  1. All website filtering is controlled through the LEA, however we do use the on site ISA for major URLS that cannot wait a week for the LEA to get around to it. The thing is, we don’t use any third party software, I used to use ranger, but then came BSF, we are using MS Group polices from Server 2003 AD with a separate proxy which for some reason the last NM set up on a workgroup, this will change in time, however we have more pressing matters at present.
  2. Hi all, Does anyone know how to block Google chat for students, however leave it active for staff? I am aware of how to block GChat as a whole and leave the standard Gmail active, however my college needs to block it for the kids but not the staff (ironic, I know!) I have checked out the following link, from GChat, however this just blocks it for everyone: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=34330&query=disable&topic=&type=f&ctx=search The problem I face is that everyone goes through the same proxy server with the same IP Address Route. I have considered setting up a new scope etc that will differ between staff and students, but I just wondered if anyone had any further ideas for this.
  3. Make a template out of some thin sheet wood or something and tell them to keep to that.
  4. You'd trust them with sharp tools? oOf course not, but if your an over-sunscribed school, it would be one way to get the numebers down. Most of them would probably even supply there own 'sharp tools'!
  5. That's what 6th formers are for! Totally agree, or kids in detention. Could you not give them to your Design & Technology Dept and get them to do it.
  6. Try a company called Yorkshire Pruchasing. http://ypo.co.uk/ But if you are wanting fitted stuff (Which is more common for dedicated ICT suites) i would speak to your LEA for any preferred suppliers etc. Thats what we do, or even your facilities personell.
  7. This is just as important as knowing IT (well nearly as important) Customer service in general.
  8. Just being there should be enough!
  9. Under BSF we have time sheets, our BSFer is the LEA who won the contract, however we also operate on a flexi time basis, which makes everything fit nicely.
  10. I agree with the eggmaster too, I have 1st hand experiences with his interview techniques! I would suggest such questions as 'What is the difference between TCP/IP, IPX/SPX and NetBios/NetBeui'. Also, try changing the keys around on the keyboard and get them to re-arrange them in the correct order, just like what the kids would normally do in a school environment. I have had a 45 min written exam in one of my interviews as well as a test inc the above scenarios as well as being given a bunch of cables and being asked to tell what the differences are, such as EIA/TIA standards for cat5e etc. Another one was where there were MS office icons missing from the programs menu and links failed, what would you do etc. They could copy them back from the program files, run a repair from the CD in case their are any underlying issues or depending on time etc, re-ghost the machine with a ghost cast image that from experience only takes 15 mins inc config time. I hope that’s some food for thought for ya.

    Recover Word Doc

If you cannot get it back, at least once the story of losing 'an important document' gets around your capus, you shouldn't have many other instances of this occuring with anyone else. Look, theres always a postive side! I might start a rumour here of something like that happen, that way, it should never happen for real in the first place. ideas, ideas, ideas...
  12. We never get a chance to clean our stuff; it's in and nicked the same day. We have found Flash multi purposes surface wipes do a fantastic on Promethean and SMART boards, we sometimes give the keyboards and mice a once over with some anti-bacterial wipes given some of the kids here, and that seems to do the trick nicely, plus all of our equipment is black Dell, so you can't see the muck anyway! YAY! With regards to the cleaners, we have SFF machines, the cleaners just clean the surfaces where the kids sit, however when they dust the surfaces, it totally knacks up the optical mice as the optics go haywire and we either have to re-wash the surfaces again, (Flash does the job again nicely) or put a piece of paper under neath the mouse, given that the kids and staff acquired all of the mouse mats! We also have a procedure where we each carry Anti-bacterial hand gel when where in contact from computer to computer, user to user and where things are really bad, disposable gloves. As at my place, you really don’t know what your gonna come across. It’s a case of ‘Don’t put your hands where your eyes cant see!’
  13. We a combination of IDNS (Infomration Data Network Supplies) and United Carlton, both of these companies cover upon and down the UK. 16. Sorry, brain isn't working yet, whats that then?
  17. Google it...My line managers swear by it!
  18. Has anyone heard of a supplier called AC's PC's, I found them a few weeks back and have placed a few orders with them and they seem quite reasonable with there pricing and up to now there delivery and products has been second to none. I just wondered if anyone else had used them and if so, what’s your experiences bee like. I found they also had some useful links and downloads too, although there downloads page has been down for a day or two. This is where I found them: http://acspcs.net.tf/
  19. MS XP Pro SP2 and Office 2003 has all the patches that it requires following an extensive Reasearch & Development programme through my team and the LEA, the ghost image is used across the LEA and only affects one or two areas at different times.
  20. It's definately not that, Any other MS or third party application can print fine, this affects all printers that we have (Epson, Lexmark and HP)both when printing through the print server (ie across the network) and locally via TCP/IP.
  21. Like said above, yes it probably will work, but WHY?!?! I personally would buy one, they come in various lengths and if you want any connection to be reliable and a NETwork as appose to a NOTwork, i would buy one, or aquire one from a local cable installer who your good pals with. http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/store/4/cat/Cables-and-Tools
  22. How about these, they are PC based as appose to PPC based though. It's amazing what you remove from the kids accounts. I will update with any other useful URL's. Does anyone know if there is a forum already active for utilities etc, i have a few which people may be interested in as well as useful links. golf.xls sonic.xls

  25. We too go along the road of no AUP - No login. However certain management members feel it is there right to over rule this and often call in to overrule us in front of the new students. This sept is gonna be different though. They just do not realise that they are potentially putting students at risk from the internet etc and their own network infrastructure by not having a policy in place which they can fall back on in the event of the AUP rules being broken etc. NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
