  2. Can I ask what VLE you are moving to, and why you are leaving the Moodle platform? No vested interest, just curious as a Moodle user, as people tend to run towards Moodle than the other way round
  3. I find, it doesn't always clear the config on a port, but adds to it, or makes it ambiguous as to what something means, as they try and put it in real world speak! Live and learn!
  4. Excellent, just did a test phone. I went straight to the CLI, defaulted the port and did the second snippet you posted, and it works, as it should. need to remember anything that gui-fy's cisco kit never works and I should stick to the CLI! They weren't meant to be trunks, they were meant to be access, but as I said, I believed the GUI! Ta muchly!

Weird thing is that is what is in the running-config at the moment, and in the Cisco Network Assistant it is showing Static Access:Static Access: VLAN 1 for that port. and the phones on the desks are using the VLAN 1, my head hurts! Both startup-config and running-config show the snippet above, but the switch seems to be using the config shown in the assistant, which should mirror the running-config.   6. Evening all, As the title suggests, I have 2 types of IP phone, a Cisco 79xx and A.N.Other, mostly Grandstreams (as they have bluetooth integrated for our jabra headsets). We have 3750 Catalyst POE switches to run them all. The Cisco ones do a bit of CDP magic, tell the switch it is an IP phone, it then gets put on the Voice Vlan of 5, where it gets a DHCP address from the router, and they is happy. The other IP phones on the other hand just get what is programmed into the switch which is currently a standard Dynamic Auto in VLAN 1. I am now trying to get the other phones into the Voice VLAN 5, but whatever setting I give the port in the switch, 802.1q/static/etc pointing to 5, I get no access. I would assume static access and a setting of 5 should do it, but it doesn't! Anyone else had this b*ll ache, and have any tips? Thanks James

  9. Evening all, We are planning for our first DAG, using 2 Exchange 2016 on Server 2016 virtual machines, one on each host of our 2 node hyper-v cluster. I have been doing my planning, and from what I can work out, DAG's shouldn't be across a full cluster, BUT does this mean, I should configure them as normal not added to the cluster VM's on the 2 hosts or does it mean, I can't put them on the cluster at all? From my reading, the former should be fine, basically creating a little mini Exchange cluster alongside the main Hyper-V cluster. Thanks James Do ya like dags? (sorry couldn't resist it )
  10. What are you actually wanting to monitor? If it's just temperature, we have a Pi 3 with 2 temperature sensors(DS18B20 off the top of my head), one for ambient in the room temp and one in the air flow from the chiller, so we can calculate a differential and pre-empt when the chiller is not blowing cold air and hopefully get to the room and sort before it hits 30 degrees and things start to cook! Basically it has a round robin database(RRDTool) that polls the sensors on an interval, and then sends that data to Xively (an IoT platform that uses HTTP posts to log data), then triggers fire off emails if certain conditions are met("Get to the server room, you lazy IT monkey, it's over 23 degrees in there at the moment" type thing). Just needs power, as the 3 is wifi enabled. I would assume if you can get humidity and other sensors to go on the GPIO pins, it would also log what ever you wanted to where-ever you wanted as well.   11. the emails are mainly notifications to tell someone to do something, but it can automate within the flow too, it can export or convert documents, call other workflows, and you can add your own custom DLL for custom actions.

  13. We use a software called Therefore marketed by Canon, which used to be called ADOS, a document management system(now being branded as a information management system). Basically all paper documents are digitized and stored in a structure we can search. This also gives us a very robust workflow system where we can chuck in a document(say a Learner Progress Review form, but any document really)it will then kick off and send it off to everyone who needs it with a prompt email, the user then does what he/she needs and sends it on. We also put any relevant email/correspondence from or to students into the system. This means, we can search by student and see everything from initial application to forms for car parking, to general correspondence. Very powerful, but also not cheap, but we have been using it for 10 years and forms the core of our system. In terms of the workflow to use an example, we have one for new staff starters. HR upload a document showing name, centre, job title, date of start etc. I get an email saying New Starter, please create. I then create the user in AD/Exchange, and tick the box in the software to show I have done it, it then moves on to admin who add them to our MIS, then it goes to 2 or 3 staff who tick a box to say they have trained the user in key systems, it then comes back to me, to confirm they have a badge. It keeps sending emails until we update the index to show we have completed our tasks. Once all done, it goes back to HR with a completed flag. Hands off and makes our lives easier

  15. Without wanting to teach you to suck eggs, you have got receive to transmit the right way round? ie, have you tried swapping the plugs around? This is usually my fibre problem, snap aprt the patch ends, reverse them and presto!

