  1. Hi Guys, I use to do these calculations when working as an Architect in the IT Outsourcing industry..... 1:200 for Student devices and 1:125 for Staff devices.... Thin Clients get up to 1:800 (assuming a swap out model).... But...there are also a lot of other factors to take into account when getting the actual fte ratios I have not included any AV work in here as yet.... see picture attached.
  2. Try thes ratios There is a lot more to this than just PC's to take into account....
  3. The Vision for ICT must be compliment the Vision that has been prepared and agreed to by the School Executive/Board or whatever structure you have in place, and it must have support at this level (and by support I mean money!!!!)... Once the stakeholders in the school have all contributed to the grander Vision above, then you can create your Vision, which in perspective, is an ENABLER of the grander Vision... It is important to not talk about specific technologies, but how technology as a tool can enable the Vision...(does this make sense). btw...I do like the statement you created earlier and will use some of it when the time comes (my school looks like going down the BYOD path soon).
  4. This is good...it is the sort of stuff educators want to hear...even if they have no clue to what it really means....ie...BYOD....
  5. just a rogue device....student laptop or staff laptop from home perhaps....
  6. TS Gateway works well....
  7. Could be any number of devices...I would probably want to know what they are though......
  8. Chargeback with a papercut solution does it....
  9. Hi, Had this problem 16 months ago...it seemed to be a network issue. Ever since I created a dedicated printer vlan I have had no issue....Has anyone else checked this???? Richard
  10. Unless of course the ISP for the BB has not enabled the BIS mail icons on the BB, in which case you ask the teacher to tell there telco\ISP to set it up....would you like screenshots of the client????
  11. Hi, Outlook is a native client on the BB and it uses the webmail settings....there is nothing fiddly about it. This is not using the browser, but a proper built in client....it works very well... Richard
  12. Wouldn't think...would be doing at this size...
  13. build a DHCP server.....do not use your core switch this way...although in this case you cannot do i..dhcp on the 5406 that is..
  14. have you bought them yet????
  15. portal via sharepoint perhaps.....
  16. All of which can be done on any device...not just an IPAD.....It is not the IPAD that is important, but the use of the device....it should not matter what device the end-user has, but from an IT perspective, it is how you manage the services, the device just being a service, as are the software tools.....If the management and all the support contracts make sense, then I guess it is the right tool for you....I cannot see anything that makes sense with APPLE support contracts btw....maybe I missed something here... btw..look at live@edu or office365 for students....it is free...and you get web-apps...and security...
  17. Are you saying you have outsourced IPAD support to the end-user?? I guess that solves the management side of things? What happens when it breaks, and the teacher says it is an invaluable tool for my class and I can't teach without it?......It seems like a lot of management overhead thats all...
  18. Can I ask the obvious question....why are you looking to purchase something and then ask about useful apps? I know the whole picture has not been painted, but it seems odd that the decision is IPAD (the tool) looks like it has been made, but the use of the tool (software apps) may not be known.....
  19. If teacher owned devices, just use the webmail feature on the BB, forget BES or ActiveSunc (unless you want to wipe devices and have a real security need). but remember these are teacher owned, not school owned, so unless there is a policy requirement, the webmail function is fine.
  20. Lansweeper by a mile....
  21. Room Booking Exchange Asset Management Lansweeper Help Desk ZENDESK Active Directory Powershell scripts from MAZE output Print Management Papercut Software Deployment SCCM Image deployment SCCM On this topic, Lansweeper is very good for what it is and what it costs. I can remote control devices, check hardware, check software, reboot devices, notification of printers almost out of toner...amongst a real lot of useful things....highly recommended....
  22. to be honest, I cannot see any good case for IPAD use in schoolwide environment...I think they are only useful in niche areas within the school to support special programs.... btw..this is my opinion only, but am seeing a lot of evidence to support this view in other forums and from talking to colleagues in other schools.
  23. I need to ask what decision process lead your school to think the IPAD was the right answer. Where considerations of the underlying infrastructure (non-functional requirements) taken into account? Have they taken into account the Total Cost of Ownership here (possible infrastructure and employment costs). Have they looked at other options in the tablet space. If you are a MS shop, then the whole integration and mangement is going to be a big problem for you. The other big question is the support agreements from Apple, will you get next business day support (like you do from Dell for example)? I think the trick is to not be opposed, but point out issues that will cause a problem. ie..it can be done but there is a lot of work to do to get there... The only real successful IPAD implementation I have seen is to outsource all the support to the users themselves, make them responsible. Mind you, 1200 is a large fleet....considering they are a consumer level device. If you do this, then you need to consider your edge security at the school (how good is your webfilter etc.). The bottom line is that IPADS are not true Enterprise Class (no matter what Apple tell you), and most likely will never be in that category. If you are an Apple based school now, then it may work.
  24. Did you get this sorted? From the config it looks like IGMP is enabled....ports tagged and untagged seem ok..I think... querier enabled??? I will recheck my config tomorrow....
  25. PM me your email and I can send you my IP and Port Planning documents that was used for implementation purposes....it may help...
