Well basically im having trouble accessing windows shares, open office doesnt seem to opne files from them, if i copy the file to the local system they are fine. Are there any network monitoring tools that i can plugin to the servers? something to manage active directory etc? Cheers

Hi all, Ok its 5th time lucky with my attempt to get on with linux. I've tried suse and various versions of ubuntu. I recently found ubuntu studio, installed it on a virtual machine and found it to be quicker and nicer looking than the regular ubuntu. So i took the plunge and wiped my laptop and dual booted it with XP, that was yesterday and i've not even booted into windows yet......im loving ubuntu. So my question is what are good apps to have? I've installed OpenOffice and TS client and Virtualbox to install a windows box to access sims etc Any other tips? Mike

depends what language you want the app to be written in. You say your using IIS so im assuming your ASP rather than PHP for your intranet? If you are using ASP then take a look down this list ASP Blog Scripts and Components :: Hot Scripts If your using PHP then something like wordpress would be a good option. There is an AD plugin which allows you to create accounts for users based on AD WordPress › Active Directory Authentication WordPress Plugins I've not actually tried this, google is your friend......sometimes!

ok well we have an IP range of 192.168.16-19 the DHCP scope is the 17-19 range. I think i need to think about this more logically. I can set a range of IP addresses to be allowed through the firewall but im not quite sure how to just give out these IPs through the AP only? If im understanding you correct? sorry its been a long day already. Mike

evening/morning akk, i was thinking about jobs i hadnt done and remembered i have a new wireless AP (Netgear i assume) and it was suppose to be installed in the conference room. It never was so im going to look at doing it tomorrow. My question is i'd like to be able use it so guests with wireless devices can use our internet. is there a way to auto configure the browsers and authenticate them so they can access the internet without having to come downa nd put in one of our passwords? Much like the systems you get in hotels just without the extra layer of security. I recently figured out how to allow anonymous authentication through our fireall from certain IPs, maybe this could be linked in somehow? Cheers

agh ok so its the server doing this and not the clients? Im not sure, i've not come across it. I know that a new version has just been released 0.18 so it maybe a bug, your best posting on their fourm and microleak will respond pretty quickly with an answer. Have you changed the servers IP since installation? I know i had to; to get the installation to work through my firewall i had to give it an external IP and then switch it back. First you need to make sure you DHCP server is pointing at the fedora box for PXE requests. If you use Windows 2003 DHCP server do the following: Open DHCP, navigate to Server>Scope Options You then need to add 2 entries in the options. Numbers 66 & 67. Number 66 needs to be the IP of the linux box and the other needs to be "pxelinux.0" without the quotes. this should then boot the linux image when using network boot.

I Couldnt get that NTLM program to work so i gave up. Heres what i did to allow anonymous access out via ISA Server for just certain IPs (IE A Linux machine) Open ISA Management console (Im using ISA Server 2004) expand Configuration>Networks>NEtworks tab Double click your internet network from the list and then click the web proxy tab. Untick require all users to athenticate. Then create a new access policy with the following settings: Action: Allow Protocols: All From: New computer set containing IPs of linux machine TO: External Users: All users Schedule always (or your preference) content types: All Then if i remeber correctly you have to set the proxy settings on the linux machine and in the browser for internet to work. This basically allows any user from that IP address to use the internet without authenticating. works for me here with linux and Iphones and nokia phones etc If your other rules are setup to allow access from certain users groups then these will be authenticated based on the rule settings. hope this helps

Could it be something like proxy settings in your browser? If its setup for your school then it will be trying to use your schools proxy address.

I think i may have a solution for you which i will post tonight or tomorrow. Its probably due to your server having authentication turned which can be troublesome especially if its NTML authentication (I couldnt get linux out through the firewall with it on) I was messing about trying to get my ipod and one of the teachers iphones onto the internet and i managed to get it working. I will post the details soon as im leaving for the day now.

Ours has just started to do this but only on wireless stations for some reason. Can you tell me how you fixed it? cheers Mike

Hi all, So i come across an issue that i cant seem to find anything about on google. Basically we cant print a webpage with frames out onto 1 page, they come out each on their own sheet of paper. The options for "print as laid out on screen" are greyed out, even for me as a domain admin. Anyone know where in group policy this may be? Sounds like it might be a default domain policy set somewhere but i cant see for looking. Cheers

We're on that list too but we are predicted to beat the 30% barrier this year. And we are also 1 of the first schools in Hull to become an academy anyway lol I see this as a way to get rid of the failing teachers so they dont have the hassles/same issues in the new academys. I never understood why they thought a new building with the same kids, same teachers would solve the failing results! madness!

im on Orange but i've already cancelled it as im fed up with them, never offer me anything in the 3 years i've been with them. everyone else i know get upgrades well before their time, i only get them about a month before im due to leave. plus they dont do many decent 12 month contracts

Hi all, Its that time of year again where i need a new phone contract. Im after something as cheap as possible a month and lots if not unlimited texts. Skype would be an advantage but not necessary. Any ideas? I like the 3 texter £25 plan but i would like a better phone. Mike
