I did a deny all with the firewall rules and then only allowed what I wanted. Adding an allow on port 1863 for MSN on the IP range I use obviously Doing a deny all also solves the problem of anything new emerging and it not being blocked already.

As I once found out, it breaks lots of stuff. I find it's best to do it on server setup, not once it's been in production.

Not fantastic value for money but it wasn't me who wanted it, I was just made to set it up Oh and if anyone wants the PHP to pull entries out of MRBS i'll gladly dig it out! It's configurable so that the NTB will only display entries between a certain time. We have another "Type" setting in MRBS so any entries we don't want the NTB to display we set as "Hidden" they show up on MRBS but not the NTB display. Useful for adding comments to the day but keeping them hidden. It's not just for the NTB either, it's plain PHP so it could be used to integrate MRBS into your website/intranet etc.

It's exactly that, it runs Mandrake (not my personal fave). It's got a web interface on it which isn't the best, but you can hand craft the config via xml files on the box which is what I did.

In that case you dont really need the SPI services of the PIX firewall, can't you just make some nice ACL's to stop the traffic you don't want?

This isn't open source but we use Net Top Box from Onelan. It's a small linux box, some of the software they use on it is under the GNU licence so they may even have to release the source code, i don't know! I wrote some PHP to get it to grab the entries out of MRBS and show them on the screen, along with some RSS feeds, webcams and work done here (The black area's are movies which show up like that on the preview's i've used here).

In the past I've used JASC's (now Corel) Animation Shop, It's not free but many of you may already have it as it comes with Paint Shop Pro.

Damn, you beat me to it! Via group policy you can also set an EXE to be the screensaver if you rename it to .scr, i'm guessing you could use the shutdown.exe program, although there would be no way for the user to stop the pending shutdown once it's been started.

Yes, MS have a Screensaver called winexit.scr that can be applied via group policy, have a look here. HTH

It's got Powerchute Business 7.0.4 on it, which isn't the latest version but it's not old old, It's from 2005. Is it this version that's affected?

I'm throwing this question back open again! The server's still randomly freezing and I can't find anything wrong with it. Spent a good hour on the phone to a Dell tech and he couldn't see anything at all wrong with the hardware or software. We ran a full DSET report and submitted it to dell and their other tech's couldn't see anything. In the end they left asking me to reinstall powerchute and they closed the case, which was nice of them. The server itself doesn't "lock up" straight away, I can still see the desktop and open My Computer, as soon as i try to look at a share on the server then the desktop locks up. It freezes all the domain clients on the network, its just weird!

Ahah, is there no option to change the ssl port in the config anywhere?

Having not used Moodle I may be pointing you in the wrong direction but to make Moodle use a different port for SSL you'll need to modify your web server config. For Apache you'll need to change the Listen and VirtualHost values from 443 to the other port number. HTH

First time i've been called that, but then there's a first time for everything In that case you might want to go down the OS X Server route and use Workgroup Manager, its fairly easy and im pretty sure you can still authenticate from a Windows domain but apply restrictions to the users logging onto the mac's with it.

Or just create a user for the machine, go into Accounts, select the User, select Parental Controls, Select Finder & System and configure it so the kids can only run the apps you want them to. (instructions for 10.4.5, slightly different for 10.3) Make it so that the locked down user logs on automatically. We've had no problems with doing things that way.

Stupid stupid piece of software, I'm trying to let the kids go to http://www.mindbodysoul.gov.uk which is in the "Drugs/Non-medical" list. Drugs/Non-medical is denied on our system so i've made an allow list and added this site to it then added the allow list to the "Allow (Filtering Disabled)" category. I still can't get it to let the kids access it, I think thats because it's still set to deny any sites in Drugs/Non-medical, any ideas on how to get sites in a denied list to be allowed?

They said it's to be done in Powerpoint, think it's a bit much to assume everyone has it to be honest! I've covered all the major server rolls, included stuff like Network Management, storing DNS zones/configs in mySQL, think i've got it all covered

Unless you know of any open source hardware components then I'd assume it's software. Got most of it sorted now anyway

Applied for a job a few weeks back and I got a letter yesterday saying i've got an interview. No problems there. They would like me to "Produce a short presentation that outlines what open source server components are available for the linux operating system". No real problems there either, I just need some help in making it a little bit different. I can't stand boring powerpoints where people just read off the slide! I'm not the most imaginative person and I dont just want to do a presentation that lists a load of software and their features. Can anyone think of ways for me to spice it up a bit? The presentation only needs to be 5-10 minutes long so I suppose I really only need to cover the basics, Apache, Exim, mySQL etc.

I'm sure there can be a joke made out of that!
