My next door neighbour drives for Yodel as does another friend of mine and I must admit that it really is a 'bare bones' sort of business and I'm told you're paid on the number of parcels you deliver which probably accounts for why many get 'false signatures'. Even so, you'd think that they'd realise this business model is hurting their reputation. Maybe they don't care?

You'd think so wouldn't you but no - case in point: Amazon. Despite terrible feedback from customers, Amazon actually INVESTED in Yodel. Yeah this happens a lot. Our office is literally down the road from the YODEL distribution centre - you can practically see it from the top floor so inevitably our deliveries never make it here. They like to CLAIM there was no-one here which is male-cow-excrement as we have people working around the clock for our International support. The drivers are just bare faced liars. For what it's worth, as a customer you could just ask for a refund. I did that once on a cat post that went missing. Got a refund and it turned up a week later randomly.

I phoned my GP to opt out and they hung up on me! lol. I'll be dropping the opt out form off in the next few days.

Close. Not QUITE what I'm thinking of, but more or less. The one I've seen (possibly made of Mechano or Lego, possibly at School back in the dark ages) had a 1/4 circle of toothed track, a cog wheel and a motor. Simple as.

You can do this with a spinning motor, a cog wheel and a semi-circular toothed track. The direction of the motor turns the cog which rotates the toothed track, the end of which is attached to the flap. But I can't for the life of me remember what it's called or I'd link a pic.

I vaguely remember a Mechano type mechanism with cogs and wheels attached to a runner. When the wheel moves forward, the runner pushes out, when it goes backwards it closes it again. I'm not sure 'flaps' qualify as 'drawers' though...

Yeah upside down is straightforward too. When I was at University doing my PGCE we had a 'professional themes' session on Dyslexia (it was mixed disciplines so not just the Science lot) and the instructor put up a slide with a Shakeperian Sonnet in Mirror image and did a round robin around the table asking people to try to read it out loud. He used this as an example of how difficult and frustrating it was for Dyslexic pupils to have to decipher the words they are reading and to illustrate how daunting round-robin reading was. I think he also used it to point out the difficulties pupils who've learned to read and write languages that read right to left (such as arabic) face when learning English. When it came to me I just read it fluently and it wasn't difficult at all. I think this is part of the differences between how left and right handers process information. I'd be interested to see some statistics comparing instances of left and right handedness in pupils with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia as I wonder if there is genuinely a difference in the way Left and Right handed peoples brains interpret visual stimulus. LeBoyfriend is a Dyslexic (Right hander just fyi) and often he will literally not be able to see that a word is written if it is written backwards/mirrored or is upside down. He tells me that it is just a pattern to him and he can't identify it as a word at all. Although he is excellent at Scrabble because he says he's used to unscrambling words.

I don't recall eating any differently - I've always held my utensils the 'Right handed way'. I don't really understand how it benefits left handers to hold the Knife in the left hand. I hold my fork in my left hand because the fork is the one that is doing the lifting and manipulating of the food - the knife just cuts it. I hold my soup and dessert spoons in my left hand too. Essentially, anything that requires fine motor skills I do with my left hand (although ironically I'm WAY better at using a mouse with my right hand and I even have a trackball mouse) so I really don't understand why Left handers would find holding the fork in their right hand easier as the fork is the one needing the finer motor skills isn't it?

Yes, my Father was forced to write with his right hand (and he's 65) and now he can only write in block capitals. In the late 80's as a solidly unrepentant left hander (although I use a mouse with my right and can be considered ambidextrous in many things) I was put in a remedial writing class at school because I was left handed. Not because I had trouble reading or because I needed support, but simply because I was a left hander and they considered it a learning difficulty. I hated it and was miserable because the 'right handed' exercises we had to do had me forming letters the wrong way. If I have a left handed child I'll come down on the school like a tonne of bricks if they try to force him or her to do exercises based around right handed media. On the plus side, I can write (and read) fluently in mirror image. I have a theory on the whole 'Ambidextrous' thing - as a society we are still 'favouring' Right handedness - everywhere you look things are set up by default as 'right handed' - computers, mice, scissors, spiral bound notebooks, etc. Which means that Left Handers naturally have to BECOME ambidextrous in order to function. If there were an equal amount of left handed tools available (like scissors for example, or can openers) you'd probably find less ambidextrous left handers. I think we are simply 'coping' with the way the world is.

