one of their support guys recently.
  24. Yes it’s turned on within the Admin console for all users as we made sure to disable the private chatting feature.
  25. We had the issue even before we hid the groups, it’s very strange and even has the guys at Microsoft scratching their heads!
