AWESOME! advice here doesn't get any better! your advice fixed my issue. why is SIMS such an inconsistent and devilish beast to deal with...really frustrates me at times.. thanks for your help! it SEEMS to have worked...tomorrow morning is the pudding proving i guess....

Hi there As it was the weekend, I thought lets kick off the SIMS migration remotely. I'm currently half way through it and it was going swimmingly until when the SQL2005migration utility asks me for an sa password. None of us know it so we guessed it as blank. This prompts us for a database name BUT the list is empty...so I thought, ok maybe wrong password, I've since changed the sa password ...to an obvious choice..for now...and still the list is empty. Capita posted the following, vague instructions KB72251 - No database appearing in the dropdown box - Running the SIMS SQL Migration Utility -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Created 07/08/2007 Last Updated 07/08/2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Affected Products SIMS .net Installation & Upgrade -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes When running the Migration utility after entering the SA username and password Click Connect There is no database appearing in the drop down box. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advice Please close the Migration tool and then re-run the exe. If the database still does not appear then you will need to do the following Stop the SQL Server Copy the SIMS.mdf and SIMS.ldf Re-start the SQL Server Remove SQL Server via Add / Remove programs Re-name the Microsoft Sql Server folder to Microsoft SQL Server old (If there is more than one instance of SQL 2000 on the machine then you will need to re-name the MSSQL$SIMS folder to MSSQL$SIMSold) Install a new instance of SQL 2000 Does this look advisable...I REALLY don't want to screw up SIMS for now Any advice greatly appreciated Nick

Anyone had the cast iron unmentionables to do the SQL migration yet. I think everything is in place (just a few issues with RMs Portal PLus to sort out first).....I just don't want to break SIMS. Anyone have an idea how long it will take? Thanks Nick

OK, so I thought around the problem and reckoned if I could install it locally on maybe 5 machines and copy the CD so that each machine would run it..that would work.... Wrong! Install it as administrator, it works, login as someone else, it doesn't. So I thought it's a permissions issue... I gave my test login full access to the program files directory where all the program's files are kept. Nada. I guess it's a quirk of the software. I just can't admit defeat on this cheap piece of software!

Guys Thanks for your help. still can't get it working and I feel it's down to the software itself rather than the processes you have suggested. Got a reply from their support team who say that GSP software have issues with drive letters higher than N: (for some reason!) and asked to me install it on a drive lower/before N:......never mind! Thanks again anyway. I think I'll look for a clipart collection which advertises network compatibility. Nick

I think I've tried both ways. Both with the same result. The software in itself is fine, but it can't see the clipart collection on drive U: Ta, will try that now.

But how will the package know to load the image onto U. I thought this is what you use the CD Rom Manager and db for. Will give it a spin! Thanks

I used Butuz's suggestion of using the App Wizard to manage a Multimedia title. Strange thing is that it's not even appearing in the CD ROM Manager, despite during the above process it prompted me for details to enter into the db. Should I use this order... 1. make the image 2. mount it onto the U 3. start the 1st scan 4. run the install 5. start the 2nd scan

Mm doesn't quite work. Image was created fine, package was dropped ok, but it says it can't find any Collections of clipart despite the CD image being loaded onto U: Any ideas, apart from this being an unreasonable stubborn piece of software

Since you've all be on the ball this morning...I'll try another issue I'm having. We have a Clipart CD, which runs an install program to dump it's browser program in Program Files, yet leaves all the clipart on the CD. I want to allocate this to a certain room only. So we built a package and of course it doesn't work without the CD in the drive, so we made a VC4 image on the V: drive and entered it into the CD-ROM Manager Access database. Strange this is, this works on packagebuild machine, but not on any other machine. On my second test machine, the CD image gets loaded to U:, but the browser can't find any collections of clipart. Anyone see a problem like this or found a solution? Nick

Thanks. Would it be using SIMSINST or SIMSApplicationSetup. I don't understand which is used. Does SIMSINST call SIMSApplicationSetup? Regards Nick

This is happening on a select few machines!! Headache! Could it be an old version of ActiveX or something like that?

Morning chaps, Performed Sept release upgrade on Friday night and came in this morning to find that Exams officer can't get into the Examinations module. It comes up with a dialog box for "Trusted User" or "SQL Server User", trusted user asks for no u/name and pass and gives the error messgae "ActiveX component can't create object". Similarly choosing SQL Server User and logging in with SIMS.net credentials does the same. I think it must be to do with the newly added Windows Authentication "feature", but we have chosen not to use this and therefore not touched connect.ini. Can anyone help. Exams data needed to be done this week!!! :-( Nick

I've had nothing but trouble with the WASP stuff. We got the PDA/Scanner, Barcode Printer and server software. The printer's got issues, the software won't run properly, there seems to be no relevant software/utils on the pda and the manual is written in poor English with little technical detail. Great....

OK, so my predecessor placed a Wireless AP somewhere in an outer building in our school. The connection has become intermittent and we need to replace...but can we find it? Nope Does anyone have any method/software/workarounds to physically locate this phantom AP. Thanks Nick

After a long look at this problem, I found the solution. Problem On some machines, SIMS.net display two square boxes on report previews and on export it drops the AddressBlock data into separate cells in Excel. Cause The workstation is missing certain Unicode fonts, required to translate the carriage return character into something it actually understands. When it doesn't, it shows a little square box. Newly set up machines with XP appear not to have this checked by default. Solution Go to Control Panel >> Regional and Language Options >> Languages tab. Ensure the bottom two check boxes under the "Supplemental language support" are checked. Although this install additional support for Thai and East Asian characters, it installs the right font for correct Unicode translation.

Yep, Office Pro 2003 Same build , following Capita's only remaining advice, I uninstalled Office on a known-bad machine and re-booted. No change in the problem. Copied all fonts from the good machine to the bad problem. No change in the problem.. Can't work out what it going on unless HP have stuck something on these machines which is causing this display of carriage return characters.. hopefullly capita might look into it more..

I'm leaning towards it not being a SIMs issue now....logging on to the known good machine with other users accounts doesn't bring up the problem. Logging onto the known-bad machines with the good-machines' regular user account has the problem...Confused? I am...It seems to be machine specific, which I could understand if these weren't brand new machines!!!

Well we had just recovered from a server failure and had installed March sims as fresh, so I guess that narrows it down!! Find and Replace in Excel works a treat so I'll guess I just write a macro for the admin staff to use. Thanks for your help.
