Yes, you can order from Apple with no problems. Randomly, they do call people to check that they're working at the educational establishment. The official line is: "a student with a valid student card or a teacher, lecturer, tutor or other supervisor of students at a UK education establishment" Well, what's to say that you don't supervise students in assisting them with IT? I had my order sent to the school just to ram the point home...!!!

Also, its maps are at least three years out of date, the same as Google Earth's pictures are for Milton Keynes: Google Earth still haven't updated where I live. I don't mind, as it's only been in place for a year. But, if you look at MK10 9LD, which is near where my sister lives, it's just a field. There's been houses there for 3 years (it's three years next month since she moved in), so I know that my local map is at least three years out of date :-D

As the title says really... I have one Exchange 2003 user who, through Outlook, isn't able to access her Contacts list. Also, (this is a very namby pampy explanation) when I send an email, I can write the person's name, and their address automatically resolves after 10 seconds or so. This doesn't happen with her. Also - see attached file. I looked at her Contact list, and in the Properties, she doesn't have the option to 'view Contacts as an email address book', whereas I have. It's completely greyed out. Now I'm sure it's a permissions thing - but I don't know what permissions, and where! Does anyone else? contacts.doc

I can only speak from experience a year or so ago... and that was at my old school... They looked at running FMS over a Citrix-based network but decided in the end to go fat for the FMS machines only. I can't remember the specifics, but they found that it didn't run happily on thin client / or they weren't happy with how it was running.. That's not to say it can't be done... just that fat proved the way forward! (if only... she says, patting her lager belly) Ahem..

I don't have direct experience of buying from the refurb store, but I've read many an experience from people who have on the MoneySavingExpert forum that I post on. There's a possibility that I know of a NM job coming up in a school locally... depending on where you are in Bedford, it may be commutable... My old NM at my previous school wants to leave within the next 12mths or so, when I spoke to him he said that he wants to relocate away from MK and thus will leave the job he's been in for about 11 years... That's the only problem - it could be sometime in the next 12mths, or it could be longer... Should I hear of his departure soonish, I will try to remember to let you know! (what I should add is that the school are renowned for paying good money to the 'right' candidate)

Ditto ditto ditto all of the above. What amazes me is that most staff think we're psychic - ours have returned expecting us to have done stuff they never told us about! Plus all the usual "I've forgotten my password", teachers giving out Yacapaca usernames and not telling the kids that they're *not* for system login... projectors, Interactive Whiteboards (that's a swearword in our office), office moves, IP phones, Bromcom, new staff etc etc etc etc I'm very glad it's Friday night, but I suspect that it won't change next week either

I think if you set the password as blank, it overrides the 'change password at next logon' because there's no password to change. We used UserManagemeNT to set our users up, which allowed us to set all the passwords at once. The only way we force the students to change their password at next logon is to set a password in the first place, and then tick the 'change password at next logon'. I've not found another way to bulk-set passwords, but I'm sure one of these lovely people here will have a way (when there's a means, there's a method 'n all that)

I am back... for a few months, at least. I haven't really been away, just been busy...!!! The summer's been mental - I've steamed through my workload whilst the NM regularly arrived at 10-11am and left when I did between 2-3pm. Needless to say, he didn't achieve much. The last week of hols, I went away and left NM with a list of outstanding stuff (most of which, I hasten to add, he should've done in the hols - like the Bromcom updates)... and hardly anything was ticked off when I went back on Friday. I then learn that: a) he's agreed that he'll work 7.15-3.15 one day a week so he can take his son to some football club. Given that he struggles to make it in for 8am most days of the week, the likelihood of him managing 7.15? I'll leave that for you to decide b) he's going to India for another holiday from the 5-22nd October. I know this because he phoned and begged me not to leave by then. Unfortunately I don't think I will. I must remember to check his holiday allowance as I don't think he has enough days left... we'll see.... All this to look forward to whilst I recover from falling out of my parents' loft hatch at the weekend... yes, I really did, and have the bruises, cuts and strained muscles to show for it! Must not climb into lofts any time soon... (it did give me a damn fine excuse to sit at home on the sofa playing PS2 all day today, and probably tomorrow, mind.... whilst the NM runs around like a headless chicken because the staff are back )

Now, I've moved all our yeargroups around and promoted the years upwards in AD. We have a separate OU for each of our years. So - for example - I've bulk-moved the Year 8s to Year 9, but I'm stuck. The new Year 9s are currently members of both Year 8 and Year 9 OUs. Is there a quick way to remove all the Year 9s from the Year 8 group membership? I can see "add to group" but not a bulk "remove"!!!!

I'm with AJ on this one... I have to have things open in a certain order, and will close things to shuffle them. You're not alone AJ, that's two of us who are obsessively compulsive about our taskbar orderings!!!

You heard it here first. Long Suffering Limited will be established, and the sole job will be to clean and tidy projectors. NM just emailed me: "I’ve just got a price for having a company clean our projectors once a year. £190 call out fee per person £90 per hour after that. I think I would like to become a projector cleaner."

I have so far achieved: Everything that my NM hasn't, some of what my NM decided to turn up for. I've tidied all the IT suites, installed Flowol system-wide, rebuilt some new machines, fixed the learning mentor's home machine (for a few quid ), ordered new remotes, fixed some knackered machines, got quotes for things the NM is supposed to be ordering... and organised the removal/redeployment of the old music/art machines to admin (ssshhhhh, the head of IT will go mental if he thinks equipment is being removed from Teaching & Learning to go to admin. What he conveniently forgets is that if admin don't have the machines - the school stops running). ... all in between organising appointments with the mortgage advisors at Nationwide to find out if my new job will allow me to move to bigger and better things. Only then will I discover just how much fun DIY is... at the moment the flat I live in is 8mths old and therefore needs no work at all.. I'll stick to the ironing ;-)

Very interesting... especially as our Sophos licence is up for renewal shortly! My only question would be - what do they do with the information? Especially for the 'home' user on the free edition - is the information they gather used in any way? I shall keep an eye on this thread...
