  1. Hi guys, My job is now up for grabs, I'm moving on to a support role at a well known Premiership football club. Result! Here's the job spec and details. http://tinyurl.com/anna2qt Any questions just ask! Ta Nick
  2. What format do you have the SQL database in from restore, is it mdf and ldf or .bak? You can use Server Management Studio to restore a backup of SQL dbs quite easily providing you have the correct credentials,
  3. Hi all, We have a supply teacher account whose password is changed on a daily basis. Is there any way I can automate this using powershell. 1. look up "today's" password in an xml,csv or similar file 2. set it to a variable 3. set the variable to a specific user's account password I think I've found the command for 3, but how can I achieve 1 and 2? Nick
  4. Thanks. It's dban I''m running currently and it looks like 40 min for 232gb hdd. most of our machines are about 40 - 100gb so this might be the best way forward. cheers Nick
  5. Hi all, We're leaving our current site this summer and selling off our ICT estate. I need a bootable USB tool to quickly wipe the hard drive contents. The ones I've found seem to want to take between an hour and three and half hours for a "fast" 1 pass, copywipe, dbn, killdisk. Any faster solutions out there. I really don't want to spent any large amount of time doing this. I suppose other option is to get 30 sticks and a room all in one bit go. cheers Nick
  6. Thank you. RM and cleaners now on the case.
  7. They should all shut off at 8.30 and I believe they do, because we do package installs of an afternoon which get installed the morning after. @Chris_ It was bought in 2006... @cpjitservices My best guess would be something on the motherboard has blown, and sparked, or the power supply has given up the ghost, or as once before, the usb ports on the front have become bent in on themselves by students, and shorted the front circuit board. RM techie once told me about such an instance in the past.
  8. I asked RM this morning, we have hardware support on them, but they said this kind of thing isn't covered.... Precise time? elementary my dear Turpie, the lost switch had some ruckus managed wireless APs on it, and we get an email when they drop off the network.
  9. Amazing, the fire was contained to just that desk, lost a switch to this as well, smoke and residue everywh. Everything else *looks* alright, but not going back in until the industrial cleaners have sorted it.
  10. Anyone got any ideas why I can't get windows working on this machine. I've tried turning it on and off... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1336924/fire.jpg Found this morning. We reckon it happened around midnight last night somehow....
  11. Hello, just found this forum. Excellent! We've got two AV-3016 with buzzing inside and crackling audio. Anyone know where I can take them in Manchester area to get fixed? Thanks Nick
  12. hiall, Hope you're all well. been ages since i've been on here, so apologies. Things have been running smoothly until now!! In two IT suites next to each other, some users start to use Dreamweaver, then the LAN starts to stall in those rooms, file accesses are slow and it stutters. they come off dreamweaver and it goes. I've done a network packet trace and can't find anything of any interest..though I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for. There are lots of ARP requests, but it doesn't look out of the ordinary and a fair few SMB packets, but that was me, testing out the access performance of the shares. can't find any traffic related specifically to dreamweaver or to specific machines with excessive packets, so a bit baffled. the only thing I am yet to prove is my introduction of a virtual web server running MVA on VMware, used to host sites that the pupils create in dreamweaver. Dreamweaver connects to this machne to transfer files. but this was setup months ago and it's been fine in the early stages. doesn't seem to be much traffic in the capture, going to and from this machine. any ideas about how I can troubleshoot this?
  13. Sorted. The other network card wasn't disabled (we swapped it over, during summer, because it became faulty). It was "cable unplugged" status. Disabling it seems to have done the trick.
  14. New year, new problems..harumph. The FRDC is intermittently losing the default gateway value (in ipconfig /all), but it's still there in the GUI dialog. Repairing the connection fixes it. This is impacting on DNS and subsequently our SMTP. Any ideas? Faulty NIC?
  15. Oops that was just a typo. I did notice the same typo on a few of the support articles...maybe it's something that happens on the clipboard.. Anyways..found a different way of achieving the same thing. Basically created a WMP playlist (which powerpoint does open ok) for each and every video. bit of a ballache but it's all done and working now. cheers!
  16. We've got powerpoints with hyperlinks to wmv files in them. The file association on all our machines for wmv is vlc, yet clicking on it within the powerpoint doesn't launch it. Change the file association manually to WMP and it's fine. So the job is to change the association on all machines...this is what i've tried Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.w mv] "Application"="wmplayer.exe" Reg fragment as above allocated to Global workstation settings. no change Reg fragment as above allocated to machine type. no change reg fragment as above allocated to specific user type. no change. reallocated wmp to a machine. no change Built a package with just the reg change in, and allocated it to a workstation. no change. Any more ideas. I've followed the TEC article to the t and its just ignoring the reg change.
  17. Acid Express looks ok, if only it didn't have a pesky Sony registration form... ACIDplanet.com: Free Downloads: ACID Xpress
  18. Hi all, music teacher would like to do a film score type project next year, using a short clip of film and a bit of audio software. Any suggestions? I've tried building Acid onto the cc3 but it's failing all over the shop.

    Garageband loops

Cheers guys. I've found the .pkg file with the additional loops in, on the install disc. Going to install it manually tomorrow, as can't get ARD on my laptop to install the packages (it's snow and the clients are leopard, ARD is 3.3.2 on my lappy, but 3.2.1 on the clients), meaning an upgrade for the ard client requires an os update first. Copying files works fine, and remote desktop works before it realises it's out of date! Cheers for your help anyway. Starting to get my head round this mac admin stuff!

    Garageband loops

I think they are the ones Sted is talking about, because they are not on any machines, but they are listed in the loop library. Still confused as to how I use ARD to deploy them all at the same time, can you explain this bit?

    Garageband loops

Hi all, We've got Garageband on a suite of macs, some of the loops aren't available and it prompts you to download them on the workstation. How can I get them on all machines without having to do this one by one. The way I thought it worked was that the server gets all the updates and then dishes them out, but it appears not. Any ideas?

    Mac time and dns?

They get their time from the frdc, using it's name rather than ip.

    Mac time and dns?

Hi all, This is probably similar to http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mac/51069-mac-will-not-log-3.html but wondered if a more concise route to solving my problem exists. We have Leopard clients and a Tiger server. CC3, so bootcamped with a windows cc3 build. When booted to leopard, the workstation time is forward by an hour, and although it has an ip address, no record for the machine appears in dns (a record for that ip is present for the windows name of the machine)..until I go into Time and Date settings and the time adjusts itself, I renewed the ip) and then voila! a dns record appears. This fixes the issue until tomorrow, when the machines are re-booted. We recently changed the dns scavenging period to 7 days, after troubleshooting our faulty router issues, but I'm seeing on posts here that when you have macs, you should set this to 1 day? Is the time issue being caused by DNS, or vice versa? Thanks Nick
  24. Yeah, I've created a new GAL just for the all students group, but outlook still won't connect the newby accounts mailboxes for them in Outlook 2003 on the network. How long does it normally take for outlook to update this stuff, I read that the offline address book only updates once a day? will this affect it? Grrr.. OWA still brings up staff if you search for mr or mrs...
  25. Can this work alongside Exchange 2003 somehow? Quite liked GFI Mail Essentials effectiveness, but couldn't get the budget for it.