^ This A common issue that crops up in the workplace is the Attendance incentive. Many businesses offer incentives for 100% attendance which means that many people who SHOULD be off sick and NOT spreading their viruses through the workplace are coming into work. Which means that others, with perhaps compromised or generally weak immune systems are being exposed to all sorts of nasties that we really shouldn't be. The same goes for schools. All this bureaucratic attendance nonsense around schools at the moment is making me so mad. IMO Schools should be open all year the same as a private sector workplace and pupils are given a holiday allowance (the same as in the private sector and in addition to bank holidays) that they can request (the same way private sector workers do). That way families can book their holidays at convenient times together avoiding the 'School holiday price hikes'. Working parents aren't stuck for child care because there are 3 other parents off during the summer holiday period. In the same way as the private sector can (and does) do, certain times of year can be declared a holiday embargo except for extreme circumstances. So a year 11 pupil couldn't book time off during the GCSE exam period, but a year 8 could (for example). Add a two week 'sick leave' allowance (although obviously there are no penalties to going over) and you have a system that effectively introduces kids to the world of work and helps them become responsible for their own absences.

I found when I was at University that the number of Left handers in Scientific disciplines was considerably greater than the 1-in-3 number we see in general population. I did Geology and in fact more than 2/3 of the cohort were left handers. When I did my teacher training in the Secondary Science discipline again the numbers of Left Handers were much higher than in the other disciplines like English and History. I think IT is a mixed bag because on the one side you have the 'scientific' or heavily technical people like developers, and on the other you have the more 'artistic' people like product designers, documentation etc. Among support people there are a wide variety of skill sets with some people less technical and more customer service oriented and others more technical. There is a very clear demographic skew between our Technical office and our Sales Office - the number of Left handers in our technical office is way above 'average' and there are more right handers in our sales office. I read somewhere that when a person is developing in the womb, there are a bunch of fibres connecting the two hemispheres of the brain and that when you're born, a percentage of those fibres naturally die off as part of the developmental process and that people that are left handed had less fibres die than right handers and that this explains why left handers have a predisposition to analytical disciplines because of the way their brains process information. It was very interesting.

I recently saw conflicting news articles about how ISIS is forcing all women and girls in their occupied territory to undergo FGM. Cue massive uproar on the internet. I then read a bunch of articles that said it was anti-ISIS propaganda. What I think is more likely is that ISIS are promoting Sharia Law with it's myriad good and bad points and SOME women MAY have been subjected to Sharia-related justice practices and that someone has heard about women being subjected to Sharia law and made the leap to FGM. I can't see, given the situation they are in and the lack of enforceability, that FGM will be particularly high on the ISIS agenda - at least not right now. Maybe in future when they've taken over the whole country and have an iron grip on the populace, but probably not right now. This is a perfect example of not being able to take statements at face value in the media. I'm certainly not sure North Korea has the power to affect large countries like China, Russia and the USA, but if they DID wade into the fray it would be likely their actions would just be disruptive rather than seriously threatening, but even small actions can have ripples of consequence so it is certainly worth keeping them in your peripheral vision (so to speak). I think that regardless of whether it was Russian troops, pro-Russian separatists or anti-Russian fighters that fired the missile, the bottom line is that an innocent passenger jet full of people who had (to the best of my understanding) nothing to do with the Ukraine conflict was shot down as a result of the conflict occurring in the area and it was an appalling tragedy and SOMEONE needs to be held accountable.
