Woot! Just got the data back from CBL this morning. Now i've got to go over and set up a new server and put the data back on it And rejoin all the clients to the domain and set up AV and all their other software... Diagnosis was a broken drive bearing and they gave a 20% educational discount.

Machines and servers have all had Symantec AV updates and are up to date with the WSUS server, mind there's not been any WSUS updates in a while.

Offline files have always been disabled for it and the "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" setting is set to enabled just like it has been for 3 years. Any other ideas?

Got an odd one here, we have a generic pupil logon that's tied down tighter than a tight thing. It's got a mandatory profile that's been working fine for at least 3 years now. I logged onto a machine this morning with pupil and it totally didn't pick up the profile, rebooted the machine and it did. It's done the same on a few other machines in different rooms too and i've got no idea why. No odd entries in the logs, DNS is fine etc. Anyone?

Direct to Dell, for stuff from Dell I don't see the point in resellers, Dell have always beaten quotes from resellers so I just go straight to them now!

We have 6 HP 2200's that have worked flawlessly for the last 4 years, we go through a shed load of printing as we open our rooms up to Adult Ed etc too. They've never broken down and they only problem I had was with one of the JetDirect cards, which HP acknolwedged as a known fault and replaced. We get cheap toner at £27 for a generic and £49 for a real HP. They've been replaced with HP 2420's (as far as I can tell they've changed the colour of them).

I've just specced this server up from Dell for someone: Intel 830 Dual Core 3.2Ghz - 2MB Cache, 800Mhz FSB 2Gb ECC RAM 2x1GB 3.5in Floppy Drive 3x160GB 7200RPM SATA - RAID 5 DVD-ROM Drive 200GB LTO2-LC Tape Drive + 5 Tapes APC 1500i UPS Tower case 3 Year NBD Support Keyboard, Mouse, Gigabit LAN and no monitor. Just over £2000 ex VAT, don't think that's too bad even if I do say so myself!

Are you've Mac and XP machines already on the same network? If so, just enable Windows file sharing on your mac: System Preferences > Sharing > Windows Sharing Then from the Windows PC you can access your mac user area via \\ipaddress\username

I've only seen this on the higher model lasers, our 2200's don't have it, but our 5500 does. Still should be able to snmp them both, might have a try on monday.

Only for them to rename it to notcommand.com then embed it into a word file? What windows needs is some sort of md5 matching so you can block programs that way.

Have you tried setting a preferred network? As long as the network you want the machine to connect to is at the top of the list it should connect to that one first. That should work, if it doesn't Alex's idea would be a good one to try, i'd say it would be more reliable too. Even think about replacing the AP's with the Linksys models with speedbooster for better throughput.

Very true, at very least command.com should be on the list of banned applications also. I know kids can just rename command.com before they add it to the word file, but this should stop all but the most determined of children. The other way round this, like what we do is run Windows XP x64 edition, command.com is a 16bit app that simply won't run no matter what you name it on 64bit systems. cmd.exe which is 32bit won't run whatever it is called as long as the group policy is set up.

Depends on how often the key changes, its worth noting it only took 10 minutes because it was a 64bit key, 128 does take a little longer.
