I've got one HP 1320n which is reporting 'offline'. Can connect to the IP through my web browser Can ping the IP of the printer. Have also verified the IP settings, DNS etc - all in order. Just can't get it out of offline mode.. grrr! Have been to the printer in question - no activity on network socket on machine (well, one green light, no amber). So - checked the patch panel to the wall socket (just in case... start at the top!), then back to the wall socket, all OK. Changed the leads over with another known working one - fine. Can still ping the printer and browse to it. Yet it will not shift from offline mode. What have I missed that's blindingly obvious?

Any chance of a 'Printers' forum rather than me trying to decide whether to post under 'Windaz' or 'Netwerx'? Ta muchly :-)

It's not a macros issue is it? IIRC in my old place we once had problems with a report and it turned out that macros / security was the issue... lowered the security level and it appeared to run. Quite why an administrator wouldn't be able to run it, unless your macro security is high as well, I don't know...

See, now I agree with all the views here - I personally think that two logins is a damn fine idea... although the kids here don't take their passwords seriously at all and allow them to be used left right and centre... NM has now got onto the LEA / our provider and has put the onus on them to start blocking by keyword as well (a block of the keyword 'proxy' would solve 98% of my problems here!) Now, if I can get the time to play, play with Censornet / IPCop / etc, I will... .... if the NM didn't lump the KS3 testing on me, that is... (his idea of a handover was to show me the installation book and install it on one workstation in the room behind us...)

There's also this in the national press: Daily Mirror Local Press here... The caveat here is that if she goes, I return :-D

I receive the call from GCap media earlier this week, and then my old boss at my old school has just called me, asking me if I'd be interested in going back. I left under no acrimonious circumstances, although I left because of the old head at the school - those of you who read the national press may have seen her mentioned as she's attracted a lot of attention for punching her deputy in a staff meeting. As a result, it's pretty certain that she'll be off... My replacement hasn't turned out to be what they hoped, and his minor's just handed in his notice... so my old NM has just phoned me and said: "if I can arrange the salary.. etc, would you come back and be my deputy?" Too right I would... back to Citrix, linux and nicely-managed servers... and video streaming amongst other toys...

They being the NM here? He's just said to me: "I'm not having them login twice, most of them can't manage it the first time around. Mind you, in the same breath he imparted this piece of wisdom on me: "IT support is about doing as little as possible as the systems should run themselves" (that explains his constant Googling over the past month planning for his holiday / searching for Liverpool related items / telling me how to make a lightsabre / buying Oakley sunglasses... etc etc) Those instructions would be useful, I'll PM you my email addy

I'm conscious that a lot of money will have gone to waste if I bypass the ISA server... so, I'm going to try and set up Censornet in the next month (he's away from Friday, hurrah!) to prove that my solution works and is free, whereas he got on the phone to his suppliers yesterday, demanding the 'best solution' (and then went cap in hand to the head and told him it'd cost £4k!) As an aside, I got in touch with Burstek, and they quoted me $4500 US (2600 GBP) for 250 workstations... :-o Still, one awaits the day when it's mine (all mine!) and I can do as I please :-D

I'll start a new topic on this as all your thoughts are welcomed. We have ISA 2004. I have been told by my NM that "under no circumstances are we getting rid of it". So, in lieu of my need to block by keyword and not just by URL, suggestions are welcomed for products that will work with ISA, but cost as little as possible. Censornet is the recommendation that's stood out so far (currently pulling that down and hope to play in the next week or so)...

We use it here... haven't had any problems with it and it runs on a server under the librarian's desk - the fact that I've only seen it once might tell you how problem-free it's been for us in the last 9mths. I think we have integrated our cashless catering with the library cards as well, and were looking at implementing a room booking system with it, but the latter's not been thought about for a good 6mths or so!

OK, I see... but yes, the idea that if I moved to Squid + Dansguardian, it would render the ISA pointless. I didn't choose the ISA, everything that I work with was implemented before I arrived here. Basically, I need something that allows me to filter web content but will also be happy alongside ISA... but doesn't cost the earth. I know, I'm asking too much..... As an afterthought - can I implement Smoothwall in front of the ISA, or would that take some work, and time (I don't have)?

Other than Surf Control, is there anything else that I can look at that's cheap / free and will work alongside ISA Server 2004? We use ISA as a basic ip / URL blocking, but it isn't nice. I want something that will sit happily with ISA (I looked at squidcache and Dansguardian but they seem to do the firewall thing as well) - is Dansguardian easy to configure with ISA, or should I look to something that costs but is a plugin (like Surfcontrol)?? I'm no ISA whizz, but I'd like to be :-D

I think this can be set higher, but I can't remember off the top of my head. Under the individual user in AD, if you browse to user properties, exchange advanced, and then mailbox rights, you'll see the permissions granted. Make sure that the "everyone" option doesn't have full mailbox access rights. If I can find where that lives above (someone else on here may get here before me, mind), then I'll repost.

:oops: Far too kind!!! Maybe the fact that I'm female and under 30 might've been the reason that I had two schools fighting over me halfway through last year! Nothing to do with my (minimal) technical expertise... oh no Eek, sorry SK!

Go on, I dare you. I think it'd be nice to put faces to names for those who owe people a pint or two... at least you'd know who to confront in the pub! I've started the ball rolling by setting my own gallery area up and sticking an old mugshot of me in. Anyone else daring enough? (or does this contravene the idea of a forum whereby we are all faceless people hiding behind the keyboard... so our relevant SMTs and LEAs can't haul us over the coals?)

I'll be following this thread too, as I'm very interested to see what people's schools will pay for to put them through. I have a degree, but in English (!)... wormed my way into IT thanks to HSBC's graduate scheme, even though it was Unix-project management! Desperately seeking ways to prove my worth here, so I'm going to look at courses too, only problem is that I have no money (personally) to spend on them, so will have to hope that the school offers to help out.
