You can just wander in - I did last night, the rest of the site is still a car park. There are some strips of new tarmac and a tent in one corner covering a hole. Couple of OB trucks yesterday too. Security chap on the way out (New St) might stop you going but walk in from Grey Friars & its easy. Apparently.

Magnets don't necessarily clear a drive (strength decreases rapidly with distance & you can't get close enough to the platter without disassembling the drive). Formatting & reformatting - only if you're writing to each sector of the drive and not just clearing the FAT. The files could still be there, just not indexed. You need something like the dban boot disc - which is clearing a couple of drives for me as we speak. Don't forget the 'nousb' option if you're running it from a usb stick. Alternative uses for an old pc - depends what you want to learn about. Linux - web server (LAMP) / file server (freeNAS) / firewall (ipcop / untangle / dansguardian) / internet cache (squid) or just have a play with the desktop distros (mint / ubuntu etc etc). MythTV is fun too.

Depends on the clearance between the tyre and the seatstay and chainstay bridges - and how much mud you're planning to ride through. Post type mudguards are better than nothing though - suspension fork + normal mguard isn't always easy. Things like this RRP NeoGuard Fork Mudguard | Evans Cycles are worthwhile too - surprising how much muck gets from the front tyre into your face via the space in front of the bike.

No mudguards? Really? The wheels on a 29er are the same size as 700c ( = road bikes) and there are loads of mudguards for them. Many will be for narrower wheels but they are available for wide mtb size wheels. See (the late, great) Sheldon Brown's site for more - Tire Sizing Systems Mudguards are great!

Old curriculum machine + linux?

One of my schools has just ordered it - intrigued.

Having dabbled very briefly with it, it could be done elegantly with Ruby on Rails. Lots of tutorials out there, just try to make sure they reference the latest version of RoR (or whatever you've got installed). That assumes you have time to learn lots of stuff..

Tilaphos (other software exists), £20 webcam, old (xp) laptop. Ended up with 50,000 photos and counting. Using a linux box + jhead + mencoder to make sense of them (rename to date-time, convert to avi).

I wouldn't worry about the logs - Linux is designed to be on forever and rotates them peridically, throwing away the oldest ones. If you're really worried, put /var on a different partition.
