If it's doing what you want it to do why upgrade, saying that we upgraded to 2008 and win 7 clients 2 years ago only because we were due an ugrade cycle. It does not do any more than 2008 really in an xp environment, but if you have win 7 then it is essential.

I'm still applying my old XP gpo's to win 7. But have the win 7 machine in an OU below the xp OU and applying a seperate policy to win 7 machines via loop back processing. Any policies that aren't relevant to win 7 don't apply and vice versa. We still have the odd old bit of kit still on XP and they both work in this type of setup.

My personal view is why do the old stuff, granted the vast majority are still systems with 2003 and xp and will be for a long time but, the skills you will learn on the MCTIP track will show you have highly tuned and transferable IT skills. Saying that I would still like to have MCSE under my belt. If your sytem is win 7 and server 08 then MCTIP is the way to go.

Ask them for more, or install an ISA server or something similar and allocate your own range.

Bibble-it.com is a good source for training videos and free, especially for the 70-680/685. I would also consider not doing the 685 if you are going to do the 686 as that is classed as the higher cert and includes both 680 and 685 content.

19 quid for a pizza, you won the lottery or something, or overpaid Our local pizza shop sells a 12" for £3.50 between 3pm and 8pm, not as nice as Domino pizza but they are not far short.

As suggested using group policy preferences is the easiest, but deploying it through a logon script should still work if you set logon scripts to run with administrator priviledges even though registry changes for users are disabled. If this is not the case you could still deploy it by computer startup script and and deploy the reg file to HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT portion of the registry which exists before a user logs on. That portion will be merged with the HKEY_CURRENT_USER when a user logs on.

Deleting the stubpath registry entries speeded up mine (they are not really needed), if they exist you get the preparing your desktop applet in the top left corner when logging on, get rid of the stubpath entries and it does not happen and speeds things up considerably.

Who uses what proxy server inside their network?

Sounds like the drive is formated to fat. You won't get NTFS permissions if it is.

Casio Projectors won't last the distance

Major plus for the LED type is install and forget, with 60+ normal projectors here in our school cleaning the filters is a bit of a bind, I suppose we will have to wait and see how the image quality spans out. I know one thing, on replacement I will be looking at LED only. -
Used admodify the other day to do exactly the same thing, you just put @domain.com. It then automatically appends the username.

How do you monitor critical system error domain wide ?
jsnetman replied to albertwt's topic in How do you do....it?
Server 2008 and win 7 clients you can configure event forwarding and event subscriptions. Basically this forwards any type of event to a central machine. But other than that I agree SCOM. Tried nagios and could not get to grips with it, but saying that I did not really try that hard to get it configured correctly.- 7 replies

If it's a school you are in I wouldn't be putting it on a dedicated box or VM, for the amount of traffic it will generate or use stick it on any server available.

GPO Proxy server settings (to not activate away from school0
jsnetman replied to klop's topic in Windows Server 2008
If you set up auto proxy either via dns or DHCP you don't get this problem as it's the same setting as is used on all home broadband. Chapter 26 - Using Automatic Configuration, Automatic Proxy, and Automatic Detection -
For programming its a case of locking yourself away and just learn it. No college/paid for course is going to do it without your effort, your effort being the key component. Don't waste your money, get some good books and self study. Should just say I am not a programmer, well apart from early stuff like programming in low level stuff with hex and binary, find a few good books and self study does the trick.

From my understanding of WSUS and group policy settings they are machine orientated rather than user specific. Have you specified the settings in machine group policy?

There are certain instances when it's not wise to have infrastructure and GC on the same DC, but for a school network with one domain you can safely do it. You should not do it when you have multiple domains. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc268210.aspx

If the money is not there to do it all at once, what is wrong with doing it gradually. Thats what we have done here, most stations are on win7 but about half the laptops are still on xp, either because the teachers don't bring them in for an upgrade or the laptop just won't take 7. It's far better to do it gradually so your not putting all your eggs into one basket so to speak. XP and win 7 will live happily next to each other albeit in different OU's.

It certainly is, I have seen references to faulty printer drivers, SMB, faulty nics/drivers, network cables, switch misconfiguration and general network design and a loads more to boot. Can't help feeling like I used a sledge hammer to crack a nut in my case.
