Am I one of the only ones who's set up a year's worth of weeks in Excel for our four rooms, with different colour-coding for timetabled and booked rooms? Shared read-only so that staff can see, and view rooms weeks ahead, even though we'll only accept bookings up until the half term. Monotonous and takes a while to set up each year, but once it's done, it's done....

No chance. Across the way here in Bucks, you rarely get techies for that salary bracket these days. Anything that has "assistant" and "manager" in it immediately propels it into the bracket above 'technician', thus commanding at least £18k (probably more) in the South (outside of London).

Wow, two whole extra days? My lot haven't even got around to the practice tests yet (that's next week)...

It is very, very tempting. Do we know if it's possible to do distance-learning for any of these? It's all very well the discounts being applied, but once I've taken into consideration the cost of petrol/train up there, plus accommodation, it doesn't work out any cheaper for me than learning locally. If there's a distance learning option with an online exam/test, then I would definitely consider it.

Do you have a proofreader for the site? I ask following ITWITCH's earlier comment on the mugs. It got me thinking - and I don't want to say this without sounding rude, but sometimes some of the announcements could do some proofreading first. I'm sure that myself or Sarah would be happy to run our eyes over things if you wanted things proof-read. PM me if you'd like to take me up on the offer! Zoe

Great, this is what I have to look forward to. My flat's only been up about 7 months in all, and I've only been in 3 months. We still have no road sign designating our street, TomTom doesn't know we exist, and Google Earth thinks my postcode's about a mile over the road, and where I do live is just a field! I hoped it'd be sorted quickly, but if I've got to wait at least 6 years for things to start appearing, I'd better get used to having to direct delivery drivers...

Hi Matt (another local!) I'm on 10.0 here so I don't know if I can be of much help... it appears that in 10 you can change / edit the Media Set properties that the tapes belong to. I can't remember 9 very well, but could you not create a new media set with a different overwrite date (or no overwrite date at all) and put the tapes into that? Of course, I am probably barking completely up the wrong tree here.... Zoe

Thanks! @Preston - I too use the IETab for firefox, but that displays the same problems... grrr @Michael - I've already done that with no successes... @mrtechsystems - I painstakingly went through all your suggestions (thanks for them!), but sadly, I'm still having the same problems :-( @Network Geezer: see below for my problems in trying another user account! Ahh, another problem I'm having: if I right-click My Comp and go for the Local Users and Groups in Computer Management, I get the following error message: "unable to access the computer . The error was: Library not registered" (I was attempting to create another user to try this out on to see if it's a corrupted profile) If I try and access User Accounts from the Control Panel, I get "Wrong number of arguments or invalid property assignment". At the end of the day it doesn't bother me too much, as I'm hoping to leave the school (and this is a school laptop) I'll just copy my stuff off, format it and give it back anyway...

This is a problem I have on my home laptop, and I'm stumped. Basically this came to light when trying to run Windows Updates (actually, I usually use Microsoft Update, but the two sites encounter the same problem). See screenshot below. Whenever I try and run updates, I get error 0x8DDD0004. Now I've been to the links provided and googled these, but I can't seem to find an answer. I've reinstalled Active X, I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE - still the same problems. Other sites don't work either, I can't remember off the top of my head, but it's just the Updates one that's annoying me - I don't use IE for anything but updates these days - Firefox and Opera cope admirably for me... Any ideas???

I've had that error message, but only on preinstalled machines, not our RIS'd ones. I've not had time to look into the whyfores and wherehows of it all though. It doesn't appear to affect the DPS at all from what I can see.

Half an hour ago: "you've got ants down by this wall outside your room - can you get some ant powder and get them sorted?" Clearly the holidays are for the lesser problems...

Quick Q, this is really for my clarification. As I understand it, if I set the default max recipients of a mail to, say, 5 then that affects everyone globally. If I then change the staff's default recipient levels to *not* be the default set on the server and set it to, say, 200, that will override the default, will it not? Just getting this clear in my head before I enable it... ta muchly :oops:

aye... i do. I started on the APS to check the current situ. Just moved to the room with the DPS machines - no flipping tests installed. All done now though. Seems to have been a problem because the blokey who was responsible for creating the tests didn't let me know when they were done, and there's no auto-update option on the DPS, is there?? Anyway, installed, and sorted. Thanks (again!) for your help.

OK, I've done some digging (now my notes have been returned to me). If I go into 'manage tests', and choose the test that the teacher was trying to run earlier, the attached file is what I see when I hit 'view pupil test status'. As you can see, the top student's test was supposed to run at 12.15 today. It was sat awaiting login. The second student's test is set for another time. Does this mean then that I was right and that the tests haven't been installed on the relevant machines?

"the test thingy" you mean the DPS on the individual machines, or onto the APS server itself? Test manager - will my elevated standard admin login do it? Sorry for daft Qs- this is what happens when the handover consists of "there's the notes and all you need to do is to install this software onto every machine"...

Fanbloomin'tastic. Oh well, if the thief of the notes returns them today, I'll log into the APS and have a look. Or I might just leave it another week and a half and tell the NM that it's imperative that he fixes it before the students return :-D

I suspect that it's the allocation of test packages to workstations. Thing is, I've installed the DPS, NM did the APS and the Business/ICT bod here has done the rest (student data population, etc). Which one of us should've installed/allocated the test packages? (please let it not be me... :-D)

OK, DPS installed on clients, backend all installed, APS connection fine. Except - when students log onto the DPS, they get the message that there are no tests installed on the machine. What haven't I done?

Remember folks: I'm a mere IT technician (sorry, administrator). I have no clout in this place. We're now at 29degrees. I know it'll get hotter (yesterday we hit 30), and I've spoken to my line manager and requested efficient air conditioning - even been as far as to get proper quotations, but it's been refused. Ah well, it's not my problem, being a "lowly" technician, is it?? At least I can say "told you so" ;-)

Sorry, the forced update change was the update of the Offline Global Address List. Usually all other changes take 15mins. It *appears* to be sorted now. Alright, our students can access the GAL again, but if it's between that and no Outlook for staff, they can find another way around it when I'm not here ;-) Looking at the other problems we had (printing not working), I thought that RPC errors might be the cause - although nothing in the event log on the machine. I also wonder if it could be something to do with the fact that it's 27degrees in here at the moment and getting warmer?

That's what I thought - I've changed all permissions back and am forcing an update at 10am this morning. I just wondered whether any of our other Exchange users on here might be able to help....
