Our group manages 150 or so mailboxes, mainly for staff/distribution lists, on an Exchange 2003 Standard Edition. The school plans to expand in the next couple of years and I'm guessing the number of mailboxes would hit 250-300 in about 2 years. I am also thinking of suggesting to move away from Exchange and use Google Apps instead (which is free for educational institutions). What are your thoughts on this?

Is it wise to deploy SCCM 2007 now rather than wait for 2012 version to come out?

Thanks for the input, David. Will keep this in mind. I hope Apple or some company come up with a way to manage these devices. They're pretty cheap and would indeed be a great tool for teaching.

Thanks ChrisH. Microsoft recommends 80/20 for this type of setup where 80% is served by one DHCP and the rest (20%) served by the other server. That still has holes since either of the two can go down and still leave the rest without services. I plan to buy 2 servers for virtualization, run VMWare and create a Windows 2008 R2 cluster using 2 virtual servers and then serve DHCP using that. Is this possible?

We use Zoho ManageEngine OpManager. The free version allows you to manage up to 10 devices. Great for monitoring servers and routers. You can monitor almost anything (via WMI or SNMP) with great alert functions (e.g. email, SMS, Twitter).

I just inherited a fairly medium-sized network (>500 workstations) on one broadcast domain. I plan to split this up into smaller subnets for better control and performance. The Windows 2008 R2 AD with 2 domain controllers is the least of my problem but what is bothering me is the lack of redundancy for the DHCP service which is really a major component. Other than putting the DHCP service in a 2008 cluster, what other methods are available to create a reliable DHCP service for a routed network?

The school is planning to give iPads to each student in the future and wondering what kind of tools are available for deploying and managing these devices from a centralized or a decentralized setup?

Can we still use the full features of Outlook 2010 with Live@Edu? It would be great if Outlook 2010 wouldn't be dumbed down to just a front-end email client. The students are already using Google Apps and they're quite okay with it. It also is a pain to manage any Exchange server, I'd rather use an off-campus solution or something that is easy to maintain.

FWIG, SIMS seems to dominate the market with no competition at all or am I missing something? Can you recommend an alternative to SIMS that can grow with an organization?

We still use Exchange 2003 for 100+ teachers & staff. The number mailboxes would probably increase to 150+ in the next 3 years. Is it better to just keep Exchange 2003 or move to 2010? From what I gather, it takes a lot of time, patience, and talent to manage an Exchange 2010 server but I wanted things to be simpler and easier. Replace Exchange 2003 with Zimbra or a similar product Stay with Exchange 2003 Migrate to Exchange 2010 What's your opinion?

We use Zoho's (formerly AdventNet) ManageEngine OpManager to monitor our servers. You can use it for free for up to 10 devices (e.g. servers, switches, routers, etc.). It's easy to setup. Can run on Linux and on Windows servers (for WMI communication).
