Howdy, with the recent snow closures, our inability to mass text parents about the school opening has become apparent. Our website and Moodle did stirling work in keeping folks updated (and setting work for kids ha ha!), but one of our staff here is a parent of a child at another school, and she received daily texts to announce the closures, neat idea. Does anyone have a decent working system in place, how does it integrate with your MIS (if at all). Cheers Nick

Hi guys I've seen the other posts but they don't seem to quite add up to me. I'm trying to image a load of Lenovos using Ghost 9 and a .v2i image file. It's working well using the Ghost CD but it's slow and I've got 130 of these things to do. I want a usb stick to boot the Lenovo into the recovery environment, allowing me to load the ghosted image on another usb stick. I don't use the PXE boot or Ghostcast. Is this possible. How? I've followed one guide to copy the /I386 folder across into a bootable usb and put two of the files in the root, but it comes up with no os found. Cheers Nick

Hi all, I'm trying to build 130 of these before January, but I can't find the DOS drivers to make a CC3 build disk anywhere. I really don't fancy ghosting them all and then using RM Smartclient. Can anybody point me in the right direction? According to the spec the chip is the Realtek RTL8103. Spent the last hour and a half trying to get a working build disk :-( Cheers Nick

We installed Physics, Chem and Bio via a package, which failed to find any of the videos/flash stuff...doc's worked fine...finally had to manually install just one of them, to get the others to work. Definitely to do with the registration of .dlls on the machine.

Have tried adjusting the GP for a new test user in the RMMC but it just doesn't work!! Am able to show/hide all tabs under Internet Options apart from Privacy and Connections...even though I've allowed them.... Any ideas

Hi there Major headache heading my way. I've got network-build netbooks bought/owned by the pupils. Each pupil is a privileged user of their own machine, in order to be able to edit the proxy settings in IE when they go home. However, i'm seeing more and more alerts for conficker etc coming from .exes in their temp internet folders... Is there a way I can edit the priveged user to stop .exes from being run on the machines and still allow them to edit the proxy settings in IE. I want to try and lock down these machines as much as possible, but can see I'm going to struggle as it's "their" machine....

We've got 167 Lenovo ideaPads for 5 Y7 classes. They have purchased themselves, but we put a network build on it. The main issue I have is anti-virus/malware because they are self purchased, the kids get to take them home and therefore need to be priviledged users on the machine (to change the proxy settings) ..obviously being able to install what they like at home... They all have our network av on them but I'm getting alerts constantly... Also problematic are logon times, because we don't have managed wireless yet, I've installed extra APs with success in some classrooms, but less effect in others. Synchronising files seems to be an issue as well, when I followed the procedure it worked...but in the hands of 11 yr olds..it seems not to..go figure.. Finally, despite the rebuild time being fairly short, I seem to get more than I thought I would...most of which are just looping round the old Start Windows normally.. The network build unfortunately is actually a lot more than it needs to be, need to sort this out next summer and trim it down to bare minimum

Hi guys Bit of a procedural question. I've been asked to change our school wide e-mail addresses from a .sch.uk domain to a .org.uk. Our mail server is hosted internally. We have the new domain registered via BT (still trying to get into the account to see what I can do there..). Presumably I need to change the SMTP settings on the mail server, and adjust the DNS entries for the old domain on our DCs. What else..How do I make sure it all filters down to the users outlook settings..a GPO? Can anyone provide a brief pointer to the steps I need to follow? How hard is it? How long will it take me. Check out the Shure e2c's...couple of yrs old now, but on a flight to New York on a plane with loud engines AND a b***** screaming baby next to me I couldn't hear anything but the tunes I was listening to...bliss... bottom end leaves a fair bit to be desired, but for cutting out external noise, these are pretty good, use the orange foam buds as opposed to the black plastic ones.

Ok chaps, we're hosting a Moodle on site, and when I'm at home it's nice and fast and usable.. when i'm in school watching classes use it, it's deathly slow. we've got an ISA server which all traffic goes through, despite the fact the moodle server is on the network, I think requests to and from the moodle server are going to the router to come back in again is there any optimisation stuff to make it run faster or better set up methods i.e. when in school, get it locally rather than go out to come back in. cheers Nick

We've got 170 new Lenovo ThinkPads to deploy a customised CC3 build to... In the event of not being able to find a dos driver for the network card and then using the standard route of a build disk, anybody got any ideas for deploying the build without having to resort to manually installing XP Pro and then converting it to a CC3 workstation via makecc3.... Grrr...it was a mapped drive thing...set the new one up as S when the old one was G....changed the S to G (like Chain Letters) and it's fine...I did re-run simsinst with S instead but it didn't like it...

Moved SIMS from an old server to a brand new one today..sims runs fine on this server but same issue Reason 0 on workstations. Tried all of the KB suggestions...plus the ones on here, anybody got any more advice... Cheers

Might have been covered before, but I can't find it... We've got a set of supply teacher network accounts, that I want to change the password for on a daily basis according to a predetermind list of passwords in a txt, or xls file. Can I do this automatically using VBS, can anyone give me some hints about how to read the password from the file, match it to corresponding date and set the password to a bunch of users. Ta Nick

Yep, thanks for that. This is the intermediary step that we might take, the LEA security team aren't happy with us NAT'ing permanently, but for the time being it might be the best and easiest option. Thanks for your advice.

Hi all, We're switching broadband supplier to our LEA, they want us to re-IP our network according to a range they will dish out to us. I know this is where DHCP comes into it's own but I concerned about our static addresses and the effect it will have on our DC's and the procedure which you should follow to do this. Has anyone out there successfully done this. Where's the pitfalls. We're also looking at temporarily protecting our internal IP range by using an ISA server to go to the LEA switch. Thoughts? Suggestions? Condemnations? Ta Nick
