From my recent experience, three things to remember: 1) be honest 2) smile (not too much - we don't want you looking like a loon) 3) keep the eye contact thing going (for goodness' sake - don't wink!) Also, I read that writing a 'thank you' letter afterwards, thanking the interviewer(s) for inviting you and wishing them well in their search is supposed to look polite and professional. Edugeek's slow, but better for me than it was, other sites are improving My personal site hosting bods are still not back online (no giraffeonastick, boo!); any more downtime and they'll be in contradiction of their 99.9% uptime claims.. There are bits of this site (like the Coppermine stats) that I never take any notice of. What about a poll Russ to work out which areas are useful to people and which aren't?

Is anyone else finding things really slow this morning? My hosting service is down, Edugeek's crawling, and even the BBC are struggling, yet our provider doesn't report any problems at their end... Is anyone else out of my little MK area struggling?

Guess who has "lost" the SQL password for SIMS (on our system: user = sa)? Guess who swears that he told me it, and swears that I've written it down (if I had - I would've made an electronic copy or emailed it to him, and I haven't). Guess who is having a paddy in the office right now and pointing the finger at me... ... and guess who is trying to find it and calm him down? *sigh* Is he stuffed if he's really forgotten it? Can it be retrieved?

OK guys, I'm struggling a bit here and wondered if you can help. As part of the installation, the QCA seems to create a username that is only referenced on my server as "./tomcat" Does that mean that it's a local user / service? I'm putting stop/start service scripts in place to try and stop the memory leak problems that I have, but the tomcat service starts with the above username, and needs a password. How the heck would I manage to work out what that password is?

Me too today... it's one of those days...

Just an update on this, this morning I've had the same problem (it seems to be a problem that occurs every 48hrs), and the process tomcat5.exe, which is an Apache Java Web service (or something) appears to be the problem. We're running IIS on that server (and Print Manager Plus), so I assume it's needed. Anyone else heard of a similar problem before?

chall, we've got one of those standalone machines in the cupboard at the moment, but it's useless. On top of that, it only directs the air wherever you point it, whereas the aircon I've experienced in offices before have fans to assist in circulation. The standalones just aren't up to the job. Ours also has a habit of leaking when moved...... not good! Professional installers can advise according to the roomsize and equipment needed to cool. Do you have access to the roof from where you are? Aircon will sit on the roof (and that keeps it away from vandals too). SteveT - I know how you feel! In my last school they had two aircon units on the wall cooling the entire room - us included! Whilst the IT staff would run in and stand under the units, I'd be sat there with a cardigan on as it'd be 19-20c in there and positively cool, despite the 30+ temps we had around this time last year! I too got funny looks (but maybe that was just for being me...!)

Look in your yellow pages for local air conditioning fitters - who will provide a free, no obligation quote for your cupboard. With air conditioning, you'll have to have an outlet drilled through the wall but that'll be covered by the installation. As an example, our 9x3 cupboard with 7 HP Proliants (in varying forms) and switches aplenty, plus loads more junk [sorry, equipment] was assessed by a firm local to us, and they quoted £1600 all in. Other than that, ask about the possibility of moving to another office, after much hassle (and the threat of pulling my union in as the server room broke about 6 health and saftey regulations for the workplace), suddenly we were found a new room... complete with window and away from the servers. Magic!

Believe it or not, I've found spyware sat in the root of the C:\ drive in various exe forms... not sure it'll help you. Have you got your Sys Restore turned back on? Does it still pop up if you turn sys restore off? (I'm sure you've looked at that... but just thought I'd check)

Same here - I've just been around the rooms wiggling the mouse and hitting the power button. (SP2 here too) I wonder if there there is a way around that?

Mine's set via the power settings under the screensaver options - when logged on as Admin on the network on each machine, I've set them all to power down when hitting the power button (none of this nasty standby business thankyouverymuch), but I haven't found anything yet that allows you to set this in the group policy - I think it's a local thing.

... where did you get them from, how many did you buy and what did they cost??? TIA

I'm running the tools mentioned above, but the results make little sense to me... It looks like nothing's leaking memory at the moment... (which would make sense - things are fine at the mo) I guess I could monitor the Task Manager and look at the paged and nonpaged memory as well to see whether or not anything's ramped up really high by the end of the day...

I know... but this place seems to refuse to pay for the logical purchases, but will happily while away cash on pointless tosh that'll end up costing even more money in the long run (like iMate K-Jam phones on £35/mth Vodafone contracts... x 11... all out of the IT Budget..... tsk tsk)

@ Ben That's my next shot - to try PMP. We're running v5 and won't pay for the v6 upgrade, so I expect that this could be one of the problems........

@ ZH: thanks - I've just read through that. We run Sophos not Norton here, but am looking at the memtriage program that's mentioned in that thread.

Just installed the support tools on the server and am running poolmon now. Problem I have is that it's usually overnight that these things happen, so it'll be very hard to track down. Have also increased paging size as stab in the dark shot at providing extra resources - not sure that this will make much, if any, difference, mind.

Hmm, allegedly it's enabled by default in 2003, but I don't seem to be able to see the option to open the console... Server 2k3 disk time, methinks.
