I'm not sure they went the best way about introducing it, I know it has been done before by the BIG guys at Marvel, DC, etc. You know a few years back there was a thirst for those kind of films, didn't really matter who the lead was (hell, they even got away with Ant-Man...just). But the general public seems to be over it, so to go all out for a film on character(s) very few will know about, seems to me like a thing you'd only do to attract Trek fans and this was not something that was going to play well with hardcore Trek fans... strange tactic. Initially my OH told me about it as she watches some stuff on Paramount+ and I thought, actually I might be interested in a new 'spin-off' Trek series, then I found out it was actually a film...

I've got to say.... what an awful film! Don't normally comment, but just felt I had to... Probably the first 'Trek' film (however loosely affiliated) I've seriously considered not watching all the way through... I stopped it to make a coffee half way through and pondered whether I should go and do something more interesting... like watch my old hard drive defrag... I've always thought that 'The Emperor' was more a pantomime villain, but she was almost OK as side character/protagonist at some points in Discovery so I suspended my disbelief. However, being the main character here was too much, there were points I expected her to do an overly exaggerated super evil villain laugh... just had that feel to it (I know it's Star Trek, so it's not going to be raw and edgy). The story line was tired and I guess in a short film (for these days) didn't have time for all individual characters to be fully explored (considering 99% of them were new 'Trek' characters), but I'm not sure how it could have been fluffed and padded without plodding, so agree with the above, a few things didn't make sense in the big build up for an hour and a half leading to an ultimately short and disappointing 30 second conclusion... with a poor 'comedy' end clip, unfortunately leaving it open for a sequel. Most of it felt a lot like a poor man's Guardians rip off.

Unless you are on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 which is EOL Jan 9, 2029 I also wasn't sure the comment about RPA / Cyber insurance not covering you because of the age of the machines was correct either... However, regardless of the OS being up to date, it's very doubtful 12 year old computers have had recent BIOS/UEFI updates to address any security issues and that might invalidate your cover, no?

Wait, what?! As for the OP... There is no way any decent IT consultant should be advising registry hacks or stating no security updates is 'minimal risk', so you're certainly not over reacting to that. But they're probably just telling them what they want to hear and being led by them saying they really can't afford new machines, so offering them unsupported alternatives (that's not 'professional' advice, which makes sense as you say, they're on more than just professional terms with certain members of the SLT). Good call on employing an IT consultant, whilst already employing an IT professional and an MSP whose recommendations they are ignoring... Apart from getting out of there where you are clearly undervalued... Options (which you've already posted replies to... sorry went to get a coffee mid post)? Go LTSC (Teams on the web and local installs of Office if you have OVS-ES). Make the case for ESU (for security) Get it in writing that you are being forced to use 'hacks' to run an OS on unsupported hardware and agree to support it on a best effort basis. If they are willing to stretch to £180 per machine, you might be able to replace some x2 @ c£90 (like @mikes post about the "Lenovo Refurbed Tiny PC's off Amazon for around £95") We too have a suite of 12 year old machines (on LTSC) and boot up times (from cold) are roughly 20s and 40s to log in (I have upgraded them over the years with SSD, more RAM and GFX card).

Not so much a lie, rather a very broad brush stroke statement... ...and the internet is full of that statement, repeated in nearly every post when searching about Li-ion battery life , such as... However, some articles go further and expand on the fact that the actual chemistry of the battery (LFP/NCA/NMC), the charging regime, quality, depth of discharge, conditions, and other factors will have an impact. Also, it is noted in some that a full 'cycle' is completely draining to 0% and then charging to 100%, which probably doesn't happen much.

Do you think it's actually an Office problem, I presume you didn't have this issue with previous versions? Do you have this problem when logged on as another user? I'm actually not going to be much help here, but I have similar issues (although not with Office 2024) with trying to troubleshoot student (and even teacher) devices as they are so locked down I can't actually do anything 'extra' with them when logged in as the user... I do get similar messages on 'save' for the students, but over the years I have created so many GPOs to disable things, lock save locations, hide drives, it may well be the message relates to another location that is blocked which is why you can OK through it? My first suggestion would be (if you can) is try to remove an affected PC to a clean OU and see if the problem persists.

Unfortunately there's probably zero chance I'm going to be able to get my hands on their Macbook now... that was the first time I'd actually seen it in well over a year or so... Just out of interest, is that version 24? What's the lowest MacOS it supports... 12?

The Headteacher has come to me with an urgent request for Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.... I have done this loads on Windows, but they have a MacBook and this has me going round in circles... We have a Creative Cloud subscription and in Adobe Admin Console, I have created a package (for Mac Intel - Creative Cloud Desktop Application & Adobe Acrobat Pro DC) and downloaded it. We use Google to Auth. I put the .pkg onto the Macbook and installed it, but I can't actually find the Acrobat application. I open the Creative Cloud application and sign in with the Google ID, then it shows me Acrobat in the list of Apps in the plan (Acrobat isn't there), it's in the list of 'Available by request' so I click on 'Request Access' and click the 'Send Request' button.... and it does nothing... OK, I go to the Adobe Console and find out they have never been added in to the users that get access to the packages, so I added them and signed out of Creative Cloud and back in. I now find Adobe Acrobat in the list of apps and.... it's not compatible!! So, now I have to find a hard drive, create a Time Disk or whatever it's called (because they have never done a backup in all the time they've been using it) and upgrade his MacOS to a compatible version.... before 4 p.m. Well, it's not happening so I give him the bad news and enquire what the urgent need is to see if I can come up with an alternative... they need to edit policy PDFs over the weekend before a Gov meeting on Monday. So I say I'm pretty sure PDFs can be converted to Word in Acrobat Reader, edited and converted back to PDF, but apparently they tried before and say this hasn't worked. I ask what they are opening PDFs in... and the answer is Chrome. Also I think they can still log in to Acrobat online using Google Auth which would be much better than converting...?

