Hi Does anyone know of a good program that I can use so students can search for files / folders. I know windows has a search, windows desktop search but this returns results that I do not want students to see. Even though the c drive is out of sight they can still see the results. they cannot do anything with them but I don't want to see anything they do not need to see. They can also look at all the pcs and servers on the network and see the printers connected to them. All I want them to search is there my docs I can't lock down windows desktop search enough through group policies. Many thanks

Hi I’m having a problem with sysprep at the moment. I create the answer file then run sysprep –mini –reseal. This never finishes, I have left it over night. Can’t seem to get fog to join it to the domain either Cheers

Hi In AD I copy an existing user to create a new user filling the relevant name / info etc. I go to client XP machine, new user can logon, home folder is created, roaming profile folder is created after log off all is ok. Now... If i just go to the relevant OU and create a new user filling in the details, setting profile path and home folder as an existing user. When i login to a client PC i get “windows cannot locate user profile etc..” let the logon continue the home folder is working ok with the correct permissions. AD knows the user is there because the login username and password are OK. Also if i use a bulk user creation tool i also get “windows cannot locate user profile etc..” The bulk created users and the new user have the relevant permissions. Copying a user work fine, creating new users from scratch does not work Where can i start looking for the problem Cheers

I Live and work in a school in Bucks Would anyone be kind enough to show me round their thin client solutions We have just had Citrix xen app installed. We have a new build coming up and I’m looking for ways to best utilise it. Our old desktop PC’s are now running thinstation and boot into a published desktop. I have just brought a HP T5630 Thin client for testing. Anybody know how to get it to boot directly into a Citrix published desktop? Cheers

Hi Our lovely ASA is still sitting under my desk in an unopened box. We are not an RM network here, they won a bid to just upgrade the network over the summer hols. They run out of time over the summer to complete the VLAN work so never got the chance to do anything with the ASA I am also thinking about having a go at setting it up, in the next couple of weeks Sorry I can’t be much help at the moment. Cheers

Having a strange problem. All students are on a single mandatory profile. Which has been working fine for some time. Just recently some students cannot get onto the internet. It is not PC specific as I have seen the problem. On the same PC one student can get on the web another other cant. I have removed the local profiles created when logging on, rebooted the PC and tested again, same problem. There are defo using the same mandatory profile. I have run gpresult for the PC / user and cannot see anything different between the results. App data, my docs, and start menu are redirected. Windows 2003 server and XP clients I am at a loss at the moment. Any pointers Cheers

Citrix Presentation server 4.5 I have setup my server farm with the web interface, no ssl, no https. Internally it works as it should. At home I connect to the school network using a CISCO VPN client. When the vpn connection is up and running i can ping all servers in my farm, remote desktop to anywhere within my network. I can launch the citrix web interface, logon and see the applications published to me. When i click on any of the applications i get the error “Cannot connect to the Citrix XenApp Server” I have no internal firewall within school (as yet) so the only firewall is at county level. I have saved the ICA file of one of my applications and looked at its contents. The IP address in the file is correct (ie one of the farm servers that I can ping). Internally I can telnet to the server IP address on port 1494. Externally through the vpn connection I cannot telnet to 1494. Am I correct in thinking it is just a firewalled port, ie if I get county to open 1494 I should be good to go? Are there any other ports that need to be open 2598?? Cheers

Another big thumbs up for VLC. Another one to look at is Helix streaming media server (not open source). It can broadcast (multi or uni cast) live to every PC in the school if you wanted at the same time as encoding it for use later. We have filmed a school football match and broadcast to 2 PC suites. Cheers

Hi We have a flat network at the moment and just replaced all out switches for Procurve, core is 5406zl I have a little knowledge of VLANs, I just after opinions as to what to put in each vlan Students and staff are obvious choices. Other VLAN I thought about are printers, CCTV. Would servers be best on own vlan? We have 5 Wireless AP, suppose they could be in own vlan. We also have three new laptop trolleys (not my idea). These at some point would be plugged into the network port in the classrooms which would mean they are in the teacher VLAN. I assume routing would take care of this. Any offers for what you have??

G’Day Our local authority has given the school the IP address 10.120.160.0/22 to use so it was just a flat network. We now have some money, so putting investment into the switches. New core switch HP5406zl, 8 x HP2810’s and the other switches are either HP2650’s, 2626’s and 1 HP1800. 15 in total. We are also having an ASA5510 firewall. The local authority provide a CISCO switch for our outside connection so this is our default gateway 10.120.160.1. The local authority also do our web filtering. I can allow extra websites through should I need to with local filtering, but to allow the extra websites through I have to specify an IP address or IP range. I want to create VLANS. Just 3 at the moment, one for server and switches etc, one for staff and one for students. I have an understanding of VLAN but a few things are driving me mad. My question(s) What would be the best way to go about creating VLANs in terms of the IP addressing for each VALN? I’m not worried about the commands to do the setting up at the moment. I know I can set multiple scopes on our DHCP server. Would the ASA or 5406zl do NAT, so what ever we do internally is transparent to the LA? There must be another school that has done something similar! Cheers for the help

