The new GCSE - mass unemployement for School IT Staff?
Modey replied to psydii's topic in General Chat
I've sent my two tech's home since reading this news. Have also turned off our servers, seriously struggling with something to do now! Where's that knitting pattern gone ... -
I want to trap someone...with evidence or a bear-trap. I'm not fussy.
Modey replied to happymeal's topic in General Chat
How about this? Perhaps not available any more due to H&S concerns. -
Some good advice on here so far. Keep it short and sweet and do all the usual thanking etc.. If jokes come naturally to you, throw a couple of light hearted ones in. Doesn't matter if they are cheesy, it's your wedding and you'll have a sympathetic audience. Hope it goes well, and have a great day!

SCDPM Tape Question - Tape Available - Free (contains data)
Modey replied to Fazza's topic in Enterprise Software
What happens if you right click the tape then pick 'Mark as Free'? If that doesn't work, like I said in my original post, you will either need to use a powershell script (there are a few knocking about online) which will allow you to do a forced wipe of the tape. Or un-protect the resources that are backed up on the tape. It should be possible to examine the tape contents and check what's on there and when it was set to expire... Final thing to check is the type of tape. You could be looking at an LTO2 tape and trying to write to it with an incompatible drive (eg LTO4). -

In that case, they should be fine to use. -
SCDPM Tape Question - Tape Available - Free (contains data)
Modey replied to Fazza's topic in Enterprise Software
You should be able to right click the tapes and then pick 'Mark as Free'. In which case it will wipe the tape. If it thinks the contents are still part of an active protection group then you will need to use a powershell script to do a force wipe. That or un-protect the resource that it reckons is still being protected. Depends on the original retention goal that was set also, how long it will want to keep hold of the data. p.s Don't pick 'Erase Tape' when right clicking unless you want to wait a long time. -
I'd quite like to get one of those 'UNT' mugs with the black handle. Not quite brave enough though.

That's a real corker. Prefer a mouse and keyboard experience? So you mean 99% of the people using desktop PC's then ... I think MS have lost it!

I really don't like the interface either, but you can shoehorn a start menu in there quite easily. Also there are some nice new features in Hyper-V that I wouldn't want to be without (Replication for one) which I wouldn't want to skip.

KMS Activation - staff and students from home
Modey replied to burgemaster's topic in Licensing Questions
Why the £8.95? I thought if you signed up for the staff licenses they could have it for nothing? Certainly used to be the case anyway. -
I really can't imagine what you went through with all that (and obviously still are going through. I just hope there is some light at the end of the tunnel for you all. As for religion, I'm not a believer myself but I do respect those who find a comfort in it (my mum being one of them).

7.5hours ... Make sure they don't go for a long toilet break.

Interesting, their Medion kit in the past has been pretty good. You can't expect too much from a 40 quid camera, but it might be nice for some snaps in the swimming / paddling pool with the baby! Edit: It's Magnion, perhaps just an offshoot from Medion. Also looks like it was a Thursday special, dunno if it will still be that price now.

You shouldn't need the sign in assistant no. It should just connect using autodiscovery with the username and password. One problem we did have though was with soft deleted accounts (if you have an account of the same name, and a soft deleted at the same time, it can cause probs connecting with Outlook). When you delete something in O365 it sticks around for 30 days. You can perma delete these users with Powershell though.

Deploying System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection

Fortinet Authentication Issues
Modey replied to huxlow's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yup, same here. We have been having problems since October and they still continue. Sometimes students get staff level access (which is very worrying from a Safeguarding point of view) and sometimes the opposite (staff member with student level access). Staff and students get asked to authenticate and open new windows etc... also, should be fully transparent and it obviously isn't.- 1 reply

[ms office - 2013] 2013 - when will you be making the switch?
Modey replied to mrbios's topic in Office Software
Not planning to roll it out here any time soon as we only recently went to 2010. To be honest I don't like 2013. Installed it on my home machine, then got rid and went back to 2010 pretty quickly. It's just odd using it, the way it even renders text as you type is a bit weird! -
What are you looking at price wise for Specops Deploy then? I guess it would be hard to beat the MS licensing deal that most of us get. I was considering going down the SCCM route myself and it will be very low cost to add to our environment, but I do think it's a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut in this case. edit: Can I also say you need to update your demo form page. It won't accept my email address as it's too long, and the field for my phone number doesn't accept an extension number either. Perhaps you could arrange a demo for me Aravacon?

Yeah it wasn't great for the first two presentations, mainly due to the MS online labs which were not very reliable to say the least. The decision was taken to switch over to using virtual machines via VirtualBox last year and whilst that isn't a perfect solution, it's a much better than relying on the online labs. I'm a tutor for the TM128 and have been since it started, so if anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

Office 365 email account for spiceworks helpdesk
Modey replied to scholes99's topic in Cloud Services
I don't think that works Nadeem, as the standing advice from Spiceworks is to use SMTP to send and IMAP to receive. That's the way I use it with O365, but I don't have a proxy, so it works fine. Guys, you could set up an email relay on IIS which should be able to get through your proxy ok? -
I've had some good experienced of Backup Assist in the past and they also do a fully functional free trial which is handy. DPM is what I use here though. It's not perfect, but if you are backing up mainly MS stuff then it's ace and is also great for Hyper-V backups.

Was good, but I agree with Simcfc, not enough actual Iron Man action in the film really. One is still the best in my opinion. Two and Three roughly equal.