Purely for research purposes... Completely agree, although it would obviously be the child signing-in to the device not the parent and I doubt the parents understand (as we don't fully). I also doubt very much anyone has reached out to the parents to advise them or explain that if they let a child sign-in on their device (possibly the only device in the house) it compromises both their device in terms of what we could potentially see and our Google Workspace from (as you say) their possibly compromised devices. I mean (apart from us maybe) who wouldn't let their child sign-in on the household device to let them do their homework?

Yes, we had OnlyFans, Tinder, etc. Interesting... does anyone know the actual process that makes this happen? Is this a Google thing or a Chrome thing? Private device, phone, tablet or computer... presumably the parents have these tabs open in the browser? Child opens new tab and logs in to school Google Workspace\Classroom, browser tries to log in the other tabs with this user account? Or are we saying the child is trying to log in to OnlyFans with their Google Workspace account... does it have a log-in with Google SSO (honestly never looked... honestly)? Either way, if you could find out who had done this, a phone call from the school to remind them of 'e-safety' may raise questions about how the school can see any information about anything that happens on their private device...

Just to add an extra option depending on your set-up and whether you think you can fend off the 'you are impacting T&L' accusations... I do seem to remember that I was concerned about the online picture search a very long time ago and unticked it on install iirc, luckily we are a small school and all my installs are manual (yes, I know), but I think it did break other things (possibly templates and other online content from Office). There is a GPO to stop Office connecting to the internet, but that could also stop other things... * Do not allow Office to connect to the Internet – Office applications do not connect to the Internet to access online services, or to download the latest online content from Office.com. Of course if you're using the online O365 version I have no idea if you can achieve similar results somehow. Now... on to 'Insert Online Videos'... I wonder if that bypasses any filtering...? FFS!!!! I'm still trying to battle through getting this installed and yesterday looked at one of the iPads which was full because it finally downloaded 18.2.1 and today it has somehow regained all its storage... ...because 18.2.1 has disappeared... now I have to start all over again with 18.3 I cannot get Meraki SM to kick off an OS update even by selecting 'Install Latest OS update'!!!!

I've always logged in to Chrome (or rather it logs itself in whenever I sign on to the anything Google related, like the Google Workspace Admin portal). Now, the Google Workspace Admin portal logs itself out after a period of time and the last couple of days whenever I sign back in, a pop-up box tells me 'Your organization requires a profile'. It asks me to a add a 'managed profile to the browser' and wants to know if I want to 'add existing browsing data to managed profile'... If I press cancel it logs me out of Chrome and any Google Workspace pages and I am now 'Person 2'. Anybody know what's changed (I haven't made any)?

Interestingly when I go to download/insert it though it fails. To go nuclear... Word > Word Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings - Untick 'Turn on optional connected experiences' and make them copy/paste, snip or save a picture from a 'web browser of your choice' image search (can't seem to find it easily on Google Images)... I don't know what else this breaks or if there is a GPO to roll out.

Yes, I guess the computer does the downloading and unpacking which would help, but I'm hoping I don't need to do that for 100s of iPads. Unfortunately 32GB here... because how much space could a couple of apps take? Luckily they are glorified cameras and internet research devices, so I've asked the teachers to give me a list of 'essential' apps, everything else is getting deleted, however Garage Band is being used in music lessons and they are creating a song week by week. Luckily I've managed to get a couple of the teachers to tell the kids to delete all the photos & videos, the apps I can do via the MDM and some of them need a reboot as it seems they are holding on to cache (because I don't even know the last time they were turned off and on again), but with over 21GB already used (18GB for the OS and 3GB System Data) it's always cutting it fine... Still don't seem to be able to get the iPads to actually do the update in a through the Cisco Meraki SM though...

Pretty sure when I started messing around with Hyper-V and ran into problems like this, it was usually the network adapter...

This latest iPadOS update is kicking my butt... A lot of the iPads are saying they can't download or install due to needing 11 or 12GB free space for downloading/unpacking/installing! Anyone else having this problem?

Had similar thoughts initially, but now I have received communication from White Rose Education: "Our videos have always been hosted on the Vimeo platform but are also embedded in our website in the Home Learning section." So, now I have to message the teacher and wait for them to confirm, as I don't have access to the platform...

Yes, we can allow embedded content and have allowed it for Vimeo hosted videos, however after much discussion with LGfL I've talked to the teacher and it appears these are just links on the White Rose site, which then open a new tab directly to the video on the Vimeo site and are not embedded.

I think I may have fixed it, but I'll leave this post up as a reminder to actually check the facts and not rely on someone saying it's not working even after following the instructions... I went to see the BM and asked them to show me what they were doing. They proceeded to the Pupil Details page, panel 8 (Ethnicity), clicked on the 'History' link (in the sidebar).... and said "look, there's no orange bar like there is in the instructions!" So I said "what about that 'History' button in the actual panel?" They click on it and a box with orange bars appears...
