We have local profiles and redirected mydocs folder. Pictures and video should redirect automatically on windows 7 when my documents are redirected. make sure you untick grant user exclusive rights to my documents. I think this setting is determined how the home folders where setup and certain permissions. Easiest way is to untick the setting.

The local default profile could be big depending on how you set the image up. If you pre-installed some apps then the default profile will grow, but this should not affect logon times drastically. If it were a server based profile then yes. Our default local profile is 26mb which is because I got so damned frustrated with deploying office 2007 I stuck it on the image.

We had a few problems with the default profile when first setting up win 7 through deployment. Same sort of slow response to logons. After some digging around we determined it was because we weren't using true in the unattend.xml file for the image. Which copies any modifications you do with the profile that you ran sysprep through, and sets up required security on the profile. It also applies to to anyone copying the default profile to a network share and using it for mandatory/superman profiles. This could be the problem. Never had to do anything that mac_shinobi says to do but I'm not saying it's wrong, I would just add the copyprofile command then see if that makes a difference first, before messing with SMB (as you are using local profiles it should not be an SMB issue) and authentication.

The 100mb partition is for bit locker, we did not intend using it so did win7 on one partition. The trick being when you install your reference image you delete all partitions and when it asks you to create partitions you click cancel, it then does not create that extra partition. Bitlocker sounds good but we went with server 2008 r2 standard and win 7 pro for clients so bitlocker is not an option, I guess the partitions are created on the off chance you are going to install win 7 enterprise. Like the sound of bitlocker though for laptop/data security.

Limiting Colour Printing To Students
jsnetman replied to napsburypark's topic in How do you do....it?
We do the two printer driver method, install IIS web printing and advertise the colour printer driver via a web page on the intranet. We set permissons on the actual IIS printer page by creating a single user in AD and setting NTFS permissions to the actual page. So for example pupils in the art dept go to the art colour printer on the intranet page and try to connect, it issues a username and password prompt, teacher either supplies it or does it themselves, if they supply the password to the whole group they change the password via a script after the lesson. It has drastically reduced colour printing here. One flaw in this setup is that any departmental username and password will connect to any colour printer, the pupils or staff don't know this and I aint telling them. The mono driver is deployed via AD automatically. -
Here we don't focus on removing everything in the start menu, sort of giving them a taste of what is potentially accessible without allowing locked down users to access them (apart from control panel that is). Which is all possible via GP. I can understand if you don't want users to see icons or start menu items that they won't have access to, but giving them a standard start menu is more like what they are used to at home and more intuitive. I have seen some desktop experiences in some schools I have visited and it looks nothing like a standard desktop. I would class this as counter intuitive.

You have transferred the roles but have you demoted the old server, and cleaned up the meta data information for it (although demoting it should clean the meta data out). If not just turning it off might be causing the problem. I do admit it sounds like a dns issue but if the old server still has active directory integrated dns this could be the issue, although this should also be replicated to your new servers as it's AD integrated. Did you set up DNS on the new servers as AD integrated or just standard zones ? Don't demote your old server until you find out the cause of the problem.

Well I fired up google news when I got home and was very disappointed by the lack of criticism, looks like they have not been as tough as one expected, and looks like they will be doing the cuts in a more devious manor. I guess we need wait a couple of years to see the full impact.

Show us a copy of your CV then and let us all share in your wealth and good fortune But seriously I applied to one of these CV companies, think it was on Monster. They ripped my CV apart and sort of pointed me in the right direction without any up front fee. I'm in the middle of re-writing it, so hopefully these job offers will come flooding. They were very expensive to do it for me, around £400 so I declined.

Presuming you have active directory, you can stop all exe's and specify which ones you want to allow, using software restriction policies.

I was told to remove my sat nav holder from the screen as it constitutes a fail.

If you have not done WDS before there is no way you will get it up and running in an hour, more like a week.

You need to be sent to a rehabilitation center for home networking enthusiasts

We use WDS but fog certainly sounds good. Can't see any reason not to use WDS as it does what we want, but good to hear there is a good free alternative.

There was a script posted here a while ago which we use, pulls the ram info and a lot more, called inventory.vbs.

Create a network installation point for Office 2010 You need to create an administrator install point first as the above link.

Those servers look remarkably like my old servers, one which is retired now and one still going as a print server (intel chassis ?). We had disk problems for a while indicating faulty disks turned out to be a circuit board behind the HD housing forgot what it is called but its some sort of drive/error reporting circuit board. Could be that but that would not explain why it was happening on the previous server, unless they both had the same fault. Did you test all those faulty disks on another machine ?

We went for the schools agreement plus, where you buy the licences outright for the term of use, which is as long as you want them. We did this for windows 7 and office 2007. Downside being you can't upgrade to latest versions like office 2010. But we normally keep an operatiing system at least 6 years so you get real savings that way.

Great, first assessment last Monday, had it all set up, eaxm OU setup ready to move the pupils in to lock them down and redirect mydocs to another location. Forgot to move them in for the controlled session a bit of a blunder on my part, but I suppose thats the weakness of this type of setup.

Why not means test it just about every other benefit is, could it not be linked to tax credits i.e anyone claiming tax credits or unemployed gets child benefit.
-
Not in my case, my wife is subject to no recourse to public funds so I claim it. But in normal circumstances yes. I still don't understand how a family on 80k gets it whereas a single earner above the threshold does not. I woulkd agree it should be scrapped for anyone over say 40k joint or single and paid out to the more needy. Why not means test it just about every other benefit is, could it not be linked toi tax credits i.e anyone claiming tax credits or unemployed gets child benefit.

My thougts are and MS recommend 2gig of RAM for win 7, 1 or gig will get them going but start running anything intensive on them and they will run slow. You might get way with 1.5 but I would test them in a classroom situation first, logon as a standard user and run a couple of heavy apps. You should have no problem with drivers, I'm installing 7 on 4 year old laptops and never had a major driver issue.

ACS:Law Boss: I Feel Defeated And Could Go Bankrupt.

Real shame that is, I'm now crying. -
Yes we use media coder, runs from a share off a server no need to deploy to stations, but as pointed out the latest version may have some nasties bundled with it. I installed media coder about 2 years ago and it was a going project on sourceforge. But if there is no support or they are not developing now you might want to try the alternatives mentioned here.
