We have a full SonicWall NSA 5000 solution (firewall, content filtering, intrusion and gateway antivirus), ISA (on-site and at the LEA) and USB protection which monitors for virus’s and content that is not needed in the school but this did not do everything we wanted and have installed eSafe in stealth mode. Stealth mode allows us to monitor what is being accessed and guess what it works. We have caught and blocked many items which otherwise would have been allowed in by the other applications. We do not have to monitor it as the reports tell us what we need to know and act upon saving me a lot of time and it allows me to get on with other things and not have to worry about what staff and students are getting up to. The biggest problem is having staff ask us to allow more access to more content to questionable material which could offend some of the other staff and students as what is acceptable to some may not be acceptable to everybody else.

Stick with XP as vista and the document and settings vs users directory can cause issues.

How do you "measure" staff/dept efficiency?
smadison replied to GlennT's topic in How do you do....it?
If you use the excel sheet and no one changes the formating or formulas a copy and paste of other team members is all it takes to combine the list. PM me if you want. -

Or you could contact Ozzy (ICTNUT) and ask him about my little helpdesk as it will do the reporting for you. -

I use an excel sheet with time reported, responded to, correctted, etc.. this gives me a good matrix in case it is needed and staff know how to use excel. I also document if it is a staff training issue which helps identify staff that would benefit from additional training. PM me if you want a copy of the excel sheet. -
I have had training managers sign for all four trolleys we have and they are responsible as we can not be in four place at one time.

Do they run a lot of SIMS Reports on those systems as sometimes SIMS will change things to the documents and settings folder?

How about looking at ROBOCOPY . give me a PM if you want to know anything else but it works for us.

I ran into this before. Try using the speakers with a laptop with and without the power pack on. If you get feedback with the power pack plugged in and not when it is running off the laptop battery check the grounding on your speakers.

We have six VLANS controled by one HP core switch. All staff laptops have a static IP with the ACL allowing staff onto the admin network from the curriculum and it works a dream. Our VLANS are on subnet 255.255.248.0 with the IP's as below: Curriculum 192.168.8.X to 192.168.15 Admin 192.168.16.X to 192.168.23.X Telephony 192.168.24.X to 192.168.31.X CCTV 192.168.32.X to 192.168.39.X Cashless vending 192.168.40.X to 192.168.47.X Building management systems 192.168.48.X to 192.168.55.X ACL's can be added as a range or by single IP's. the links to some of the docs i use have already been listed. Good Luck

TS works well as we have it up and running well. FMS still an issue along with Nova 4 (i know but they still want to use it). If they do not close nova and log off TS the user will lock NOVA so they can not timetable staff for cover as this has been done before. Good luck

Creating Additional Mail Addresses for a User Mail service allows each user to have more than one mail address, called an alias. Every user has one mail address that’s formed from the short name of the user account. In addition, you can define more names for any user account by creating an alias file. Each additional name is an alternate mail address for the user at the same domain. These additional mail addresses aren’t additional accounts and don’t require separate quotas or passwords. Most often, alias files are used to map postmaster users to a real account and give a “[email protected]” mail address to a user with a short login account name. There are two methods for creating mail aliases: Mac OS X Server–style, and Postfixstyle. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Â Mac OS X Server–style aliases are easy to make and are listed with a user’s login name. You can easily see what alias refers to which user. The disadvantage of this is that mail service’s Sieve functionality doesn’t understand Mac OS X Server–style aliases and can’t filter mail based on the Mac OS X Server–style alias. Postfix-style aliases require command-line administration, and are less obvious to audit. However, the major benefit to using Postfix-style aliases is their compatibility with Sieve scripting. Only aliases generated Postfix-style can be acted upon by Sieve scripts. If you are using this feature with virtual mail hosting and are using Mac OS X v10.4.3 or later, you must enter a fully-qualified mail address (i.e. username@domain_name) in the location indicated in Workgroup Manager. To create a Mac OS X Server–style alias: 1 In Workgroup Manager, open the user account you want to work with, if it isn’t already open. To open the account, click the Accounts button, click the globe icon below the toolbar menu and open the directory domain where the account resides. Click the lock to be authenticated. Select the user in the user list. 2 Click the Basic tab. 3 Double-click under the last entry in the Short Names field. 4 Enter the alias. For example, if your domain is example.com and you want to give user name bob an alias of robert.fakeuser you should enter: robert.fakeuser If virtual hosting is enabled, enter the fully qualified mail address: [email protected] 5 Click Save. As a result, mail to [email protected] is sent to user bob, giving Bob two effective mail addresses, [email protected] and [email protected]. To create a Postfix-style alias: 1 Create the file /etc/postfix/aliases, if none exists. 2 For each alias, make a line in the file with the following format: alias:localaddress1,localaddress2,... For example, for your domain example.com, if you want to give user name bob”an alias of robert.fakeuser you enter: robert.fakeuser: bob This takes mail sent to your mail server for [email protected] and sends it to the real mail account, [email protected]. 3 Save your file changes. or go to Apple - Mac OS X Server - Resources and look at the admin manual.

advice needed re anytime anywhere access system
smadison replied to projector1's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Try Access 24. We have setup desktop level access for staff and students giving them access to network based software, home drives, shared folders, etc.. This will also allow for single install which can be accessed from schol or home (including SIMS for staff) Reply if you want more info. -
We have 4 trolleys with 25 laptops and a printer and the biggest problem is improper shutdowns as most laptops will not charge unless they are shutdown. I have set-up logon and log scripts which tell me when they are not shutdown properly which i identify to staff. Most staff act on this but a few still say they do not have enough time. But the best best thing is that the staff are responsible for the trolley and learning managers sign for the trolleys so teaching staff listen to thier line manager. It will bw a learning curve but staff can take ownership provided you support from the headteacher and leadership group. As far as the power issue goes, budget for spare power packs just make sure they are signed for or else they may take legs and walk away.

I do know Capita will not support Vista and most LA staff who support Sims will tell you the same but some people want Vista just because it is new; why not be a step ahead of the rest?
-
I have got SIMS working on Vista and discovered the best way is get the machine on the network then log on as the domain administrator and thewn run the SimsInst install. After the reboot log on as the network administrator again and connect to the connect.ini and log off. You can then log on using any account with permissions to SIMS and it should work for you. The issue is down to the c:\documents and settings with XP and before -vs- Vista's c:\user directories