We went from a NEC Aspire with ISDN to a FreePBX/Asterisk system, initially keeping the ISDN with an ISDN30 PCIe card in the server we used for the new PBX, to receive calls, and sip trunks to make calls. BT actually rang us to ask why we had stopped making calls, reverse bill shock methinks We then ordered our range of numbers to be transferred to SIP and cancel the ISDN30. We now have our 100MB leased line with a dedicated 1MB converged slice for the calls. this is done on the leased line managed router rather than on our own router, ie we have separate gateways for internet traffic and phone calls on our router. We buy second user Cisco 7941 phones for circa £25 each, really cost effective phone system, we now have over a hundred extensions. We even have the second line set to auto-answer, so we can use it for a lockdown announcement or paging(bit of scripting on the server, responds to a number being rung, the "pin", then the server checks for all active paging lines, and sends a prerecorded announcement to all those phone, really creepy hearing my voice coming out of 100 phone speakers simultaneously though!!)

Don't forget licensing for virtual hosts, Standard gives you 2 Windows Server VM's, as long as you don't use the host for anything other than Hyper-v(ie no other roles allowed) or it's 1 VM and the host. Datacenter is the one to go for as it gives you unlimited VM's on the host. Linux VM's on the other hand, go for your life, install as many as you want! Of course you can stack licences, so 2 standards give you 4 VM's and 3 - 6 VM's until the price point makes DC more viable.
  19. We have standard Papercut with pin codes and Ricoh MFP's, and set all queues to release only. At each printer is a Raspberry Pi touch screen and barcode scanner. Everyone has their pin encoded as a barcode on their badge, no manual entry. V effective and cheap at about £100 per copier for hardware plus the cost of a Papercut release station licence, so circa £200 per copier in all. Copying is by pin on the Ricoh screen. Release printing is the way forward If someone prints and wanders off and leaves their printing on top of the copier, and I am around, they will usually find it in the bin. They love me in the office!!

  21. 11.22.63 , yes that's the name, time travelling series with James Franco about a portal that takes the person back to a date in 1960, always the same date and time, you can stay as long as you want and you will age, anything you do will affect time, but when you return through the portal only 2 minutes have passed in the present, and if you pass through again, time is reset back to the same date and time in 1960. Oh and time fights back. Mostly centered on stopping the assassination of JFK hence the date in the title. I've seen the pilot and so far looks intriguing. Oh and Legion did my head in, until it stopped spinning and I thought about it, I quite like it!

I have been looking into automatic ways to add the right routes on the client, and have come across CMAK, but it says you have to have a separate 32bit and 64bit version, and 32bit can only be made on a 32bit server? Is this just old advice or does this not work on newer server systems, as there isn't a 32bit server anymore and hasn't been for many years! Thanks James
  23. No, had to clear the server and start again, back to single subnet working. Next time I will snapshot the server before I change any settings, keep forgetting! Still not sure why it won't route, although one thought occurs, how would the client know there are more subnets to route to? Should routing tables need to be adjusted on the remote client side? I did a tracert and it tried to run the subnet over the net at large rather than over the VPN. I do use split-tunneling though...I think I'm answering my own question here... Thanks James
  24. We transfer them to an Alumni licence via powershell linked to a flag on their account, this gives them the standard exchange online free service, and allows them to keep their address for alumni purposes

I keep toying with app-v as an alternative for those power users who have workstations where a vdi desktop wouldn't be appropriate, as we are at the crossroads of investing in client side or server side and maybe moving to a vdi scenario, to support our geographically diverse workforce better. but for the moment SCCM and the big booming voice "Turn them on, they will build" suits us fine. PXE enabled DP's at the remote centres and away!