I have a pc setup with everything I want on the image, office 2007 and Adobe CS3 etc. When I run RIPrep everything seems to go OK apart from one error about assembly At the end of the process I get a dialog box saying “riprep has completed successfully client shutdown started.” and tell me to read the error log. But it does not every shut down. The client never shutdown. If I click the cross (top right) the client does shutdown. I go through the process of installing the new image, all seems to go OK until the final shutdown and restart. Basically the image does not work. Should the client PC be a member of the domain before I run riprep? Cheers

Hi I s there a way that I can add a printer onto a users profile remotely after they have logged in. The printer is a net work printer. I know I can assign it at login with a script but that is not what I want. This network printer is only for some members of staff. If they come to need this printer they phone me and ask for it to be added. Just trying to save me getting off my backside really. Cheers

Our school is soon to become and Academy school. The new academy will have a new Dfes number. Our local SIMS support have suggested that we will need to start from day 1 with a new empty database, and import the current students into it. Could be great in one respect as it will get rid of lots of old rubbish / on longer needed data . If we start afresh what about the historical data. I know this could held on a second SIMS server but how will staff access this data? Would they need to, I assume they would at some point? What about when the census is run? Anyone been through this before? Cheers

I’m desperately trying to put the Head off the idea of laptop fro students. But anyway, how do you guys handle the student logins. I must be missing something. With staff I get them to login while connected to the wired network. They can them use the wireless network to login using the cached profile. So how do you do it with students do you just setup mandatory profiles on the laptops? Cheers

I’m surprised how many have said they are not required to wear steel toe caps. Isn’t it part of Health and safety. Our school will pay for the steels. I’ve completing a manual handling course, and as yet have not dropped anything. But accidents will happen even though you take as much care as you can. Even though I think I’m safe, what about the unpredictable things we work with (students that is). Carrying a PC, and little Jonnie comes round the corner and knocks into me bang goes the computer and possibly my foot. I just know that if I ever need to put in a claim for industrial injury, they WILL say why went you wearing projective footwear.

Walked through the reception door this morning. Not a hello or anything, just can you go to PE straight away their projector has packed up they are desperate for it, they think it’s the lamp. So first thing I’m up a ladder getting covered in s^%t changing a lamp. Get down form the ladder, while you’re here these 3 computers will not log on to network. Under the desk I go, all the cables had been messed up by students. That sorted, I thought I would grad a coffee. I had still not been back to my office, still was carrying my laptop. Part way through making coffee, Oh I’m glad I saw you I was just trying to ring. I’m desperate to print something for my class this morning and my printer has packed up. Don’t know what they have been up to with the printer but I get covered in toner, lovely. Get back to my office and while I’m typing this I get two phone calls desperate for help. One a PC not working the other call was to fix another printer. So the idea of getting changed every time something messy comes up would be a royal pain in the a%$e. I am filthy already, hands black. Would suit would be a mess and I’d look scruffier than I do normally Don’t think the school would pay the constant dry cleaning bills!!!!!

Hi When the time comes and something is dropped on your foot and puts you off work then they pull you for being sick you will have no come back. If its a worse injury they will say you should have been wearing safety shoes! cheers

I’m the network manager here. 8 Servers, 500 pc’s and laptops There is one other tech that is on long term sick. When she is here she is useless, the school ahs tried a number of time to get rid of her. The upshot is I do everything. Install cables, crawling through lofts etc, Install projectors drill into reinforced ceilings, move pcs, monitors, printer, and maintain everything. I wear polo shirts, dark jeans (not blue) and boots. I would like to look smarter. The boss had said he would like me to wear suits. I said how long would a suit last drilling into ceilings. I would look worse than before. He said when I need to do something messy I could just get changed. I would spend all day swapping what I wear. Even if I did wear suits, how many suits look good with steel top capped shoes / boots and Health and safety require. If anyone knows of some good steel capped foot ware please let me know

We have windows 2003 print server and all xp clients. The printers are a mix hp and Kyocera plus a few others for good measure. On Friday, just gone, a few printer started to have problems, staff / students could not print to them. We did have one student creating a loop in the network but ‘spanning tree’ and a quick execution took care of that. The printer were having problems before the loop This happened school wide. Now everybody is off I’m sat here trying to work it out. Not all printers are affected, it’s not limited to one make of printer. When I try and ping the affected printers I get a slow intermittent response. There is no network traffic as every one is off and only one or two PC’s still left on, no errors on any switches. Still having the same problem. I have tried completely removing one of the printers from the server and reinstall it same problem Anybody have any thoughts. I’m thinking of making a backup using Microsoft print migratory, removing the print server roll, restart the server, reinstall the server roll and restore the backup. I know I could change it another server but I would then have to go round and allocate the relevant printer to the relevant member of staff when they get back. Cheers Dave

I have tried to enable / disable various policies but one must be linked to another one! Logged on a student the favourites button shows but is greyed out, CTRL+D returns ‘this operation is cancelled due to…..’ I have used the admin template I found listed in the forums to redirect the favourites folder to the students home folders-works a treat. I would like to be humane about this so thumb screws are out, for the moment........ The server is 2003 standard Cheers
