1. Depends on your given definition of 'good' 'Good' as in 'Good to play'? Probably, though I'm not a Marines player. Most of the marine factions are pretty playable right now, except maybe Black Templar IIRC. Your basic Ultramarines consistently do alright, Oath of Moment is a solid army ability (each army gets their own signature abilities), they're relatively easy to learn to play, and they have units for basically everything you want to do. Do I like em? No. Would I play them? Nuh-uh. But that's just personal preference, and I can't deny they aren't the safe pick to learn the game with. 'Good' as in 'the good guy'? No. Nobody is good in 40k. It's a universe where the entire galaxy has been ravaged by war for over 10,000 years. Good guys died out long ago. That being said, the first rule of 40k is the rule of cool. Actual rules, as in game-rules, change per edition, per balance patch, etc. What you think looks cool doesn't. So part of your army decision should be 'Who do I think looks badass?'. Is that the spiky space bugs that devour entire planets? The muscular and mental build-rocket-cars-from-scrap orks? The plucky humans who fight against demons and machines of war with nothing more than a lasrifle and a dream? The big power armour guys? The power armour guys but with spikes? etc.
2. Well, first what gamemode are you playing? Kill Team, Combat Patrol, King of the Colosseum (not an official gamemode, but still fun), or standard 40K? Secondly, pick a faction to play: Space Marines are the 'vanilla' faction but are decent (they're commonly thought of as 'the good guys', but nobody is 'good' in 40k, it's all various flavours of space-racist and good old wartime xenophobia). There's different flavours depending on what you like, from templar looking dudes, to sneaky guys, to teleporting demon-hunters. Adepta Sororitas (Sisters of battle) are nuns with guns. They love bolters and flamers Adeptus Custodes are specialists in every way. The cheapest army to collect as every model is like 300 points. Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) are your normal humans, but they can do a lot. Chaos space marines (and their variants) are space marines who went 'evil' and turned away from humanity. Some worship war, some pestilence, some excess, and some magic/foresight/that sort of thing, and some worship any that gives them power. Chaoes Daemons are... well, demons. From the warp. Chaosy. Orks are angy space mushrooms that love a good fight, up close and personal style. T'au are 'for the greater good' (but still pretty space-racist) and enjoy lots of big long-range guns Aeldari are specialists who devote themselves to a particular type of warfare as a form of meditiation Drukhari are the 'evil aeldari', are fast-paced glass cannons, frail but dangerous when played right AdMech are.. weird. I don't even know how to describe them. Tyranids are hungy space bugs. Lil bugs, big bugs, shooty bugs, stompy bugs, they have 'em all. Genestealer Cults are Tyranid pre-invasion forces that hide on a planet, multiple, then spring free all at once Leagues of Votann are... space miners? I think? Relatively new, I don't know that much about them Necrons are the Terminator. Literally. "I'll be back" is one of their rules. There's probably far better descriptions out there. Once you know what faction you want to play, you need an army list. If you haven't purchased a codex, Wahapedia and New Recruit are good resources to have in your back pocket. You need to decide how many points a game is. There are rules tweaks for 1000 point games, but typically games are played to 2000 points. But 2000 points costs more money, obvs. Finally, once you have an army list, buy (and preferably paint) your models, get 'em on the table, and see how you go. Edit: Totally happy to sit with you in a Discord call and go through it a bit more in-depth, if you'd like.
3. Indeed.. Tabletop Simulator: See Tabletop Simulator on Steam There are community mods that allow for modelling and playing 40k online. Probably Sigmar too but I don't play that so haven't looked into it. Combined with an army list builder with Yellowscribe support (e.g. New Recruit) you have everything you need to built and play whatever faction you like. I started using it to test lists so I didn't buy models I don't need, but it is also a convenient way to get a game in, especially when you can save the current state and come back to it later, a definite boon for adult life.
4. Great to see little ones getting involved. Make 'em play Warhammer and they'll never have money spare for any other vices! I still need to find myself somewhere to play/some irl opponents.. Although that also means I need to paint more. All of my games this year have been over Tabletop Simulator 😅
5. I mean, on one hand, I do try to take the opinion of experts. On the other, obvious agenda is obvious, y'know? There's a balancing act to be struck here. While you're probably very well equipped to speak of the benefits of NOVA T6, you making an account and immediately slating the competition feels a bit like a conflict of interest. I also don't think it's reasonable for you to say only timetablers understand efficacy. I know we like to have a bit of a gripe about SLT sometimes but to imply they have zero grasp of the concept of 'paying a little more for a better product' and instead always pick the cheapest option is, in my experience, absolutely no the case. (Sometimes, in fact, they even pay more for a worse product) Now I can't say for certain if NOVA T6 was only used because of SIMS' previous dominance or not, but I expect so, because why buy a second timetable software if the current one works? What I can say, though, is with the positive press for alternatives in this thread, by people I trust to be competent IT operatives, I'd definitely be looking at all my options before making a decision. I can also say I shared an office with the timetabler for 8 years who used solely NOVA T6 and some of the expletives I overheard would make a sailor blush, so whilst I don't want to be misconstrued that I'm suggesting it's terrible or not up to the job, I don't have the impression it's as seamless as you're making it out to be. But I left to play the other side (corporate), so YMMV.
