  1. great bit of work there, been playing with it, its very nice, is there a way to log off from the current admin account, you know when you click admin and it lets you choose your account... Also i've not played much with iis, i can access the pages from the machine its hosted on but not others on the network...any thoughts? also through the school guardian filter it got detected as porn lol, i mean its good but i wouldnt say its quite pornographic!! Good work man! Thanks
  2. for the benefit of anyone else having similar issues found the offending policy was User>Policies>Admin Templates>Windows Components> Windows Explorer> Allow only per user or approved shell extensions DISABLE. now to see what other side affects this change has!
  3. if i understand the jargon properly then yes we have a hyper-v server running 8 virtual xp machines (not got desktop pooling sorted yet) and the clients are pointing directly to one of these vm's. The full fat clients are using rdp within xp (just for testing still) and the axels are doing it via rdp aswell. The usb drives show up as E on clib-01 etc (local machine)
  4. We are having trouble with usb drives and rdp, we have a 2008r2 hyper-v server and were using axels/ rdp fat clients to connect to the sessions, the issue we have is that admins can access the usb drive on the virtual machine but no other users can (it appears but a double click does nothing), is there a policy somewhere that is restricting this, we have the virtual machines using the same group policies as the normal (non virtual) machines and its all fine and dandy with them...any ideas where we need to start looking??? Posting here as advised by Matt @ Axel
  5. Weve just put our first thinclient into the live enviroment, its running xp via hyper-v on a 2008 r2 server, All works fine under an admin account usb drives, printers everything, but when signed on as a student the usb drive shows up but when you click on it nothing happens.... Any Ideas??? is this a group policy somewhere? Also when the user logs off it goes to the Axel "Desktop" is there anyway for it to stay at a windows logon box? These arent pooled desktops as we have to suss out the certificates for that, so these are just pointing straight to a vm on hyper-v. starting to panic now as the kiddies come back on tuesday! Many thanks!!!
  6. thanks for the responses, will look into local update publisher till we have more time to look at sccm, sparkeh how do you get the hardware independant xp image? Thanks
  7. Firstly hello! great forum been a great help to me many times! Now after reading threads on sccm and how people handle there images and deploying msi's for all the required programs of there different systems, it made me think why can't we do that??!! The dream would be to have 1 or 2 universal base win xp images and then deploy all the required software via msi's to avoid constantly updating flash and java etc The reality, this is a split site secondary school (joined by 100mb fibre optic)with about 1200 students, i've only been here a few months and im not the senior tech, but ive manage to implement wds which is working nicely (better than ghost or netrunna was!) we currently have maybe 15 different images? As each dept needs different software and we have 6/7 different types of system (dell 520's 755s, 745s, higrades, novatechs and 4/5 different laptop models) there are about 550-600 machines and a plethora of servers. We have been unable to get msi's deploying properly maybe a third will get the software and the rest ignore it, so that has stopped us using msi's and instead jam packing the images with all they are likely to need. I attempted installing sccm 07 and it gave me some generic error about a sql server?? So that got abandoned! so the questions.... How can we capture an image of an xp disc for wds, so it basically installs properly or is hardware independant? Is there a known problem with msi's not being deployed to all systems, ways around it, things to check? Does sccm2007 do all of these things im wanting and if so are there any special steps needed in setting it up ie sql ? are there limits to what can be msi'd for example office, sims, adobe cs5? our setup: twin site school connected by 100meg fibre optic cable, 550-600 systems, dell servers incl 2x r610s for when we start virtualising the systems, dc replication between sites and filestore replication, wds is currently running on the dc's. it seems to me like we may be lagging behind in some technologies and doing things the hard way! I'm exhausted how about you??! Any help appreciated
