By using the external DNS name everywhere, when the client is inside they will be using the internal DNS which will point them to the internal IP, when they are outside it will point to the external IP. To the client it will be transparent and all look the same so the certificate will be right as it only checks the DNS name not the IP.

You point everything going to the mail server to external.external.com rather than using your internal address for anything.

No, you point your internal clients at the external address which resolves to your internal ip that way it works inside and outside

Split dns means having external resolve to the external ip when outside and the internal ip when internal, that way the name remains the same and the cert works in both places.

Best I managed was about half an hour, got all their scam details then reported them to the NZ Police scam department and told them so at the end of the call. Surprisingly the ones with the best national and international backhaul and ok tech support are actually Telecom (about to be renamed spark was called xtra) they are more expensive but generally offer plans with a landline which is useful in NZ as VOIP relies on the data working all the time, sort him with a different email address though, they use rebranded yahoo mail and the only people who have a problem getting to telecom email accounts are their actual owners. An outlook.com or gmail.com address with remove 90% of the issues with them. Telstraclear used to be really good for customer service but has gone down hill since being purchased by Vodafone. Slingshot is one of the cheapest but their helpdesk is tragic. Orcon is another big one but I would no longer recommend them as they got brought by the government and took many bad turns. All of the above should be available and are probably in the order of usefulness for actually getting a connection. I'm sure they would, there are degrees though, Microsoft has Microsoft research which has made lots of stuff and released a bunch of it, they also contribute to and donate to OSS as they realise it benefits them too. Facebook have released a bunch of their developments in their database back end and work with google and the others in ultra dense server work. Google despite their evil have made and released a bunch of stuff open source and worked - yes in their own interests - to get ultra fast internet to some and any internet to others, they have google earth and streetview which are rather decent services that can be used by anyone, likewise Bing maps that uses the excellent nokia maps that don't direct you through airfields. World wide telescope, sketchup, Microsoft robotics studio are all hugely useful tools that can be used by anyone. Google has also been a massive contributor to mapreduce and twitter with non-relational database tech, hp donates to OSS but can't think of anything else this second, likewise to dell. This is leaving out work by The MS founder who while he has been a massive tool is now with some of the other tech billionaires on the verge of getting rid of malaria. The Google founders donating the use of their personal jets to NASA for research and the huge amounts they have both put into education even if it has not worked out as well as they hoped thanks to unforeseen barriers. Question is what has Apple or their lorded founder done, build some services that are locked solely to their platform, fork a bunch of tech so that they contribute back comparatively very little given their dependence on it to OSS and buy a shiny boat/car lease deal. You are right that the other companies would charge for it too but as far as I can see they may actually care enough to give a little back rather than hording it like scrooge mcduck in a tower of gold.

Uninstall + clean does not always work, tried all sorts on one Windows 7 machine and never recovered it, would play some things and not others. If it is a safety thing you need to be careful to do it right. If you were to do it with some arduno gear and perhaps a wireless 800mhz, 2.4GHz or the like signal you would need a response code sent back from the office unit to show it had actually made it there. Safety wise I would be uncomfortable with a single form of communication so would opt for a wired signal path and a wireless one each with keep alive responses so you could see at each end if the device was up and running and either of its comms channels were compromised. I'd also have a watchdog timer and checks on the code so that it would recover from a crash along with a periodic manual check of the alarm output. I hope they already have security cameras in place if it is that dangerous?

With four hours a week don't touch the iPads unless they are full one to one and you have people pre-damaged by their implementation previously, they are a nightmare, just read any forum threads on here about them, take forever to get right and can be flaky. Learnpads would be the way to go with Android as they are easily managed and can do a bunch of the stuff without to many nightmares. Windows tablets will be the best for this kind of setup but budget and politics may prevent you from implementing them.