6. I can appreciate that. I actually like how 10th edition plays too, the mission deck is a good idea (especially as a nids player where tabling your opponent isn't always viable) and most of the errata is for the positive. The comeback deck (I forget its official name) is good too. The extra Incursion/1000 pt rules are nice too as I prefer lower points games for their speed. I've always been in the mind that rules should be free though, so buying mission decks is a bit of a pain. Points errata I don't mind though. It's a faff, sure, but it does attempt to keep the game balanced. The changes to stratagems, what can and can't be reduced, etc, is what bug me, because I can never remember them 😅 I've been getting into Warhammer via Tabletop Simulator recently. Takes maybe 20 mins to set up your army but it's a one-time thing and once you've done you have it ready to drop whenever, so it's just jump in and go.
7. Speaking of Warhammer, since I'm reminded this thread exists, I did recently pick up and paint a Warboss as a palate cleanser (and also be has of the aforementioned patience-losing with the Gargoyles...)
8. 😮 The Start Collecting box with a Trygon and Genestealers? There's a blast from the past! I find colour shift rarely ever looks good in photographs but looks fantastic in real life where the light (or your eyes) can move. I toyed with the idea of doing the same for mine! Great work on the base too. I never liked how the Trygon just.. sits there.. when it's supposed to be a burrowing monster but yours definitely fits the bill! I'm in the middle of painting 10 Gargoyles at the moment and I'm really losing my patience with them lol
9. We see issues with new outlook once a week or so, why MS are so adamant they want everyone to switch to it without full feature parity is beyond me. Not being able to favourite shared mailbox folders has been a repeated issue. All we can do is shift them back to classic.
10. Obligatory UwUntu mention Windows 11 Pro at home and Enterprise at work. Had no issues with either of them, everything I need works.
11. I didn't ever find the solution. The user in question I was prepping the headset for was on a W10 device so it turned out this was a non-issue (perhaps it would have been but he may have disabled this setting himself at some point), but with the demise of 10 I expect it'll crop up again as we migrate users, so much appreciated nonetheless 🙂
12. Still works, and saved me today. Muchas gracias!
13. To clarify, I'm not saying they don't, it's just a matter of definitions. I'd consider something being 'a magazine shop' to be mostly if not entirely magazines-focused. Games Workshop stores are a miniature tabletop gaming shop, hobbycraft is a craft shop, Matalan is a clothing shop, etc. The supermarkets sell magazines, my local offie sells magazines, they aren't magazine shops. I'd consider WHSmiths more of a 'general store' than 'a magazine shop'. Perhaps a bit pedantic, wasn't intending to offend, just thinking out loud.
14. Are they really a 'magazine shop'? They've all been selling all sorts of random knickknacks for as long as I can remember. Doesn't help when even a pack of pens is mega overpriced. Admittedly I nipped into WHSmiths (amongst other shops, they were just the first I found that had it) to get some super glue the other week and even that was overpriced for a tiny bottle. If I wasn't so impatient, I'd have ordered it from Amazon and had it the next day, double the quantity for half the price, but I had Warhammer bases to build lol They usually had a lot of shelf space for books, and stationary. They could've gone down the café route some Waterstones have done, for example? Throw in free WiFi and now you've tapped into the 'I write my screenplay on my macbook in a coffee shop' crowd.
15. .. is it? They didn't really keep up with the times and their higher prices and refusal to innovate have cost them. The Works will easily fill the gap, I reckon.

I picked up FragPunk recently and, ignoring the egregious monetisation (NetEase, what do you expect? But it's easily ignorable) it's actually a really solid game. It's much like CS/Valorant, except you don't have the stupid weapon spray patterns to memorise that CS has, and you don't have currency to buy weapons with. Instead, there's a limit of how many of each weapon can be on a team at a time. Like Valorant's characters, FragPunk's playable characters (dubbed 'Lancers') all have unique abilities but nothing too overpowered. The main gimmick is that at the start of each round, up to 3 cards are displayed for each team, and the team gets to vote on which get into effect. Do you want extra Converters (CS bombs)? Remove a bomb site? Enemies have big heads? Turtle backpacks that block shots from behind? Bullets that slow enemies? Bullets that ricochet? Shoot lightening? Snowy map so you can do slides? Slowly regen health? Abilities slowly refresh? (Typically you get X charges). Reveal enemies to all your teammates through walls if you headshot them? Gain a double-jump? Stay crouched for 10 seconds to lay an egg that can be eaten to regain health? Move quicker the louder you scream into your mic? And tonnes more. Each player gains a currency ('Shards') during the match for getting kills or assists (or just pity shards for losing) that are spent on these cards, and each card needs a differing number of shards to activate. It keeps things fresh.
