Do you not have to have a license for each VM OS ? I thought the "enterprise" limitation was just the number of VMs not to do with the licensing of each VM? £178 Ramesys education price for Datacentre. Could I have got it cheaper?

New DELL Server install... Do you guys install the "Dell Installation DVD" first or do a complete vanilla setup from the M$ os disk? We have 3 x SATA 150g in Raid3 - Do I create a 60gig partition for the OS and then leave the rest for storage? Or all one big partition?

Hi Matthew, Just off home, thanks for this. Our new server arrived this afternoon. I will give "YouTube" streaming a fair chance on our new server. Gutted.... Are these alternative solutions free? Seeing this video with an Axel TC on youtube playing iplayer flawlessly I thought it would be watchable/possible using a powerful computer .... Multi-Media on RDP Thin client - YouTube This really has put a spanner in the works!

Multimedia Redirection Improvements in Windows 7 and WS2008 R2 suggests that in WMP, even HD video will.... " the video content displayed on the screen will be seamless (as though it was rendered on the server)."

Could anyone please adivce me firstly If I should be getting smooth playback (eg. Eastenders - iPlayer) with a 32gig dual core server and connecting my with my win7 quad core PC? Im currently getting very jumpy playback which I know wil lead to teachers asking for there old semprons back!! Secondly If I do have the settings incorrect would someplease please advice me what to change the RDP-TCP properties and client connection settings should be set to please? Or any other settings missed? Many thanks in advance

Bare minimum installed, Server 2008 R2 SP1, added the TS role and also the licencing service. On the install i ticked both "Audio and video playback", then installed adobe flashplayer... thats it so far. I cant seem to find the RDP settings to change them on the server, e.g. Aero Experience etc. But in the RDP-TcP Properties i have set the Client Settings to 24bit Colour depth. When actually connecting, I have tried selecting all the Connections speed options and all the same. Should I be expecting smooth playback? Plextor - sorry to jump on your post, I will start a new thread now!

Ben - really jelous..... Anyhow, I was advised that these days having a pair of mirrored drives for the OS may not be any faster than having the OS on the same drives as the storage? Or maybe this was just in my case with Sata drives.? Im setting up a Hyper-V RDP system and would love to read how you are setting it all up now and again Currently with my test 2008 r2 TS VM, i have connected to it with my PC and played Eastender on iPlayer.. really jumpy and not really watchable. Should I be expecting perfect playback with a 1gig connection to the server from my PC?

A good way to collect your MACs is with LanView (If installed), goto "Known Workstations" and you can export a list of workstaion name and MAC Helped me when I was setting up WOL

Cheers Geoff, That was the main guide that I followed... I have just re-read and noticed that on one of the screenshots: He has "Update Assosiated Pointer (PTR) Record" ticked for his DNS records. Does everyone else have this enabled on each of there DNS records??

Might try rejoining to domain tomorrow. The weird thing is that all other network printers can be installed and work perfectly on this PC, just not this one. I really dont want to be reinstalling it, so much science software on it Sorry: XP Pro SP2 Thanks

Is no-one prepared to share their No-Refresh/Refresh-Interval/DNS Scavenging age/DHCP lease durations with me

Can anyone please help me with this one as ive not seen it before happen on just one computer... We have a network printer installed and shared on the network, it works for everyone else in the school on any other PC and it was also working on this computer before the holiday. Now when anyone logs into this computer and adds this shared printer they get "Access Denied, Unable to connect". All other network printers work. I have tried: Removed and re-added the printer as admin. Restarting the print service Rebooting machine, Removing the drivers (including following registry removal guides), when installed the drivers are installed again. Checking that the IP is correct Checking the shared permissions Checking that the machine can contact the printer via the webmin and also pinging it. all fine. Can anyone please suggest why this might be happinging or seen this before?

