Our 2003 Server "Fileserver" - which runs nothing apart from Print Manager Plus, hosts all our files and has disk quotas - has randomly crashed about 5 times this week so far. The error message in the event manager is: ID 2019 - "The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty." Now, I've already increased the paging space once, but perhaps it isn't enough. Googling only brings up stories of memory leaks and specific software - none of which we have installed, and seems to make reference to Win 2k rather than 2003. Any ideas... at the moment, only rebooting the fileserver seems to solve the problem. I could - theoretically - schedule a reboot every evening, but I shouldn't have to, and don't want to do that... using Xcopy on the command line... Do an xcopy /? for all the options - there's loads of flags you can add, but the most important one in this case is /O (copies file ownership and ACL information)

Seriously, 6th formers are great for the small and repetitive tasks - we use them here as part of a curriculum assistance programme that the school runs - they had to do X number of hours a week assisting a business - and a couple chose to help us out. However we give them no access to any of our servers, and they aren't even allowed to change passwords, setup users. They serve the purpose to take away the strain of the toner cartridge/mouse/keyboard swaps that come in every day, allowing us to concentrate on the development side of things. At the backbone of every school IT network there should at least be a Network Manager who is there to drive the development, organise purchasing, etc etc. [or in my case - the Network Manager says what he'd like to do and I'm expected to put it into practice. Bitter, moi?!! ]

Thanks for your thoughts, I've gone back to the Assistant Head who's dealing with this with a very succinct and formal-sounding reply, that basically says to her: "tell this woman that we can't police it, won't police it and couldn't even if we wanted to - and she needs to leave it with the police" Bit extreme, mind, informing the police. If that'd happened to me, my parents would've told me to stop looking at the site and ignore it anyway ;-)

The messages I get asked to deal with... (names and address masked for obvious reasons) "Mrs P contacted me this morning, having spoken to the police. She has a report number issued by the police. JP was on MSN last night talking to a friend who advised her that a personal message had been put on a website in her name. The site name is Wikipaedia The message which was somehow posted on the front page of this website read: JP has long blonde hair and is 100% gay and lives at XX Street Lane. Mrs P advises that the message has now been removed. Apparently yesterday JP’ s class were told to research string Instruments as part of a Music research project. JP went on Google, typed in ‘string instruments’ and a whole list of different sites came up. She went on Wikipaedia and found the message on the front page. Mrs P has been on the history link to the site and found the timing of the message as 3.55 on 12/06/06. The IP address is 86 136 43 197. Mrs P feels this message was put on the site by one of our pupils." - - - - - Now, I'm a bit dubious here. Wiki wouldn't have it on its frontpage - would it? Secondly - Mrs P clearly thinks that she knows something about computers by telling me the IP address - or can you look up the IP of posters on Wiki? Is it possible that she's reported her own IP to me? Our teaching staff are looking to me for suggestions and resolution here. Do I: a) offer to ban Wikipaedia full stop for the school, and thus ban a whole host of some very useful information? b) answer that we have no control of who posts what and when, and that the IP address was not from this school (our IP addesses externally start 194.), certainly not at 3.55pm c) refuse to ban Wikipaedia, explain that the IP was not from our school and therefore we have no control over who posts what and when outside the school. Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Does anyone know where I can source a load of freebie posters to decorate our room? (for that read 'cover up the manky walls) I've tried Googling but to no avail - has anyone sourced any recently?

But I've been told that I shouldn't allow students into classrooms without a teacher around, as if anything does go wrong I can't be liable for their actions. Hmm, guess that might just be liability rather than insurance then...

I wondered about doing something similar in our school, but was put off by Health and Safety measures - I personally am not insured nor allowed to be responsible for students and there would have to be a teacher present. Also, seeing as our 6th form 'helper' (kind of like community assistance for 6thformers) blew up a power supply when he was on his own in a room the other week, I'd be very nervous about letting kids get into machines in a 'workshop'. I don't think I'd cover 'faulty machines from home' because the last thing you want would be parents demanding you recover data from a machine that 'worked before darling Johnny brought it in here'... Maybe I'm too cautious, I'll be interested to see what others say...

Actually, I don't think they are *that* mad. This would be perfect in many schools where space is at a premium... the thing could be unfolded and used for half of the lesson, then folded up and stacked away to promote discussion. It would turn any IT room into a multi-function classroom. Alright, it's ugly as sin, but it looks like a damn fine idea as a prototype to me....

As I'm about to give my school laptop up, I'm looking to buy as high a spec for as cheap as possible. I think I'm gonna go with EuroPC, get one of their Dell return/refurbs with a 3yr Warranty... if nothing else, at least I've got 3yrs peace of mind...

Anyone got any spare? Our OEM fans came just like that - no screws, nothing! I thought they might've at least had some screws... Anyway, my little jar of all fixing things has nothing that'll do the job - has anyone got any spare screws that'll fix 9cm fans into a case? Can't say I ever really got on with WinAmp. I know iTunes is bloated (and that's an understatement), but for media, I like things I can just fire up and leave going... WMP11 seems to have taken on a very iTunes-esque look, with the playlist/folder arrangement on the left... clearly they've seen that Apple's got the winning formula and are following it.

From here. Although I am an iTunes fan by default (so shoot me), I figured that, in the interest of future products, I should give it a go. Just installing now...

Tee hee! Well of course I will update my blog, it may change it's title somewhat but I'm sure there are as many numpties in the FCO as there are in schools(!). I'm sure the NM will plague me like a bad smell for the first few months that I'm gone... I expect a phonecall at least every day........ It is satisfying to know that I'll be getting out... problem I have now is that the security clearance could take a few months... so I'll be around for that bit longer. Well CM786 I'd agree with you that his failings point to his choice of football team, but then I'm just as bad (we have had some arguments over the year, I can tell you), what with being a Gooner 'n all that *runs & hides*

They have a site just outside MK in the middle of the countryside as well as their large presence in London. Tis very much like my days at HSBC where we worked in tellytubbyland [Google Earth S75 3DJ - you can't see it very well, but there are large green pipes sticking up out of the ground and there were rabbits on the landscaped grass!]. Fortunately for me, it's very close to where I live and means that I will be able to get there within 20 minutes of a morning. I shall become an expert at dodging pheasants on the backroads though!
