  1. Now where was it I read that fireproof data safes werent worth the money, most only handle 1-2 hours before they give up and melt.
  2. We've got Veritas 10 with Remote Agents to backup from other servers, Advanced Open File Option to... backup open files and Intelligent Disaster Recovery which rocks. We backup about 180GB in 4 hours to an SDLT320 drive with a tape for each day and we rotate the tapes each week. No problems at all, doesn't take too long to restore data and the one time I had to use the IDR stuff, it worked

    Server freezing

Think I'll try doing that after i've moved the RAM to a machine with an intel chipset and ran memtest on that. Cheers!

    Server freezing

I'll keep that in mind when I buy.... anything! Anyway, back to the problem. I don't think all 4 servers would have faulty RAM, I've not had any problems before. It's just one server that randomly breaks. My last option is to move the RAM from the server to a workstation with an intel chipset that supports ECC and run memtest on that to see if anything comes up!

    Anything you can suggest?

    Server freezing

    It's a ServerWorks® GC LE chipset, apparently!

    Server freezing

Hmm, it looks like it's a problem with Memtest not knowing the server chipsets, it's coming up with errors on all 4 of our 1750's, 2 of which were bought at different times. It can't detect the chipset and our servers use ECC RAM, that's why I think it's coming up with the errors.

    Server freezing

Mind, saying that, it's coming up with errors on another 1750 server that i'm not having problems with! Does Memtest give you false positives?

    Server freezing

Bingo, right i think i've found it! Memtest has come up with a shed load of errors, gonna get onto Dell now

    Server freezing

I don't let WSUS download drivers, not changed anything to do with Printers in ages either! I'm keeping an eye out for mem leaks, gonna take the server offline in a few minutes and kick it about a bit!

Updates are applies at 12PM, Monday to Friday, if any clients miss that slot, it retries for 2 hours, then waits till the next day. Yes, it is a print server, the spools are stored on a different drive to the OS.

    Replacement mouse

Yes, any USB mouse will be fine. Most mac apps are even written to make use of a right button, most apps will bring up context menus etc. Apple started supplying single button mice because they wanted the user experience to be simple with no "Is that a left click, or right click?" problem for new users.

    Server freezing

Yes, we run SAV Corporate on our DC, always have done and it's been fine for years! When it freezes, I can't do anything with the start bar, I can still move icons around the desktop, but trying to bring up the task manager took about 10 minutes. There's no major disk activity when it freezes. Not tried to remote into the machine when it goes, I will next time though! I'm keeping the task manager open for the next time it crashes to see if there's anything eating up memory etc. I say automatic updates, what i mean is WSUS I make sure WSUS only downloads OS and Application updates, never any drivers. I alos install the updates manually on the servers. I did a proper reboot this morning, then a couple of hours later it froze. There's no pattern to the problem either!

    Server freezing

I've got Symantec Antivirus 10 running on all clients and servers with automatic updates with scheduled virus scans. The gigabit interface on the server rarely rises above 3%!

The only error in the event log is the following from the 3rd: But then it doesn't actually list any errors Nice

    Server freezing

Hmm, I doubt it's overheating, the server's in an air conditioned room kept at around 18C. Nothing on the hardware side has been changed, the only things that have been installed are Windows Updates, i've got two other identical (hardware) servers that have the same updates installed and they're OK. I've run a few basic tests using Dells OpenManage and it's come up with nothing wrong on the hardware side. Gonne get the UBCD out at lunch time and give it a going over.

Already had that planned for lunch time, it's the only time I can take the server offline for a while! Anyone else?

    Server freezing

Got a really odd problem that's only started to happen in the last 2 weeks, our domain controller freezes and locks all the clients up on the network. I can still ping it, but can't access any shares on it. There's nothing at all in the error logs, I can't seem to track it down! Anyone seen anything like this before? The only way I can fix it is do a dirty power down and turn it back on. Our DNS is set up OK and there's no physical network problems. The server is a Dell Poweredge 1750 running Server 2003 Standard SP1, Dual Xeon 3.4 Ghz and 4GB RAM. It only serves as the domain controller and file server. DNS, DHCP etc are run on other machines.
  19. Kid: "My password isn't working" Me: "So you've forgotten it?" Kid: "No, my password just isn't working" Me: "Well the server just doesn't forget your password" Please tell me it's not just me who gets that? Anyone gone down any other routes? We were thinking at one point about getting fingerprint readers and enrolling kids on mass, they're less inclined to forget their fingers each day!
  20. Install your favourite linux distro that has exim, set it to do local delivery only, make a few users and send email that way?

    ups

Our sms supplier provides us with an email to sms gateway

    ups

Yes, I have all our core switches on UPS in case of power failure. This allows me to recieve an email/sms to tell me about the problem. We host websites/media for various people and I need to know if there's going to be any downtime!
  23. Was it "So you think you can teach?"
  24. Hmm, i know the series you mean as well, I just can't remember the name either! Frank Skinner and Sting used to be teachers... by the way.

    iMovie crashing

Sounds like a corrupt iMovie preferences file! For iMovie 3 the file is called "com.apple.iMovie3.plist", you need to delete it and reopen iMovie so it gets recreated. Make sure iMovie is closed, then goto your Home folder > Library > Preferences. Let me know if that fixes it. Version 3 is full of bugs, i'd be tempted to splash out on iLife '06 and OS X 10.4 which will only cost £80 for one Mac.
