Did you reindex (with the SIMS patch) or rebuild (with the maintenance plan)?

Well, before the reindexing plan was in place, SIMS reporting was like a sloth with gout. After the reindexing plan it's reasonable. Going on this, I'd say it's a worthwhile measure. If you do it, post back with your result either way.

Important point - SQL Express edition doesn't have the SQL Agent and SSIS. Both of these are needed for maintenance plans. It's possible to script this as TSQL script which can be run on the server or remotely, but this wouldn't be as trivial to set up.

I would say so. Our reports were practically unusable until I did this. Now they're back to normal. Not brilliant, but normal. The plan only takes five minutes to set up. Set it to run it over the weekend and see if there's an improvement on Monday. If you do try it, can you let us know the result?

We had dire performance, and the clients regularly timed-out. The report speeds are now back to normal after setting up a maintenance plan to rebuild indexes. The trouble with the SIMS reindex patch is that it doesn't update the statistics. Rebuilding the indexes generates new statistics so the query optimiser can produce better execution plans. If Capita added a further index for att_mark_normalised things would improve further. You're doing it wrong. Forget fancy packaged latte nonsense - it's high-fat muck. The cornerstone is the espresso. One large scoop of fine grounds, and just a little water through an Aeropress. Do not filter a full cup of water through, this is the wrong approach which will give you a bitter cup. Filtering a small quantity of hot (but not boiling) water through grounds will leave you with a strong, smooth espresso. Add water to dilute it to taste. I also use a Swissgold one-cup reusable filter thingy from Whittards. It's very good. If that's not your cup of tea... sorry, couldn't resist it... a French press or cafitierre will give a good cup. Drip coffee is a poor runner up, in my opinion. I've never had much success with a drip machine. Instant coffee should not be considered part of the discussion.

That is a nice coffee, but I tend to avoid it because of the quantities I imbibe. Besides, if I had that, I'd be awake all afternoon.

Ha... this reminds me of a time a couple of years ago when I received a bag of chocolate covered coffee beans as part of a Christmas goody bag. Yep. Used to have a VW camper but sold it a few years ago. I started out with all sorts of nylon tents, but they either broke or aggravated me so much I broke them. Now have a splendid bell-tent which I should have bought in the first place. The model of simplicity, it goes up in 10 minutes and looks great.
