50" TV's and Pi3 running a simple chromium browser on startup here. We have Planet eStream as a media system here, so we can just go to the published webpage for the signage player we want, but any web content would suffice.

Much the same as the spec we are looking at, but 2 x 300GB 15K 12GB 2.5" SAS for OS and 6 x 2TB 7.2k 12GB 3.5" NLSAS, as this is a DR server, it will be doing DPM backups most of the time, and only have to actually run productions VM's in an emergency, so we thought NLSAS should be fine across the board with faster 15k for the OS, the SSD's look nice but expensive(unless they actually aren't, I didn't get a quote for them), if we were upgrading our production VM Cluster, then I would probably spec SSD.

We are about to order a new server Dell 730xd with around 12TB of raw space, 96GB RAM, dual Xeons etc, and have been thinking of how to carve it up. Usually I would keep 2 drives in a RAID 1 for OS and RAID 10 the others. We will be using 2016, so we also have the question, do we go RAID-1 NTFS as normal for the OS(ReFS can't be a boot volume) and then storage space the other disks with ReFS and to hell with traditional RAID or go the usual route. I have tested ReFS on my test ring for Hyper-V and the creation of big disks has gone from a long lunch break to literally seconds, and they say there are good speed boosts in overall running of Hyper-V over ReFS, plus no CHKDSK(woo hoo). So ReFS is definitely the file system of choice, just now have the RAID vs SS argument to have in my head! Software RAID has never been MS's forte! So I'm with the OP, is SS mature enough for production? Is ignoring years of RAID mentality and just going JBOD on the controller and using software a good thing? Any caveats or mines in the way? This is going to replace our 7 year old R710 DR Hyper-v server, so does nothing apart from backups 99.9999% of the time, until the worst happens and it has to handle our critical production VM's until the cluster/building/town/county/[insert DR scenario here] is fixed/rebuilt/replaced. We use KMS and log into VLSC when we need a MAK, which isn't often these days

Speaking of ICT Direct, I've just ordered one of their HP Z620 workstations, Xeon with a Quadro 4000 and 48GB of RAM, 120GB SSD and a 1TB HD, all for around 900(inc vat and delivery, can't remember exact price) I am going to run Server 2016 and run a windows 10 RemoteFX VM as my main desktop, and use the rest of the power for VM testing Apparently very quiet too, going to be epic

I have an Wyse thin client with an external 2TB HD running Debian and that's virtually silent apart from hard drive noises! and uses only a few watts to tens of watts(wall wart for the thin client and HDD)But you probably need more than that if your talking RAID!

The cost is a one-off for a year, or whatever is stated. Although the certs are proper 3 year ones and won't expire after the validation period. For 2, it may not be cost effective, but we have multiple sites and this saves us a fortune! Free Class-1 certs work fine for websites as well, basic protection, but should be enough, unless you are doing transactions or other stuff like that!

I will add for StartSSL, you can issue single SSL, SAN SSL or even wildcards, as many as you want for the domains you have validated. There is a small cost to have a cert revoked if you muck up but its pounds.

I use StartSSL, they run it opposite to most SSL cert companies. You basically pay once to get your organisation and yourself validated, lots of hoops, the price reflects what level of certs you want. I paid around £150 for Class 4(proper big org name in green in the address bar). Once you are validated, you can issue as many certs as you want for the validation period I've been using them for a few years no, and never had a problem. Thanks James

Excellent! It's amazing how big one file can grow! You should also look into why it got so big, and maybe sort out some log rotation with deletion of old logs after a set amount of time. Those 2 commands have saved my bacon a few times over the years. Glad that I could help. James

When I get massively expanding files I run the following command which searches for files over a certain size: find / -xdev -type f -size +1000M So that looks for all file in the whole file system that are over 1GB, so you could add /var/log instead of just / to search just the log directory, and you can change the 1000M to 10000M to find 10GB files. If you are filling up that fast, you might find a massive file straight away. Although this is only good if it is one file filling, won't be much good if hundreds and thousands of small files are spawning, so you could use du to give you the top ten biggest directories, if its one directory, you should get a triangle of nested directories pointing to the culprits storage: du -a /var | sort -n -r | head -n 10 If you need to drill down more, or show more, just change the 10 to give a bigger amount of results hope that helps, I use both of these, and must admit I found both through google ages ago! Evening fellow EduGeekers, As the circle of life goes one, when I was a lowly tech many moons ago starting out in the business, I was given the amazing job of asset labeling anything that moved. Now I have a tech of my very own, I want him to do the same. While we know what we have and who has it on forms spread around the place, I want a central database of assets and who has them or where they are. At the time I did it, I ordered some sequential numbers printed tags and set about sticking them to things, so considering that was 10 years ago now, where is the best place to get these ordered from? I need anti-tamper with our logo, short text(property of etc), a unique number and a barcode linked to that number. Probably 1000 of, as other depts will get wind and want to label their microscopes and each individual slide Gentlemen and ladies, suggestions please? Thanks James

The 'history' command is also your friend, it will list the last 1000 command line entries, so you may get an idea what the last admin was doing before the night of the long paint

I am on 2016 CB, Web access and GW, but host is 2012R2, when I create a collection and am asked for a template I select my new Gen2 W10 template and it complains that only Gen1 are accepted as templates, so I assume the whole lot need to be 2016 for Gen2 to be available. My host runs all our servers as well, so while it will be updated, it won't be for the time being, as our RDS is testing, while our servers are production, and I am not ready to bring 2016 into production quite yet. Ah, I got that error, but my host server is still 2012R2, so that may be why I can't have Gen2, as they say it is a feature in 2016. Might just be me with 2016 everything apart from my host being 2012R2

You still can't have Gen2 VM's I tried that when I got 2016 installed, the template can still only be a Gen1. I built a Win10 VM up in Gen2, tried to import it into a collection, and still same Gen1 only error