Can anyone please help. I thought we had DNS working perfectly, but after the 6 weeks holiday i have noticed that around 40% of the computer in DNS have the incorrect IP. I have followed several guides and noticed that our outdated timestamped DNS entries arent being scavenged. I have set scavenging in the 3 places suggested: The DNS server - "Automatic Scavenging of stale records" enabled and set to 7 days The Zone - "Scavenge Stale Resource records" enabled, No-Refresh interval set to 3 days. Refresh interval set to 3 days. DHCP has the Lease Duration set to 3 days. I have DNS records with the dates of May 2011. I have tried to tell DNS to scavenge records now but i get the 2052 error. I can only see one 2051 log of scavenging report from back in Jan 2011 and nothing has been touched since then.? Can anyone please advice their working dates and times or suggest a solution for me? Gone for: Dual Quad Core dell server with 32gig ram - £2600 8 x Axel Zero clients @157 - £1256 8 x 22" LG LCD Monitors @ 69.99 - £559.91 8 x TS cal @ £12 - £96 Total: £4511.91 It will currently run these 8 machines with Terminal Services, but next year posibly expand to 60 machines with an upgrade to 64gig RAM. All depending on how it goes.... Wish me luck.

We have 2 x Samsung ML-3310 printers on the network. Both are added to the print server and shared. When anyone prints to either of them they both get the error popup from the status monitor. "The Port is not connected. Check it" (See attached screenshot) Has anyone come across this and solved it maybe The printer still prints the jobs after a small delay? Thanks in advance

Hi, The room would be later inspected by the trust that awarded this money. If they saw no change I dont think i could understand virtualisation to 8x 50-80year olds! lol Also the computers are popping PSUs and motherboards each week, they really are on there way out!! Thanks

Incase you are interested, We had a total of 12 servers. 7x tower servers ready for retirement, 2x 1U Dells as the DCs and 3 new Dell 2U dual CPU 16GB rack mounted servers. All servers were running 2k3. We installed the 3 dells with windows 2008 R2 enterprise to be used as hosts for all the other servers. I installed MSVMM to help with the P2V conversions and then one by one over many months (during term time!) I converted the older servers one by one to virtual servers, 3 VMs on each host. The server rack in now empty and everything is running like a dream!. The VHDs for the VMs are stored locally on each of the hosts as we cannot afford a SAN. the average CPU use of each host rarely goes over 10%! With enterprise you are licensed for 4 VMs per host.I have had no trouble with the 7 VMs running server 2003 or any trouble with the NICs. We already had 2k8 licensed so it didnt cost a penny. We then purchased MSVMM as it made monitoring the VMs and Hosts a doddle. For a little extra we had DPM2010 and MSCCM included in a bundle licence, so the backup were sorted too! Good luck!

Thanks Andrew. By "Axel ZeroClients", would you be meaning the Axel AX3000 thin clients? These are very cheap now and would look neat on the back of a monitor. Would the Axels and a new server with 2k8 r2 as a dedicated Terminal Server really compare to a physical workstation or a VDI solution? Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the replies... you could buy a bog standard server, and use terminal services Terminal services we introduced years back for some of the admin team, the reason why I wanted a powerfull server as I would hope that it would be scalable and as we have 90 PCs that are reaching 5 years old and due for replacement, virtualised desktops with ultra thin clients could be a huge saving all round. Not to mention all the other benifits of virtualisation... Have a look at Kaviza from Citrix - dosn't use a SAN so it works a treat. Great thanks for this, will look into it tmrw. From their spec per 30x machines i would need a 8 core 32gig server. I would guess this is going to be around 3k

Hi all, We have been awarded a sum of money that "HAS" to be spent in a certain area within the school. This being a small room with 10 computers. We have been awarded 4-5k, so instead of replacing these 10 computers and having money left over that we cannot spend, i though about the possibility of stepping into virtualision of the OS`s. We currently have many of our servers virtualised using Hyper-V on 3 x Dell hosts. But we DONT have a SAN and cant see us buying one in the near future . We have an MD3000 SAS for the storage. My question is... Would it be possible to buy a new dell powerful rack server with lots of RAM for maybe 2-3k and use the remaining to buy 10 x monitor mounted thin clients or acer revo type computers. Am I dreaming here or could this be possible withing a small budget? Even though this is for such a small number of machines it would give us valuable experience and the possibility for expansion if it is a sucess? I would aim/hope to spec the server to be able to host 30-120 machines if possible? Is a SAN a nessesitly?

I do love my job and im happy to go to work every day, but this last year has been very challenging, the school has litterally come to a standstill, there is no money for new computers or equipment let alone embraising exciting new technologies. This summer we have had nothing to do. I have exhausted every cheap/free project i can think of (and others edugeek members) On one hand im happy that we have everything working perfectly and proud of the current IT in the school, but with everything working so well it brings boredom! Have any other schools reached the point when EVERYTHING is completed in their helpdesk on a dialy basis?
