Looks like I lost internet connection on our network. I'm certain that it's our domain controllers but I can't see why it has stopped working at 3am a week ago. I've been looking for the root of this problem and can not find it. Hoping an extra pair of eyes (you) may have a suggestion. Here's what I know My laptop pointing to the gateway and using our isp as a dns gets internet. So this is not an isp issue. Both domain controllers can ping eachother and from what I can tell, everything internally works fine. nslookup msn.com often times out.. then out of nowhere it returns just fine. firewall and filter have been taken out of the loop (I was really hoping one of them were causing the problem) Domain controllers have timeout errors on the forwarders - the ISP dns server ips. ISP confirmed they should be fine. No recent changes have been made. I used Joomla and Sharepoint (loved the LDAP integration) then the website was outsourced offsite for a few years. I'm looking to bring that back in house and would like to know what you guys use for your in house website server?

Sorry for the vague subject line, but I haven't been able to identify anything that shows why we aren't getting all of our email. I have a PDC and a BDC. Our email subdomain is mail.parkcountyre2.org and nslookup looks like it points to our server just fine. NAT is configured correctly or no email would make it to us. I did however change our ssl certificate last week, but even if I send an email who is offsite, when they reply they get a bounce back. But I am getting emails from other locations just fine. Any ideas on where to look are most welcome. Thanks guys.

To answer the "How do you do it...." part. Personally I don't believe their is a 'wrong' solution if the solution you chose works for your situation. My solution to a similar problem was to move away from Office and intranet data storage completely and go to Google Drive. We switched and it quickly became a hit for most of the students and staff. Google drive + Edmodo has been a wonderful combo for saving money on a few fronts while providing the perks of google docs like collaboration, access anywhere, seamless(ish) and more paperless. It also supports every device that has come on campus so far with BYOD being another hurdle. In fairness, we have run into issues with docs also, but the pros outweigh the cons in the long run and most of it has been the teachers mindset. "We need Office, and I'll never understand this techno interwebs stuff" are the two major hurdles. More info for you. Good luck!

Good idea on the Service and File/Print Sharing. Thank you kindly! I'm in this debacle due to time constraints and an issue with the image shot at each of the machine. I can manually update/ give names to them at a later time.

I'm setting up 70 thin clients and will be keeping them in a workgroup with all the same computer names, however they will be given unique static IPs. Can anyone see issues with all these machines being on the network (but not on the domain) with the same computer name? The function of these thin clients is to only act as a remote desktop connection client.

I use a Sophos Web Appliance as our filtering tool. Knowing the ip (or device name) helps me identify where to find the kid without having to first look up the user in the Student Information System to find what class they were in at what time etc.

All our student traffic goes through our filtering system. But when I remotely connect to the Terminal Server as a student and search for something inappropriate, the return is the server IP and not the student’s client machine. Any suggestions on how to solve this? Note: The proxy filter still does its job, but any return of bad behavior doesn’t show from the originated location, and that is very helpful.

Thanks in advace for any suggestions on a recommended way to solve this problem. I have a Remote Desktop Services server running. It is configured and works great when logging in with remote desktop connection. I now want to setup a student machine in one of the thick-client labs. I would like to configure the XP machine to be 100% passive, so the student has no idea they are using RDC. What would you recommend I use to solve this? Thanks again.

I'm prepairing a Win 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services (formerly known as TS) and I'm doing what I can to clean it up for the students when they log in using rdc. Here are some of the things I still need to clean up, but unsure how to hide them. Remove, hide the Server Manager tool icon from the Taskbar on the bottom left next to the 'start'. Remove, hide Windows Powershell tool icon from the Taskbar on the bottom left next to the 'start'. Remove, hide Administrative Tools Is there a GPO addon i should be downloading for more Group Policy options for this? Thanks in advance for any pointers!

I thought I setup a RDS server and setup client access correctly, but when I logged into the server with RDC as a client, I could still see the Server 2008 desktop, the admin tools ect. Is this normal, or am I missing a step to make it look like a windows client machine? When it is setup correctly, what can I expect to see from the client point of view that's differant from standard RDC?

From how I read it, your domain was replaced and the primary issue is the load times for users on XP machines now. If this is the case, I would be surprised to see a newly imaged XP machine freshly joined to the domain have long load times (besides the initial local profile creation). If this solves the issue, you then know it's the issue of the local machine and not your DC. Best of luck to you, I think we've all been in a mysterious situation like yours before.

Looks like there was another role that needed to be added. I forgot the name of the role, but after it's installed it's called Remote App Manager.

I'm making a test network to play with Remote Desktop Services using server 2008 r2. The intent is to find out all of the teacher and student applications that will not work using this thin client solution. I remember in Terminal services on server 2003, I had to do something special on the server for each program I wanted to allow the clients to have access to. Is this the case for Remote Desktop Services? If so, where do I go for this now?

First off, thanks for the replys guys. I was always under the impression that the DNS server would get DNS requests from the Gateway. This is where my external (ISP) DNS IPs are stored. Am I supposed to have them somewhere else on my DNS server?

I'm having issues with a few domains that I know of. Specifically connecting to wildblue.net. I have several teachers unable to connect to the site. I am able to on my computer and on the domain controller without a hitch. When I go to the client machines that are unable to connect and run an ipconfig /all, I see my domain controllers ip as primary dns on the client machines and nothing else. In fact, it looks solid and no different than mine. I've then run and ipconfig /flushdns , ipconfig /registerdns. I just received an email from somebody at wildblue.net saying that they haven't been able to receive any of our emails. The DNS listed on the NIC of the DC are Primary: 10.1.1.2 (my domain's dns) and nothing else. Any suggestions on where to look for what's causing this?

If this isn't a possible issue then please ignore. But all of your paths show \\servername ... if you are unable to establish a connection to the server by servername it may be a DNS issue at the root of the problem. ipconfig /flushdns then ipconfig /registerdns and try to ping the servername just to confirm this isn't the problem.

I have the High School computer lab shared with first graders. We have a password complexity suitable for middle and high school students. Out kinder and first grade teacher however complain that it's too complicated for the little kids. So I'm trying to find out how I can ignore the Pasword Complexity for just one user and then have them all share that account. Is this even possible, and if not, how do you address this issue?

I'm about to order a new server to support 70 clients. I'm clear on the CPU and Ram, but what I'm fuzzy about is how I should have the hard drives set up? We will be using SATA drives, and I'm wondering if putting them in any RAID will 'really' impact the performance (for better or worse) for the user.
