  1. From what i understand of the system, you can place certain students in groups which can only be accessed by certain people via the SIMS 'Lesson Monitor' system, as well as that, i understand it indicate if a alert has been sent by highlighting in differnt colouts etc.
  2. Yes, but when SIMS flags a student as being absent, then triggers Truancy Call to send an alert, this is what the senior management want the heads of year groups to monitor for each of their year groups etc.
  3. Yeah, it sure does, however the senior management team want it onall admin machines and all head of year groups machines so each can monitor their own year group.
  4. Hi All, We have just been informed that we have to install a new monitoring program called 'Truancy Call', this app interconnects with SIMS and then sends a automated text or phone call to the parents of those of whom have not been registered on the SIMS system. We have just browsed at it so far and will begin the Research and Development :?: process next week, has anyone used or does use this and is there anything we should know. As we have not had any imput and a member of senior management has decided just to buy it :x and then give it to us without any other input from the us the team employed to advise on technical matters within the college. :x Any tips which anyone has picked up along the way RE Truancy Call would be helpful, before we start. I am expecting as the senior management have bought it without consulting it, it will be a huge disaster, they want it on loads of machines, however, when I mentioned licences, they went white and asked what they are?

  7. ...? Heh, sorry about that...its early and for some reason I have the words from the big yellow teapot toy advert from the 80s in my head ) ah right, i wasn't sure if it was just because i hadn't awoken after being here from 6am this morning. Like every morning!
  8. Yep, same here, 120 new machines, 80+ interactive boards to install, all 11 media cabinets to be re cabled, new comms system, a few room moves. We usually have about 20 room moves, however, why move machines for staff which change dept when all machines have the same software on them, so it has been decided the machines go with the position and not the person, there have a been a few tears! and the best bit is, there are only two of us, as the other guy resigned and left yesterday! And hopefully I’ll be transferring during the holidays too!
  9. 6 week holidays, 90 new interactive white boards getting installed 120 new dekstops and 700 laptops not that much really!
  10. It's also on the reg, try this one: http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/07/09/geek_squad_sting/
  11. Has anyone seen this (Link below) :?: , it's giving general IT bods a bad name :x , it's about a sting operation which was launched on IT people which when fixing machines (Personal and Other) snoop through files and look at certain data which may not have anything to do with them. 8O Surely looking through the computer files to see what could be causing the problem is part of the diagnostic process . Although, given that the scenario given is only installing iTunes, I can see why this may not apply. http://consumerist.com/consumer/investigations/video-consumerist-catches-geek-squad-stealing-porn-from-customers-computer-271963.php
  12. So do we, we have a team of 3, 1 of which (me) is on 24/7 call out for when private companies hire the campus for conference ect and still, we get no respect!
  13. We get death threats daily from both students and staff, no one here is open to change, and the staffs are as bad if not worse than the kids for using dodgy websites, such as the proxy bypass sites etc. There is just no way we can win right now, since BSF, we have slightly more power and control, such as come Sept, all staff are being sent on an ECDL course as some have trouble with a mouse. Hopefully they will have a little more appreciation for us then!
  14. We will not be touching vista for a minimum of 2 years until the R&D project is completed for any possible security constraints etc. We changed to XP in 2004. If and when we do use vista it will most probably be business, without media player etc for basic user interaction.

  19. We had a similar issue like a year or so ago, our LEA has a forensics team and they managed to crack it with there toys! I would imagine that you LEA would have one too, they usually come under the heading of ICT Security Officer of computer crime dept etc. All the best
  20. Just to let everyone know, i have disco0vered it, yay :!:  If anyone still has any ideas on how to not display the URL, ideas are still welcome on that.
  21. Hi all, We currently use an in house ISA server with a destination set created which blocks  certain websites. This points all blocked sites to the page of College.lea.sch.uk/blcoked.htm. We would like to change where this points to or even better remove the url from appearing the address bar at all. Is anyone aware of how this can be done or can it only be done when actually setting up and configuring the destination set origionally :?: If there is a way of just telling that page not to display the URL that most probably would be best as i presume we can just edit the html script etc. I have included a print screen of the ISA server and the destination set below. All ideas welcome :!:
  22. Check this link from a discussion earlier this week. http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=97706#97706
  23. We will support anything which we speced up, for example, a teacher decided they wanted a printer for their classroom, so decided to go to a well known super market with a blue and red logo and buy a cheap £25 one. Then expected us to install it! We reserve the right to refuse as 1) we didn't spec it 2) we didn't even know about it 3) it's wasn't laser and 4) under BSF there is a ratio of a 6 PC's to one high performance laser printer. It then got returned somewhat promptly. Teachers!!!
  24. Thanks Mark, I will get on to them later this morning once the password resets have calmed down! I will let you know the end result!
