XP Antivirus Malware - More convincing than the real thing!
tarquel replied to flyinghaggis's topic in General Chat
Like geoff... been seeing this one alot more quite recently. Not hard to fix though. Basic rule of thumb everyone [home users] should have... if you or another family member didnt knowingly install it, then its spyware of some sort hehe Nath. -
are the teacher and student AD groups different in some way? i.e. are teachers set up as Power Users [or something similar] and the Students arent? because with regards to accessing that, limited users arent allowed write access within the windows directory structure or something like that... same with Program Files i think. Just a thought anyhow, though dont know how you get around that unless u find the files that the program modifys on the fly etc, if indeed thats what happens. Cheers Nath.

500 concurrent users? all hitting the same server for their profile? Depending on the spec and setup, I think that might be your issue If you dont want to go the mand profile route, you could try load balancing your profiles a bit i.e. seperate them off onto diff servers by year etc., or get a little but fast NAS unit and put them on that etc. Just my 2p.. Nath
-
You can set it in GP to delete cached profiles on log off, thus not giving you a load of profiles on the C drive of the server. Its not just for manditory profiles... we run roaming profiles and choose this feature on some TS / citrix servers and disable it on others Cheers Nath

Just out of curiousness.... does everyone in the previous posts install from a Administrative Install share, or just from the CD's plonked on a share, or from a CD? hehe I slipstream the hotfixes also into the Administrative Install and seems to work, although some times, they appear in WU / MU still A restart before visiting MU or opening a Office app could well be it. Would be interesting to see whether those with the problem are installing it the same way to begin with. Nath.

I used to do the whole lot to tape overnight, wiping the tape and starting fresh... Even when i ran it overnight, it took forever hehe Sometimes still going the next morning when i got to work. Thankfully to NAS / Disk is sooo much quicker and robocopy mirroring is great for differential backing up Nath.

Surely if they silly enough to remove the "hard" shortcut [as i like to call them], then they perhaps dont want to do any work and should be expelled? Nath.

The trouble is that a student may not look for their peice of work until a few weeks later, then realise its been deleted / corrupted / etc, and then needs the backup... a mon-fri one that replaces itself the following mon-fri wont cut it. I know this. Virtually every backup i restored was from more than a week in the past. In some cases, they'd noticed it wasn't there, and then still decided to say nothing until another week later. So my motto... backup as much as you can, and have as many as you can. After all, external storage like USB HDD's are cheap as chips when it comes to peoples data - students or teachers or any member of staff really. If i were you i would go for as many backups as you feel comfortable having, as space isnt your issue with the current usage. If you need to implement another drive to compensate for usage then do so a bit nearer the time. Consult the logs of the backup of the sizes of the backups every few weeks. Hell, even if you have email them to yourself somehow to give you a "report" every week of the usage and space left on the HDD etc. I had daily over 4 weeks on a 0.5 / 1TB Terastation, along with a semi-working tape backup, and i was in the process of setting up a portable HDD system to replace the tapes. Restoring from a browsable disk/nas share, than from a tape is heaven hehe Just my 2p Nath

No offense to Michael but you'd need more than that. You'd likely need it to go further back than that. I used to get students [and staff ] come to me a few weeks after the event of it being lost, so you might want to think about having available a weekly "snapshot" that goes back 4 weeks, possibly a monthly one that goes back say 3 months or more, and a yearly one thats kept safely stored. Thats what I'd do, and indeed, what we do here [well... with it going further back i.e. monthly shots over 12 months etc] with the snapshot system on our NAS systems. Nath

Some of their products are terrible on domains. Its like Adobe dont understand security and the need for it lol Have you looked at this: Adobe Forums - PE4 workflow repository.cpp-190 error It might help. I wonder whether its trying to do something with the registry and naturally, a restricted user isnt able to edit the registry i guess. See if the above link helps... havent read through it as havent the time but thought the last post looked good Regards Nath.

robocopy is part of the Server 2003 Resources Kit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9d467a69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displaylang=en and probably some others. Shove the robocopy in your path and away you go Regards Nath.

Have you tried replacing the permissions on the install folder [and possibly Adobe Shared within "Common Files"] to Full Control to whatever Group these students who need to use it are in? If not, its worth a shot, and remember to replicate it recursively Nath.
-
Its what I use. Cant really go wrong with the mirror option, although the shadow copies thing i didnt realise. That would be handy so it will prevent certain files not copying across when they are "in use" then correct?
-
I've always found that if they dont choose to change their password if its required to be changed, it kicks them off again. Dont remember if it was a Group Policy that enforced it though, or whether thats a new feature [thats bound to be group policy controlable]. Good luck and let us know Nath.

