Probably addressed (guffaw) many times before. We have a global address list, which until last week, all the kids had access to. I've followed the RM tech article TEC969366 to add a Deny permission for the students group to be able to access the address lists, however when noobs log in (just testing the new year 7 accounts) or students after a profile reset, outlook now can't access the gal to connect to their mailboxes. harrumph. how can I get round this? We currently don't want kids to see any members of the list, or at least only their peers. All users have to be on a global address list All users are on the default GAL, but I've denied Students access to it. Yet it looks like they need this permission when first setting up their mailboxes. Any ideas? How do you lot out in edugeekland manage the GAL.

Awesome!! Done it with wget as suggested! Thanks! Took a bit of fiddling with $date and $time, as it didn't like those two straight off.. Created a batch file with the following in set tag=%date:~-4,4%%date:~7,2%%date:~4,2%-%time:~0,2%%time:~3,2%%time:~6,2% wget http://192.168.1.60/snapshot.jpg?account=admin?password=password -O 1.jpg ren 1.jpg %tag%.jpg This grabs the photo, and renames it to have a timestamp in the filename, in the correct order for sorting files. You might be able to skip the last step and use %tag%.jpg in the wget...haven't tried it. Ta!!! Nick

Finally got to the bottom of the problem today. First a history lesson.. Our Internet connection died two weeks ago, the ATM circuit had gone, but it took a week to resolve. In the meantime, our internet provider sent us a replacement router as a troubleshooting step. The media converter that we use to link the segment which holds this router, went down on Friday, preventing me from testing the only fibre link I hadn't ruled out, leading me to believe it was the core switch on the blink (which I still believe it is but only on port 3, now inactive on the network) This replacement router was the cause of the ten/twenty minute workstation connectivity issue. How? Why? I don't yet know, but after 6 and a bit hours of repairing the link and fault finding today, we pulled the router out of the network and the issues went (even with the router connected to the network switch, but the ADSL line removed from the router, the issue persisted). Network connectivity now totally restored and stable across the site. Internet speed still slow, but that will be in the hands of our provider first thing tomorrow. I'm claiming this as a victory! You were spot on with this btw, it had the old subnet address, before we changed it to get a bigger ip range.

Ok, indeed 10.15.80.16 was correct, it was a laptop I was using to run Wireshark and connect to the switch through the console port. Not sure quite why that was failing..but... Set up servers again on spare switch, put machines on, 2nd and 3rd switch on, and only having one spare fibre port to work with, went through each of the fibre connections (going to the rest of the site), left each one on for thirty minutes and the pings and connections didn't drop once, the only one i can't be sure of is a link which appears to have broken this afternoon (it never rains but it pours eh?!) we had it up and running this morning fine, but this afternoon there's no activity on it. The annoying thing is this is the one with the router on, the router that has been off for the past week because of BT's ineptitude...grrrrr... So...in short 99% sure it's the core switch dying, particularly on port 3 (the fibre and module going into that port was absolutely fine). ordered a new switch for delivery tomorrow, stick it in on sunday with the cabling dude checking out the faulty link to the router's switch and should be cool for monday morning. not out of the woods yet, but thanks one and all for your excellent advice and help in this, the worst week of my professional life!! Cheers for now. I'll update on Sunday. Some progress this morning. I've managed to get onto the switch via the console port and get the IP etc. Except it's on an old subnet, we changed the subnet a few years ago to increase our ip range. I manually re-confiugured it to the new subnet, and could connect fine in a web browser on a workstation. Got the password so that's ok. On Hyperterminal it came up with the message arptew failed on a0f5010. Who can tell me what IP this is?! hex conversion! On the web config, I found STP was enabled on the switch and every port, but on fibre port 3, the spanning tree stats were off the scale. I reset the switch, and just looked at the stats again. All ports apart from 3 are still at zero, port 3 is increasing. the stats were STP BPDUs transmitted 1156 STP BPDUs received 3 Presumably it's a loop on this fibre, or the port 3 on the switch is foobared. I note that on port 5, there is activity light on the switch with the others, but the light next to the port is out, and the web config shows that it's out.

Er...that would be me. This switch apparently pre-dates at least two of my predecessors in this job. There's no support contract. Will take a look see. Thanks any suggestions for getting it's IP discovered. I've gone through literally every address in dhcp leases, so it must be configured with a static or nowt. Just reading up about cli commands...ah well, all good for the CV! Nick

It does have the console port on it, but I would have no clue how to go about connecting etc. Any advice on this greatfully received. Basically, tonights efforts have resulted in.. We've setup the servers, second and third switches and test workstations on a spare switch which has proved to be stable, unfortunately this has no fibre ports so I can't rule out the possibility that whatever is causing the problem coming from the 5 fibre links we have to the rest of the site. But at least it's down to the fibre or the core switch. Definitely not the second or third switches in the server room cab or something on them. Tomorrow I'm going to try to rule out individual fibres out one at a time adding them to the spare switch, using a single media converter. If each prove to be stable, then it's either the core switch or a combination of the fibres. Will investigate the packet software etc. Did try Wireshark on me Mac, but it couldn't find the nic and I didn't feel like spending hours to sort that out. Cheers! Nick

