In a similar situation to you: we have a dedicated suite of PC's (these are 4 years old iirc with an upgrade in RAM) these have a local partition exposed to the user which contains sample files and is also used if they are re-encoding files. The main application they use is Cubase SE3 and Sibelius 4 with some USB MIDI devices and input devices, the nice thing about SE3 is you can save hardware templates which the user can preload and it means they dont have to worry about setting it up each time. which is a bonus if the staff arent comfortable with configuring the program. none of us here are "music" software experts we can confirm if the hardware is working and can get sound in and out of the application, thats as far as we can take it. We have worked with the Music staff to create the templates based around they are doing it hasnt been without its problems but on the whole works well. Biggest problem we did face was damage to midi leads from the keyboard to the dedicated midi sound card(a big must as the onboard sound cards on most PC's is too high a latency to be useable) so we ditched the leads and invested in some Alesis USB keyboards which have worked really well as they work so much easier than having to troubleshoot iffy leads. If the music staff just expect it to work then they are going to need to spend some time working with you building templates or tweaking the computers,this was the biggest hurdle we faced as they didnt get that at first.

DNS issue? are the profiles for the users very large. is there a difference if they have logged onto the pc before? (depending on how the profile is stored on the pc) i did come accross and odity with Mcafee Version 8.7 with vista which needed you to turn off the NLA (network location awareness) Service or it would sit on the login screen even on a stand alone laptop.

why not have another no server/server dealing with your antivirus needs. Havent used RM antivirus products but anything which is scaning in realtime is going to give you a reasonable load on the CPU. Is it just scanning the home dir's on the server or the clients as well by monitoring them. A nightly scan of user folders etc will trap most stuff lurking in home dir's, usb memory sticks are another matter but if an area is infected we have rolled out AV to specific area's and sorted the problem. have you contacted RM?

Hi all, anyone have any suggestion/recommendation for a narrow depth rack server suitable for the smaller floor standing cabs with a depth of 700mm-800mm? as a school we support has limited space and a larger more server orientated rack isnt really suitable.# cheers

Printers wont appear in device manager: the ports will IE USB LPT1 etc. if its installed correctly should be under Control Panel -> printers and hardware.

is it actually connected via USB? might be that the port is being reset at the time of install? or a user is changing the properties. i wouldnt expect it to appear in the system device manger but should appear in the printers section from control panel. If you are using a local/TCP/IP port to print to it have you got conflicting ports IE one port pointing to two printers or visa versa as ive has this cause oddities

running a couple of suites in school with Novatech pc's. reliable kit (a few HDD's went pop) but nothing major good turnaround on warranty etc.

echoey voice might also be a sound effect which the realtek software can put on inputs had something like this before on realtek audio pc's but if everything is standard i doubt it is this

are you boosting the mic signal in the sound driver software as well and Audacity as it might be you are "overdriving" the signal and creating the hiss.

i would be looking at a hardware RAID system myself as a software RAID is going to put additional load on the CPU etc of the server. Using seperate disk or array for your OS and moodle? although 70 users on at one time isnt going to need a massively powerful server to achieve good results, id look at a PHP accelerator which will improve performance.

this size of database possibly is down to how it is logging all the changes to the DB, i think if you have it logging all transactions the size of the DB gets massive. i can look at how i have setup the SQL2005 instance if you like? i dont use MLS connect as at the time we were having issues with SIMS so have been importing new users via CSV a bit fiddly but works ok.

for the LIC file could you not copy this to the "all users\app data" / default user\app data. so when the app looks for the LIC it is already there?

using ubuntu server 11 at home with mdadm for a mirrored 320GB array, after swearing at the disk manager once it was working it has been spot on. found HOWTO: Linux Software Raid using mdadm - Ubuntu Forums helpful. there was another guide as well but i cant find the link oops. all running on a VIA C7 with a gig or so of ram, large data transfers see I/O CPU usage at around 50% (with just me using it) found Webmin a nice tool for managing it all as well

whats the error when it boots? does it just blue screen etc. hard drive mode set wrong in the bios (so the image was made on a laptop which had the SATA mode set to IDE, but the others are in AHCI mode?) partition not set to active?

WD are in the are/have aquired hitachi, im a fan of WD drives as not had a major failure which has caused any data lose. i think in the next few years there will just be WD and Seagate left in the consumer mechanical drive market

might be worth checking if there is an option in clonezilla to make full use of avaliable space (norton ghost for example allows this) so you wont need to manually resize partitions after imaging

is gparted showing any unallocated space on the new drive? id suggest it hasnt mounted/expanded /SDA1

how is the sync set up are you using Echo Synchronise or contribute if the person is editing the right folder id use synchronise, as echo only works left to right and it sounds like you are going to want to work both ways? only recently being using synctoy and the contribute doesnt appear to set any readonly attributes but them iam backing up from a PC to a PC over a network share with the same user name and passwords

most likely a dumb question but where do i get access to the SupportNet Documentation, it is part of the School Comms system which is searchable?
