I’m not working today but had a phone call from the office this morning saying there was a problem with Parentmail not syncing. Working remotely I see the sims server has the date of last sync showing never and when I try to force a sync it doesn’t work and the date last synced still says never. It was working before the holidays and we start back next week. Looking in the report exporter logs I see the latest file has errors that say ‘file type zip are not allowed’ when the exporter tries to upload. Any ideas? Parentmail support isn’t much help. The case has been passed to second line but not time frame of when they will start looking. We are going away for the weekend and was planning to leave at 11am so as you can imagine the wife is not happy!

It’s the usual story of being the youngest child so he gets the box room while his older sister gets the larger room with space for a fair sized desk. I’m in discussions with mrs jobos to make space in the dining room for a proper desktop pc. We bought the house before the kids came along and it was plenty big enough for the two of us but now things are getting tight.

Yes that is true when comparing it against an iPhone.

Wow , laptop prices are still high then. Thanks for that.

My son is trying to play Fortnite on an old 3rd gen laptop and as you can imagine it runs pretty poor so I’m looking for recommendations for a better laptop for him. It needs to be a laptop owning to lack of space but I don’t have a budget in mind so a used laptop would be fine. Battery wise it really doesn’t matter as it would be connected to the charger when in use. Any ideas?

Sophos XG Safeguarding reports

I would be interested if FastVue also. Has anyone got a ballpark figure what it might cost? -
Thanks everyone. The iDRAC on this server is running 2.75.100.75 so it was a little different for me but the iDRAC update settings can be found at iDRAC Settings > Update and Rollback and there's a number of updates available, SAS firmware, lifecycle controller firmware, BIOS, network firmware and the Dell OS driver pack so perhaps best to wait until August and then I'll do one update at a time just to be safe.

I should have written Dell and not HP! I've found the Software Update Utility on the Dell site, thanks for pointing it out.

A couple of years ago I installed server 2019 on a Dell PowerEdge R630 plus installed the service pack I downloaded from HP. Now with all the talk of schools getting hacked it's making me think that in the future if I need to reinstall the server would I need to install the service pack again? I'm only asking as I seem to have misplaced it and I couldn't see it on the Dell service site either. Anyone know where I can find it or better still a more recent service pack that would work?

KCSIE 2023 - updates that may impact IT
Jobos replied to Ditto's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Lots of good points in this thread and will keep the network managers busy but what about schools who only have a technician like primaries, who will read, digest and implement the required changes? I'm a technician so fall into the latter category and I bet more will be asked of me. -
Thanks. That makes sense and I don't mind doing that if it helps later on. July updates are next week so I'll be able to test then.

Today I started testing Win11 so fired-up a test vm and deployed using MDT. All went well and when it was almost done I looked at WSUS to see what updates it needed and approved the 2023-05 cumulative update for windows 11 KB5026372. When I looked at the file size of the update I nearly fell of my chair, 9.4GB just for the monthly update! Is that correct and how the hell am I supposed to push that out to laptops when they are using wifi?

While Googling what a jump box was I came across this that is a good read and not too dry at all. https://www.csoonline.com/article/2612700/security-jump-boxes-improve-security-if-you-set-them-up-right.html

I was under the impression that to use conditional access a P1 licence was needed which the school does not have.

All teachers here have the C50 and we've started getting loss of batteries too. We paid extra for the 3 year warranty but batteries are not covered. Maybe they knew something we didn't!

I've been getting emails from MS 365 message centre telling me about the new way to login to 365 that's coming next month and from what I gather it uses the Outlook app on the users phone as an authenticator. I use SMS authentication on my standard school email and the 365 admin account and it works fine but none of the other staff use MFA. This looks like MFA will be enabled by default but they can disable it if they want. Does anyone know what would happen if a user doesn't have Outlook on there phone, i.e. would it just continue without any MFA prompts? I'm about the only one who doesn't have the app as I didn't like getting work emails when not working but I expect some staff to disable MFA as strictly speaking staff are not allowed personal phones in the classroom. Video of it here https://janbakker.tech/authenticator-lite-approve-azure-mfa-prompts-with-the-outlook-app

Thanks everyone. We're not licenced for anymore servers but I think I'll install WAC on the WSUS server as that doesn't do a lot for most of the month.
-
I'm looking at installing WAC but not sure the best way forward. Do I install on my Win10 machine (always used as standard user) or do I install on each server? Thanks in advance.

How do you workout which computers are no longer needed in AD
Jobos replied to TwistedHelixis's topic in Enterprise Software
I've use OldCmp in the past and it worked well producing a html list of computers. OldCmp -
I like the sound of that! Which model would you recommend 3rd gen or the new 4K? Here is the inside of the screen showing the access door with Push Share and the CMS player.
-
No heard of this before but I'll look into it further. This looks good but the downside is the Apple TV remote will not work as it will be inside the screen housing. At the back of the screen there is a lockable panel that you can fit computers and such like. I'll post a picture shortly.

As said in another thread the school bought an outdoor screen without consulting me and of course it doesn't do what they wanted so I've been asked if I could take a look. The screen is 65" and made by Allsee https://www.allsee-tech.com/digital-signage-products/outdoor-waterproof-ip-rated-wall-mounted-digital-signage-advertising-displays.html It looks great if you like massive iPhones but they bought it with the intention of screen mirroring the teachers iPads to display PE lessons while outside as the school has subscribed to Jasmine Real PE, an online platform that has PE videos. The classrooms are using Promethean screens and screen mirroring linked to iPads works fine with them. Suppose they thought all screens worked the same! If the iPad didn't need internet access to show videos from Jasmine Real PE the screen would work fine as the screen comes Push Share to connect iPads and PCs but when using Push Share the iPad connects to Push Share's own wifi thereby disconnecting from the internet. The screen also comes with a CMS player to show advertising as basically the screen is made for advertising. If only they asked the right questions before buying it! I was thinking of adding an Android box to the screen in the hope screen mirroring works with that but Android is not my thing so don't know if that's possible?

I’m trying to install Fortnite on my son’s laptop and it’s taking forever. I started it at 9pm last night and by 11pm it had only done 58% so left it running, by 7:30 this morning it had finished so clicking next a few times it started checking for updates and it’s been checking for updates for nearly 7 hours! How long does it take? Task manager shows it using 20% cpu and time of writing it’s not using any network. I’m hesitant to restart it in case it makes it worse. It just says checking for updates with a spinning wheel. Thanks in advance.
