We are in a similar situation plans have been drawn up for the new school and they have yet to be signed off, the whole "spade in the ground" isn't happening till early next year so its still up in the air. School has yet to sign up to the LEA Managed Service Solution but we have been told that the funding for our wave of schools is secure.

Thats whats I have already tried to do. When I create a New Resolution I give it a name and set the resolution to 1024 x 768 and hit Save. The Resolution list is updated with my new resolution details but the settings revert back to 800 x 600. I have also just noticed that I can't delete any resolutions that I jave created, couldi t be an issue with permissions?

Am I missing something or are Xibo layouts limited to a resolution of 800 x 600? I'm trying to setup a new layout with a 1024 x 768 resolution, each time I create a new resolution it keeps reverting back to 800 x 600. So it's either not supported or I'm doing something stupid.

Give up after only checking 20!!! Students at your place are lightweights when I first started here it wasn't uncommon to see kids spend an entire lesson trying to find game sites and usually with out consequence.

This is certainly true as I asked the very same question during a BSF meeting and got told that there won't be a internet 'watchdog' keeping an eye on students and the sites they visit and use. I think it’s fair to say that everyone at some point has been through his process and it is a never ending battle. Our filter generates a report at the end of the day which categorises the most hit websites, the users who have transferred most data from the web I also get emails every time someone tries to access inappropriate sites and finally persistent students have a screenshot taken of their active screen when they log on to keep an eye on them too. All this information is checked daily and appropriate action is taken. We don't ban the kids here anymore as I got sick of being asked to unblock kids because they had important course work to do, we only ban in severe cases. Students who keep trying to play games just have the ability to run flash and the like disabled. The problem boils down to two things classroom management and student behavior. I have been down the route of reporting members of staff and it doesn't change a thing, a day or two later the same thing happens again so I don't bother with that anymore. One thing I have managed to do is have the Behavior Policy in the school updated to include breaches of the student ICT policy. Coupled with the banning of flash it seems to have worked to some extent students now given detentions, consequences and all incidents are logged on the Pastoral side of things within SIMS. Its far from an ideal situation but now that students know that there is more consequences other than a telling off they are less inclined to try, but of course the situation it isn't helped by those members of staff who want an easy lesson and simply turn a blind eye.

Pretty much the same setup here too, took some doing to get the staff to contonually use it but its now used almost everytime Emails picked up on phone which helps when around the school, we also list the number of open problem on the staff intranet so they can see how busy we potentially are.

It does sound like a GPO problem that is possibly causing the issue. You could check to see if the Domain Admins group is part of the local Administrator Group on the problematic workstation before making any changes in AD. If your domain permits it you could try logging on locally and running the install, if that works it's likely to be a GPO issue.

Scanning the servers would also be a good bet but you might want to leave that till after school as it's likely to slow down your netowork, but then again if it's already slow will anyone notice? You might want to setup a machine to ping one of the servers overnight to see if the problem still occurs with no users on the network this should indicate if its a problem with your switches/servers rather than client machines. Something like Colasoft Ping Tool would do nicely its free and has a graphical interface to show you the response times.

Very much so if the virus has created a 'autorun.inf' file on the memory stick the virus will run eachtime it is plugged in! We had a similar problem here a few years back during an OFSTED Inspection think the suspect file being ran was called 'win.exe' which came from an infected memory stick and ended up infecting networked machines! Does sound like your problem is likely to be a virus of some sorts, hope you find the source of the problem soon!

Agree with sted, you need to disconnect your switches from each other to try and isolate the problem on your network. Assuming its a cabling problem (ie a loopback) you will need to unplug the cables from the switch and watch for when the light show calms down! It could also be caused by a virus infected machine on the network, so running something like Wireshark will help to isolate any machines on your network that are broadcasting huge amounts of traffic and data across the network. Does the broadcast storm happen at any particular time of the day or is it just random? How many servers do you have at the school?

Couldn't agree with you more about that, I will even stick my neck out and say that I think alot of bad decisions have been made by the LA regarding the proposal of the BSF Solution. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think any schools or school IT staff were consulted when it was decided to go for a VDI solution and I don't think an alternative has ever been put on the table. Testing of the solution was all done behind closed doors with a select few schools invited to see it working, from what I have been told the Proof of Concept was only ever tested on a LAN! My school was actually asked to take part in the testing of the proposed VDI solution to see how it would work over the WAN but that never happened even though I setup half an ICT Suite ready for use. What's even more crazy is that the LA is still signing up schools to the Managed Service even though it hasn't managed to get it working! My meeting with the BSF team is still going ahead today, if anyone in Durham wants to get me to ask some questions on their behalf just PM me and I will do my best to get them answered.

I thought the school pre BSF was running a Cisco and Citrix based thin client infrastructure. A similar solution to what BSF are offering you'd think that if it works over a LAN it should work over the WAN asumming the infrastructe is in place to do so. I'm sure my line manager mentioned the information about the schools pre BSF kit as he was impressed by the revelation at a BSF Meeting he attended a couple of years ago. 28.9Mega Bytes, if it was a solution that does network booting wouldn't the data transfer occur at the beginning of the sessions? Looking back through the NTOP stats for the device during connectivity it kept getting a stream of data sent to it. Going back to the LA solution for BSF as mentioned on here by many folk it is a good solution in theory I don't actually think the solution it self is flawed at all atleast not the Citrix part. Where the proposed solution fails is with the infrastructure of the WAN, I personally think that this is the weak link in the equation and has been for quite sometime.