OK, major nightmare happening. Half the machines on the cc3 network can't see the dc's. Ping t tests fall over after exactly ten minutes, removing the lead and reinserting sets it going again. Across the entire site, I have machines in the same room, some which can ping and see the dc's, somewhich can't. So I don't think it's a local switch problem. We've tried to eliminate loopback by visiting each and every point and cable in the whole school, to no avail. One machine connected directly to the core, which the dc's are on, ping to the dc's fail after ten minutes A second machine connected to a switch which is connected to the core, ping to the dc's fail after ten minutes A third machine, at the end of a fibre link across the site, does exactly the same. We've double checked dns, no issues, got RM to check the dc's over, no problems. Has to be a core switch falling over or an unfound lookback, right? I'm running out of things to look at now, Any advice greatly received! Add this to the fact that a certain telecoms company trashed our ATM link for our ADSL for a week, and I'm lovin' life at the minute..... Nick

Very very strange thing all of a sudden Rebuilding cc3 machines works in the most part, (joins domain, security, correct packages etc) Except it's not doing certain things, like gp isn't applying at some stage !. Wallpaper and bitmaps not applying correctly 2. Windows firewall policy not applying 3. Offline files enabled (should be disabled for synchronise to work) 4. and windows seems to be registered to "Station Rebuild: Windows XP RM) I've done the following Reset setup profile, checked ini, no failures on system packages health checked packages on server and locations in rmmc. tried rebuilding into package build location, tried changing workstation type. rebuilt with new name rebuilt different machine and different location, same problem, I've tried a gp update /force and normally in the shell, it will prompt you to reboot. It doesn't do this anymore. It just says user policy refresh has completed, computer policy has completed. Grr. any suggestions?!

Not sure why, but I can't seem to find any resources or posts about people being able to successfully do Windows 7 builds on a CC3. Anyone had success with this or is it a don't even bother one? Cheers

Hi all, New school being built shortly and I'm looking for some software to capture hourly (or less frequently) pics of the site to eventually make a time lapse video. We've got a bunch of unused Rimax ip cam's which you can access a snapshot jpg via http directly, but after looking at 10+ different programs none of them do it that nicely or without stamping their logo on it. would prefer not to cough up for it, as I'm sure someone somewhere has written a decent app to pull a capture every hour off an ip based cam, just cant find one! any suggestions?

Condenser mics are the best for this kind of stuff, but you need one that does omnidirectional or figure of 8 polar pickup pattern so it picks up both sides, unless you position it above the two people and face it down...should pick up enough. much better when they are directing straight at the diaphram. Trouble with condensers is that they require 48v phnatom power..however, the samson c01u (usb condensor) should do the trick pretty well...other than than, a behringer b1 with a small mixer/mic pre-amp is good enough. your usual tandy (remember them) mics just won't pick up a normal conversation even if its a few feet away.

You mean something else on the network has taken the same ip as the router? I'm unable to ping that ip when the router is plugged into the switch nor unplugged.

Having a strange problem, our adsl router is set up on a static ip, has been since time began. this morning however the connection was playing up, no-one could get internet or email. I go in and found the broadband connection absolutely fine when a single machine connected to the router, as soon as I plug it back into the network (one dc, one pro curve switch), I can't access the router from the ip, can't ping it. nada. On top of this printers have been intermittently accessible as well as file shares. I plugged the router straight into the only spare hub (!) I had, plugged the dc in and hey presto worked perfectly. Am i right in deciding the procurve switch is coughing it's last. Seems strange that it's fine one minute and throwing stuff out the next, or in the case of the router, not even allowing it on.

Panic over..My fault, of course. This morning I'd found some spurious user names fdghdfjgdfh fdsjkhfdsf fedfsdfds or something along those lines in AD and decided to disable those accounts. Turns out they are the share controllers.. Why call them names like that though? What purpose does it serve? Nick ..back to microsoft licensing head scratching...

All the users in the RMMC (cc3) have suddenly disappeared! Still all in AD, phew. But under the frdc and replica, there is nothing (Students, Staff, Non Teaching) etc anyone seen this? RM suggest repairing location chooser, but it doesn't work. Nick

Ok, so new web hosts, with a new domain. I'm pointing our old domain's ( co.uk ) www dns record to the new host ( .org.uk). all works fine, with the exception of two php files, which when browsing the site using the old domain address (.co.uk) gives a 403 error, which I can see is access denied (normally occurring as random browsing on sites is denied) Why is it denying access when it's reading the rest of the site ok? Is it because it's retaining the .co.uk in the address bar and therefore thinking it's at .co.uk when actually reading the .org.uk. Would using forwarding instead of changing the dns records fix this? Cheers Nick

Yes, they've all got a CC3 build on them, meaning machines run gp updates, package allocations (if any) authentication and then synchronisation with the sync folder on the network. Admittedly some students (despite being told to the contrary) have over 50mb in their sync folder which doesn't help matters.. Once one, they are fine at browsing, file access etc..it's just getting the log on and sync process faster.

Sorry, should also mention, we're attempting to have 30 11g clients all connecting in one class, on a rm cc3 build......log on and sync times are the two issues we're trying to resolve.

Those who have Ruckus in, what are you plugging the APs into, 100meg or 1gig. We have a gig fibre backbone, but only 100 meg to desktop in the majority of the places..only a few spare gig points. I'm concerned about the performance we'll see from this, on our aging network, it not being able to show off ruckus to it's best.