17. What about an ant that can navigate the high seas? Sextant, of course.
18. BMS alerts go to a shared mailbox, the maintenance team want this to then generate an alert in Teams Right-click channel, Get email address, set up forwarding rule on the shared mailbox, nice and easy. Well, the alert never arrives. It works if members email, so I guess this is permissions, right? Add the mailbox to the team.. Er, can't? Other shared mailboxes show up, so it's definitely possible, but this specific one I want doesn't. It's not a UPN-based thing, as some of the other shared mailboxes that appear have their default onmicrosoft UPN. It's not license based, either, other shared mailboxes that show up are all unlicensed as you'd expect. Tried PowerShell, Get-Team -displayname "Team name" Add-TeamUser -GroupId Team ID -User [email protected] This executes without any error or feedback at all, but the mailbox doesn't show up in the list of Members. Trying Add-TeamChannelUser -GroupId Team ID -DisplayName "Channel name" -User [email protected] produces the following error: Add-TeamChannelUser : Error occurred while executing Add-TeamChannelUser Code: NotFound Message: User 'User GUID, presumably' does not exist. InnerError: RequestId: 2b84f4af-7f66-4e72-828e-ca9d586faa4e DateTimeStamp: 2025-02-24T15:32:21 HttpStatusCode: NotFound At line:1 char:1 + Add-TeamChannelUser -GroupId Team ID -Di ... + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: ( [Add-TeamChannelUser], ApiException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Teams.PowerShell.TeamsCmdlets.ErrorHandling.ApiException,Microsoft.Teams.PowerShel l.TeamsCmdlets.AddTeamChannelUser Presumably adding a shared mailbox is possible because other mailboxes show up in the list. Is there something in the mailbox config that needs setting before it becomes 'fully fledged'? I've tried comparing settings in Exchange and nothing looks any different to the ones that do show up.
19. Make sure there's a proper procedure in place for reporting issues. Get a helpdesk up and running if there isn't one, make sure it's up to snuff if there is. Run SYDI and get a good idea of what's running on the servers on the network Check in with staff. Have an open door policy, invite them to email you, etc. Figure out the biggest issues the users are facing. If you find something that isn't documented, document it as and when you're investigating it.
20. Because the ICO still consider that as consent being freely given - a user can simply choose not to use that platform. https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/uk-gdpr-guidance-and-resources/online-tracking/consent-or-pay/about-this-guidance/
21. My phone flagged my (legitimate) JSA text messages as spam when I signed on in August. Worth mentioning that the shortcode they came from did display as 'DWP', though. Could be dodgy, could be identity fraud. If it didn't come from a random mobile number, I'd personally try and check it out further
22. I can't speak for if it's any good here but both cybersecurity and risk and compliance have approved it for use within the company and I know it's being used reasonably frequently.
23. I genuinely had no idea GW did that kind of thing. Good on you for getting the ball rolling! Fingers crossed it all goes well. Now brace yourself for the rabbit hole.. Paints, layers, glazes, wet palettes, texture mixes, magnets, airbrushing, cork, aquarium gravel, saving every random bit of packaging that has a texture because it 'might be useful'.. Some of your model railway stuff will cross over, no doubt, though I've no idea how the venn diagram would look lol
24. There have been many instances on EduGeek where DrCheese and I have vehemently disagreed about things. This is not one of them. I last went to BETT about three years ago. Maybe four. And I found it to be much the same. Gone were a lot of the actual developers, and in, seemingly, were the booth babes. Just to be clear, I'm not disparaging women because they're conventionally attractive, and I'm a staunch support of visibility of women in tech fields, but I found that when I was asking technical questions it was "Let me just grab..", "So-and-so will know that.." etc. Not every single woman there, obviously I didn't endeavour to talk to them all, I'm no creep, but it did seem they were there in more of a salesy capacity than anything else. There were still some good stalls for kit I feel schools would need. Web filters, hardware, CCTV, classroom management, and accessibility hard/software (I was dead impressed by ORCAM, I think they were called?), I wouldn't say my attendance was worthless, but it started to feel like there was also a lot of what I'm going to call 'SLT-bait' mixed in with it. Expensive shinies that gave me the impression of over-promising the world and charging you out the backside for the privilege. I might as well have defenestrated myself with how hard I facepalmed at the mention of "AI-driven behaviour management".. Now I've gone to the dark side corporate, BETT is obviously a no-go, not at that cost, so I can't speak for how it was this year, but I'd be surprised if there's much different. There'll always be a place for it, it's worth keeping an eye on the direction the industry is going so you can get in the door early or prepare your "that's codswallop, mate" counterpoint (delete as applicable) but it felt to me that it had been leaning away from informational and more towards a 'secure sales leads!' angle as time went on.
25. To be honest, I built a new PC just after Christmas, and if I wasn't recycling my old parts for a living room PC, I'd have just carried over the 3070Ti to the new build. It's still going strong. Thankfully prices have come down and I paid almost half for the 4070SUPER as I did for the 3070Ti (which I paid £950 at the height of the GPU shortage like a mug, and that was definitely a 'good deal' compared to everywhere else at the time!)