Googlemad was on about upgrading by putting the CD into the machine while in Windows I dont think it performs the same processes as a "in-place repair" (i.e. boot CD and choose repair) does it? Tho I cant think of one time where i've used the setup of XP within a OS to upgrade from one OS to XP. Clean install is usually the best idea though. If you can get in through the administrative shares and take off any data you need, then i cant see why you'd want to install XP over the top of itself really (depending on your deployment method of course ]. Regards Nath.

@richard: Have you got some crappy orange router then? Seriously though, I dont get a problem with that on the PS3 - either when downloading new content or online gaming, my partner is happily whiring away on ebay/facebook/shopping sites without a problem. Its usually down to something wrong in the setup or "unfortunate" hardware Have seen a few reports about it, but otherwise, it seems to co-exist well. Depends on the broadband connection too of course... if your stuck on a 1M link then yes, I'd imagine it would affect it but so long as its a stable ADSL line, shouldnt really get too much of a problem. In peak usage times, i get about ~3M and when things are quieter late night or day times, i can usually get the full 8M if i'm lucky, but otherwise its about 6M. @Mr_M_Cox: Glad you found it Regards Nath.

another thumbs up for Virtual PC here. Is great in tamdem with RIS for deployment testing [not drivers obviously ]. And yes, if your machine is new enough to support Hardware Virtualisation, then turn that baby on Cheers. Nath.

While i cant say for WDS in legacy mode or how riprep applies, the way i did it was: - Get a unmodified XP Vol CD - Copy everything onto a local hard drive - Slipsteam the download SP3 into it - Copy this to somewhere on or accessable to your RIS server. (preferable to have it fully copied to a local disk on your RIS server so you know all the files copy correctly) - add it using risetup with a descriptive foldername i.e. WXPSP3 and carry on from there making it how you want it - depending what you use from here on that is, as there are alot of different process people use [too tired to list them hehe plus it may differ with WDS]. Think its why we are still using a 2003 SP1 setup for RIS Regards and hope it helps in some way. Nath
-
Alas, I dont use riprep, due to the method i use with RIS. Sorry... i know that isnt a help but we use RIS to install XP / 2003 automated along with applications needed for the machine automated too using some scripts. It does involve a fair bit of work, but provides a nice clean install thats exactly what you need I can point you in the direction if you are interested but alas I wish i knew more on riprep to know what to say on it. No idea whether it helps but are there any updated tools you may need for SP3? I know there is a new deployment tools for it, which you might want to look up. Good luck. Nath.

"or a GPO object that may work with 2003, I think it is designed for XP but it is highly likely that the registry keys in question are the same." Quite true. I had it running great on a 2003 Server Setup with XP clients. Thanks for reminding me of that... i might make use of it here

Seems like Adobe expect any enterprise / corp / large network to have SMS. Quite odd really that a company like Adobe dont see that not everyone has systems like SMS to deploy their products, especially in the case of Education or small / medium companies that may have many machines but cant justify the cost of SMS. Used the script in a computer startup script via GP at all Lithium? Regardless, any chance of posting the code of the script here for the people? Ta.

On the PC, go to the windows media sharing section [with the PS3 all connected and running] and look for the Unknown Device [PS3 will come up as something like this] and allow it access to everything If you want a hand, grab me on messenger later. Nath.
-
Yep. Used to see that too when a program is "not allowed" to run via policies applied via GP. Take a look in Event Viewer on the machine. Would expect it to say more there, or look in the registry under Run section for that user and local machine and see whats firing up. Cheers Nath.

I personally cant stand this feature, while of course it has its uses, is a very annoying feature as in many occasions, you get lag when doing stuff while the machine attempts to pick up the pace. Maybe its not true of all machines, but all the ones I've seen in the past do this, including my Intel P35 based machine at home [which i soon turned that feature off and lag-free running as a result ]. Maybe i multi-task alot or have that much running with fluctuating usages that i cause it myself, but still.... you dont buy a Jag to drive at 5mph most of the time do u? Just my 2p. Nath
-
Exactly! MS used to deem that as illegal licensing a few years back however You had to buy the volume license to go on each PC. Naturally we didnt. Only crazy people must have as it was purely cashing in, as each machine purchased must have had some capital going toward the XP license on it, and why pay yet again for what you already bought, just to help deployment? Very naughty MS.... glad they've changed all that. Nath.
