Outlook 2013 crashing - AFTER the fixed KB3097877 update installed
gshaw replied to burgemaster's topic in Office Software
@LeMarchand do your machines have KB2975838 installed? One test machine has had it installed thus far and seems to have helped. Still no sign of it on WSUS though. -

Is no one else experiencing this? Thread seems to have gone quiet on what I'd imagine would affect a pretty broad user base on here at least? -
Outlook 2013 crashing - AFTER the fixed KB3097877 update installed
gshaw replied to burgemaster's topic in Office Software
@burgemaster just checked logs on an affected machine; indeed 1003 is there before the crash (and seemingly at regular intervals throughout the day) The machine had KB3097877 and KB3101488, as per the post on the first page KB2975838 still isn't available in my WSUS list Installed KB2975838 manually and will see results tomorrow when the user returns. If that is the fix why it isn't available for automated deployment is just bizarre. -

Good point haha, couldn't see the wood for the trees there. Have found a machine near our office crashing regularly so will check it out -
Outlook 2013 crashing - AFTER the fixed KB3097877 update installed

OK so we're still getting crashes in Outlook and other Office products. Reading up suggests this list of failed update: Original failed update was KB3097877, original busted but re-released Microsoft surreptitiously reissues botched patch KB 3097877 for Windows 7 | InfoWorld There's another update listed as causing crashes KB3101488 and supposedly fixed by KB2975838 https://support.microsoft.com/EN-US/kb/2975838 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3101488 I'm going to check an affected machine to see which ones of this sorry bunch are installed and see if there's an overall fix state with them all applied. Anyone else had any joy as this is really impacting users now... -
We're in the same boat with Sophos, turned on a setting to block malicious websites recently and it's now drowning our DC's with DNS traffic so that'll have to be turned off. Cleanup is poor and the management console is 10 years out of date (and hasn't changed in all that time). However we may be stuck with it as the license renews in February and that's an awful time of year to change software on nearly 3000 machines

Yes you can stop them running but as far as I understand the Modern apps go through some sort of provisioning process for each new user profile on the machine. That's the cause of the slow login process and I remember reading a KB article starting it's by design. Therefore removing unwanted apps that have no need to be there would be of benefit. Also agree that the bugs with customisation are a real pain. MS seem to be going through a rough spell releasing numerous ropey updates at the moment. We want to roll it out more with tablets and laptops first but it feels like a consumer product work-in-progress right now rather than something trustworthy enough for business use.
-
Is this because they're included in the OS or the new deployment tools? The lack of working Start Menu customisations and pain of removing unwanted default apps are really poor from a business use perspective. Why would anyone want an Xbox or Candy Crush app on the Enterprise version of Windows by default?!
-
I stops the video but first login speed is awful. Took nearly a minute on a new Surface 3, hopeless compared to a couple of seconds on Windows 7. Waiting for people who have tried the LTSB to post their results but in theory it should speed them up.

Is this affecting Word for anyone on here? We had Outlook crashing last week but this week's issue seems to be Word freezing up randomly on users' machines -
@robjduk what's the logon time like for a user with a new profile? It's horrific with the standard Win10 Education image and most of that is "installing" the modern apps per user. Would be interested to hear if LTSB is better.

Why do they get so awkward for distributing software that's free? If they'd only make a half decent local update publishing server all this could be done automatically. Thinking about it the tech is already there with AUSST as well.

I'd have to check tbh, someone I know in a school is using JAMF Casper suite as another option

Saw the demo of this at Future Decoded the other day, really clever stuff -
Indeed, we looked at it for automatic guest provisioning and suchlike. The license quote was painful, consultancy costs to install even worse. That said after being quoted 2 days to customise a captive portal login page it did inspire me to build my own on our current controller (with responsive design) for the princely sum of £0
-
This is very much the problem with Aruba. To get the advanced management functionality you really need ClearPass, along with the cost of a new controller Aruba have come in at over half the cost of competitors to replace the whole setup (including APs). Can only hope the HP takeover will bring some price reductions to sit in line with the value-for-money ProCurve switch range.

Microsoft shrinks OneDrive storage for Office 365 and free users
gshaw replied to edutech4schools's topic in General Chat
In which case bye bye OneDrive, MS just set themselves right back to square one after doing so much good work recently. Ironically the new OneDrive for Business UI appeared on our O365 tenancy this week; rather than have that (well overdue) good news as the highlight MS has all this negative publicity instead, great job guys! The wider implication now is that MS can't be trusted to honour their terms for consumer or business products - that's much more damaging in the long run. When Google look trustworthy in comparison it says a lot about how this decision has come across. -
That's the one haha

The Australian Microsoft MVP is the best one... "wwwdotsupportdotme" Search on YouTube and be amazed how he winds up the scammer for nearly 45 minutes

We had one not so long ago as well. Wound them up for a while to the point where the "technician" accused us of being the scammers and that our main reception number wasn't real either. Quite a fun phone call that was

I think the email and FAQ are pretty clear that the Bloxx appliance is dead as a product offering. The reseller who was dealing with our renewal said it's no longer being sold as of 2nd November. Akamai might use some of the technology as a cloud service but not for a while at least. I also somehow doubt the pricing will be aimed at education when an offering is released.

Microsoft shrinks OneDrive storage for Office 365 and free users
gshaw replied to edutech4schools's topic in General Chat
The OneDrive feedback page has already doubled in number of votes overnight, as I suspected quite a lot of Office 365, Surface and Lumia users all going to drop their MS services as a result of the decision. Will be interesting to see MS response; will they stand firm or backtrack to try and dig themselves out of the hole they've created... Xbox One style? -
Aruba here, currently evaluating whether to stick with them as our controller is getting to EOL and we're going to need 802.11ac APs soon if we go down the Chromebook route. Not sure where the merger with HP will take the Aruba kit, hopefully to a lower price point as it does seem to be very expensive for what you get. If not Aruba then Extreme are our next port of call as our switches are from the same vendor and we can then use one management system to put policies across both wired and wireless networks. In response to the above used to have Ruckus at my last place; was very happy with it.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/servicesagreement/ Code of Conduct section 3b Bear in mind some of MS systems for detecting nudity etc. have been known to remove accounts without any comeback after acting on false positives. It's why I'd only ever use OneDrive as a backup location, never primary storage. Also as reference for earlier check out the comments on here http://m.windowscentral.com/microsoft-downgrades-free-onedrive-storage-5gb-discontinues-unlimited-storage-options Basically MS are going to succeed in alienating customers who chose their service (and in some cases devices) based on OneDrive storage offers. Effectively the message MS are giving is they don't value their long-term customers and seem quite happy to push them towards direct competitors... what a bizarre strategy (unless the end goal is to pull out of the consumer market entirely, which is what one of the writers in PC Pro predicted some years back)
