We use the Setx.exe command (built-in to Windows) to do something similar. It's a bit old-school, but it works well enough. As ruddj suggested, build up your variables then use setx to set them in a logon script. More info here: Setx - Set environment variables

Utterly infuriating. This has scuppered my plans for my HP microserver NAS/Media Centre. Dammit three times round the carpark. Out of principle I'm not paying 3x the price. The current stock was manufactured months ago and bought for peanuts by the wholesalers. Take the Samsung F4. Pre-mania price £55 ish. Places like ebuyer probably bought them in at around £20. Now selling for £150. That's the free market, I suppose.

Well, my Microserver arrived (thanks @ServersPlus) but still wondering about the HDMI card. I want it to directly connect it to a quality amp for my MP3 collection. I have a Terratec Phase 22 pro soundcard knocking about, but I have a feeling it won't fit in the half-height slot. What's the best way of getting HDMI out to a TV and sound out to a separates amp? I suspect it will be a HDMI card plus a separate sound card, unless anyone knows better? SLight fly in the ointment, it must work with Ubuntu 11.10. ATI have a better track record with open source....

The cacls line sets the security. It will deny the group gsgstudents rights to the folder. If you want different rights, you can configure cacls to do what you need. Here's the lowdown on cacls. Well, I ordered a Microserver last night. I didn't get the memory & disk bundle, just the basic model. I'll use the supplied 250G disk for the OS - probably Ubuntu with a media front-end, and get an additional two 1 or 2TB disks, mirrored if the BIOS will support it, or a scheduled rsync. Any recommendations for disks? Also thinking of getting a bluetooth mini-keyboard with pad - this should round it off nicely with the HDMI card Authur found.

This should be a starting point. Look up the syntax for CACLS to make sure it does what you need. This is the crux of cruxes. Most operators install customised ROMS chock full of stuff you don't want. It's a lot of work for operators to re-engineer a new OS for existing phones, so most don't bother as a phone life-cycle is very short. As hinted above, the very best thing you can do is install a custom firmware. I've got an Orange San Fransisco, I installed the latest Cyanogen ROM and the phone is twice the phone it was. Better battery life and better operation.

Great. I'll probably get one. I won't be using Windows, maybe Debian+XBMC, Mythbuntu or Element. No hardware raid isn't the end of the world, maybe just schedule a daily rsync between drives.

Watch your forensic trail. Are you using a Tableau write-blocker or working off a binary copy of the disk? If you're analysing live data, especially on your own, a good defence will have this thrown out.
